My 2nd trip to Dubuque, IA for the Retro Rewind went down over the weekend of Jan. 9, 2016. The 3rd annual Retro Rewind was a lot of fun, even if I decided last minute to not bring my ride. The bitter cold may have kept my car (I wimped out after being sick all week) and some spectators away but there were still a ton of great cars, trucks, bikes, vendors, bands and awesome car people at the show.

Feature : Ryno Built 1961 Ford Unibody

We’ve all seen it, we’ve all done it. NO not that, I’m talking about people who buy a vehicle with one plan in mind and then it turns into something else. That’s exactly what happened to the simple shop truck build by Ryno Built of SW Missouri.

2014 Shoebox Central Open House

After hanging out at the Hot Rod Garage Open House in the morning and about an hour and 45 minute drive I arrived at Shoebox Central for their open house. I met a few cars leaving the event but even with them, the parking lot doesn’t hold too many and it was pretty full.

1949 Ford : Roy Fields’ Custom Shoebox Feature

“You’re going to want to replace that flathead.” That’s the first words of many people when we talk about my 51 Ford. They tell me how they would be good for tooling around town or this or that but for the amount that I drive I’m going to want to replace it with something more powerful and modern. My counter argument is Roy Fields’ 1949 Ford. Not only has this car been all over the country including taking Fields to Bonneville to run he and his brother’s LSR car. Tales of that drive include extended high speed runs proving the motor’s longevity.

Feature Friday: Rick’s Home Grown Model A

A long time tri-five fan, Rick Salyer enjoyed driving his gorgeous black 1957 Chevy to some shows with his fellow Tulsa, Ok area friend Robert Roggendorff. In a “it’s a small world” twist Roggendorff was a high school buddy with my Dad and his older brother Tom, and after a surprise party reunited Roggendorff with the Scanlans we started going to shows together. The KKOA Leadsled Spectacular, the H.A.M.B. Drags and the Greaserama were all shows that we’ve attended as a big group for a few years.

2014 Winfield Garage Show Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2

One of the many great folks that I’ve met along all of these adventures is my buddy Doug. Doug sells shirts at many shows across the midwest, we run into each other quite a bit. He has a show in Winfield, KS called the Winfield Garage Show. For the 2nd year I took my Galaxie to the show, it’s a small show but lots of good people. Hopefully the show can grow a bit in the next few years, Doug does a great job of putting on a show.

On day 48 of a 48 Day road trip, Floyd & Becki Dutton’s 1958 Edsel Roundup Wagon. I shot this mild custom for a magazine article, keep your eyes open to see it in print!

Feature Friday: Jerry & Cynthia Curry’s 1936 Ford Pickup

The list of reasons that a particular project gets delayed can be a long one. “Life gets in the way” is how most of that list is summed up. It’s fairly rare to see “our house and garage burned down” on the list, but that’s exactly what happened to Jerry & Cynthia Curry shortly after Jerry brought home a 1936 Ford pickup.

Feature Friday: Built, Not Bought 1926 RPU

The phrase “Built, Not Bought” gets ballied about quite a bit these days. Not all of us feel up to the task of building our rides, yet. So when you see a guy at a show that isn’t advertising that it’s “Built, Not Bought” you find yourself assuming that maybe it was bought or at least paid for and shop built. Not the case with this 1926 Ford RPU.

A Lazy Saturday With Some Friends

With no major plans on my schedule for last weekend, I was excited when my buddy Jack said that he was having a small intimate get together at his place in honor of some family that were going to be in town for the Easter Weekend. This was not to be a big deal, just a few of his Mulvane Marauders friends and some family and me.

So… I loaded up my cameras and headed for Wichita. 1st stop was at Deville’s Barbershop in downtown Wichita. After a quick trim I was on my way to Jack’s place.

Guest Post: Cory McMahon At The LSRU!

As if I didn’t post enough on the Lonestar Roundup last week… But Cory’s pics are just too cool to not share them with you! Cory took a fixed 35mm lens with a super low aperture which gave him the opportunity to get some fantastic photos from the weekend. While I was there to cover the show for you, Cory was there to just take some great photos, and he has done just that! Find Cory on Facebook here or on Instagram here.

Without any further ado, here are Cory’s awesome pics from the event. They are a reminder to me that I need to keep pushing my boundaries and pull my fixed lens back out of the bag every once in awhile! I’m experimenting with a new style of showing off photos here, CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO SEE IT FULL SIZE! If you are seeing this in your email go here to see the full post!

2014 NSRA Southwestern Nationals Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 Part 4

It’d been 4 years since I’d been to the NSRA Southwestern Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK. To be 100% honest billet wheeled street rods are not my thing. Some can look great for sure but a set of wheels that cost half what I paid for my car is just something I can’t really relate to at this point in my financial life :). Anyways, the show was big, lots of rides, lots of spectators and lots of wind. The vendor building was usually empty for the amount of spectators, I don’t think that the average spectator had any idea that there were vendors in the building. This is the kind of show that a lot of folks leave their hoods open so they can get judged to get a trophy. As such they leave the cars open like that and look like crap in photos 🙂 Oh well. Folks when your hood is open your car looks like it’s broken down, want a trophy? Go to a trophy store :).

On with the photos!

1 Month Warning: Lonestar Roundup!

Okay so I’ve shared a metric crap-ton (technical measurement) of photos of the Lonestar Roundup over the years here, on my Facebook, my Instagram, my Twitter, my Tumblr and any other social media site that I can log into. This year the show goes down on April 4-5 at the Travis County Fairgrounds on the Northeast side of Austin.

For the 2nd time I’ll be driving my Galaxie on the 1200 mile round trip to the show. The plan is to meet up with a big caravan of kool in Dallas on the Thursday morning and roll down together from there.

Here are some of what I saw last year.

Car Feature: Kevin’s 1964 Galaxie 500

The very first time that I remember seeing a Galaxie was before my classic car obsession started. At that time I was just in a cars in general mode with an emphasis on car stereos. So while attending a show in Omaha, NE I saw a car that was completely alien to me, I mean it really looked like a UFO to my ignorant eyes, but I loved it. That car was a 1963 Galaxie 500 Sports Roof (1963 1/2 Galaxie 500) and it ignited a love affair that burns through to today.

Tech: Ryno Built Saves My Ride

I’ve known for awhile that the transmission cross-member that was in my 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 was hanging too low. It was dragging too much and on big bumps on the highway it would slam the pavement, no bueno. So when I was talking to my buddy Ryno at Ryno Built about it he said to come down to his shop in the Joplin area and he’d get a new one fabbed up.

When we got the car up on the lift it was obvious that things were more dire than I thought. The existing cross-member had completely broken into two pieces. One more big bump could have lost it completely, that could lead to any manner of catastrophic consequences. I’ve seen driveshafts come out and nearly slam into the car I was in behind the drive shaft’s prior vehicle. A couple of inches difference and that drive shaft would have come through the windshield. I cannot imagine if my car broke and caused something like that to happen. Best case scenario the failure would leave me stranded on the side of the road, worst case scenario could be deadly. Just another note to encourage you to make sure your ride is mechanically sound not just for your safety but for the safety of those around you.

 Here
Here’s what we found when we got the car up on the lift. one side of the transmission cross-member had completely broken. 10 ga. welded to ½” plate and 0 penetration on the welds. That’s not rust on the floor pan that’s trans fluid. Another issue I have to fix.

Lucky for me I didn’t take one more trip with the car the way it was. 1 side of the existing transmission cross-member was completely separated.

Royboy Feature Video Episode 3: RynoBuilt’s 1961 Ford Unibody

Finally Episode 3 is ready! Changing up the format a bit for this one, I stripped away the intro and just left the feature. Way back in 2012 I shot this video at RynoBuilt’s shop in SW Missouri. Since then the truck was finished, we shot it for a magazine and it was featured as the February 2014 cover on Classic Trucks Magazine (order a copy here).

If you can’t see the video below click here.

Thanks Ryno for letting me shoot the truck for the magazine and for this video! Everyone go follow Ryno on Facebook to keep up to date on what he’s working on.

Car Feature: Austin’s 32 Roadster

Often when you find a great looking ride on the streets or at a car show, you find that the owner is typically a bit older and has had decades worth of rides to practice on before getting to this great one. It’s rare to find a young owner with a great car, and to find one that’s 22 and built it himself almost never happens. So when I first saw Austin Grabowski roll into the Starliner car show at Wichita’s Kansas Aviation Museum, I admit it, I assumed it was a car that had been passed down to him. That first impression was dead wrong.

Shop Visit: Chaotic Customs

Between Christmas and New Year’s I was on a road trip and had a little time to stop by and see my friends at Chaotic Customs in Mulvane, KS. They’ve done some work on one of my cars and a couple for my dad and I wanted to drop off some Christmas candy from my family to the Chaotic crew.
Here are some cell phone photos from that visit.

The crew at Chaotic is really doing a kool job on this Stingray Vette. Adding a bit of muscle to the front fenders, sucking the bumpers into the body a bit for a more streamlined look, re-shaping the wheel wells again to show a bit of a bulge on the body. Almost like the way the designers may have envisioned the car before the bean counters took over. I can’t wait to see this one all finished up.

Thanks to my friends at Chaotic for opening up the doors to my dad and I and taking the time to show us all of the projects in the shop. I’m sure the big tray of candy had nothing to do with that :). I have upcoming shop visits planned for 3 new shops in the next few months, stay up to date by subscribing in the top right hand corner of the page.

Car Feature: Beginner’s Luck? Brandon’s 31 Model A

Sometimes you have to practice for years to get good at something, other times you get it right on your first effort. Brandon McCullough from Tulsa, OK got this 1931 Model A right on his first effort. As a kid he attended “every car show that we could find” with his dad who was always talking about wanting a hot rod coupe. After a few well detailed beautiful bike builds McCullough decided it was time to build a coupe for himself just like Dad had always wanted.

This post features a bunch of rides that were on display in the Hot Rod Hill Climb area as well as the Deluxe Speed Shop display. Some of my favorites of the show.

If you just have to have some of this kool stuff (and you know you do) go to Hot Rod Hill Climb and they will hook you up!

New rb Embroidered hats are now in stock! Order yours today for a great Christmas gift 🙂

That’s it for my whirlwind trip up to Denver and back on Black Friday. After that last pic I hopped in my daily driver and high tailed it east for 422 miles, had some drinks with friends and family and called it a day. I hope you enjoyed the coverage of the show! More fresh content for you tomorrow morning at 9am Central!

See you at a show,
