2015 Starbird National Rod & Custom Hall Of Fame Pt. 1

A couple of years back I saw that Darryl Starbird was having the National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame induction on Friday night of the Tulsa car show and I knew that I had to attend. I took a half day off from work to get down to Tulsa in time for the ceremony with no real idea of what to expect. What I experienced was one of the koolest evenings of my life. Here I was in a room with some of the legends of the car world in a small crowd in a small banquet room.

So this year when I saw the event was going to happen at the National Rod & Custom Museum near Starbird’s home I decided to attend. The Hall of Fame festivities have been going on for 20 years, most of them right there at the museum. When the event has been at the Museum there’s been a car show attached to it, most of the time down along the shore of Grand Lake at the back of Starbird’s property. This year that would not be the case as that area was about 6ft under water.

This year I took off another half day on a Friday and drove myself to Oklahoma. Along the way I stopped at Fast AL’s Upholstery in Dewey, OK to check on the progress of the 57 Ford that Jeff Myers has been building. As much fun as I had there and as amazing as the car was looking I had to get on over to Starbird’s. The Friday night activities planned were for the inductees and guests to enjoy some BBQ in the back yard next to Starbird’s home. I was expecting some passable food and great company, both of those expectations were exceeded.

After an amazing plate of BBQ and some small talk with some industry legends I had to call it a night. A little over an hour drive took me to my buddy Ryno’s place where the couch was made up for me to crash on. The next morning I did a photo shoot on a great little T hot rod and then went over to Springfield, MO for the Queen City Riot (coverage here and here). After that it was 2 hours back to Grand Lake for an afternoon at the car show, a surprise wedding in the museum and then the induction ceremony. Here are some photos from the car show.
