The very first time that I remember seeing a Galaxie was before my classic car obsession started. At that time I was just in a cars in general mode with an emphasis on car stereos. So while attending a show in Omaha, NE I saw a car that was completely alien to me, I mean it really looked like a UFO to my ignorant eyes, but I loved it. That car was a 1963 Galaxie 500 Sports Roof (1963 1/2 Galaxie 500) and it ignited a love affair that burns through to today.
The 1964 Galaxie and 1963 1/2 are pretty similar in profile, while they have different sheet metal all around, the roofline stays the same, as well as much of what’s underneath. So when I saw this 64 Galaxie a few years ago at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular I was immediately drawn to it.
When I first saw the car it belonged to a guy named Duncan who had owned the car throughout the build. Al Gaither was responsible for the rust repair and kustom metal fab on the nosing, decking, shaved handles & emblems along with the 60’s Falcon hood scoop addition, while Hooligan’s Hot Rod’s Ron Pinkston did the bodywork and laid down the two tone paint. The blue hue is a Dupont Chromabase Ford Sonic Blue while the purple is a House of Kolor product.

Mechanically this Galaxie is pretty much running factory gear that’s been upgraded along the way. A rebuilt 289 was prepared by Wichita’s United Engine Supply with an Edelbrock 4 bbl carb, stock headers & glasspacks which are tucked up and away to keep the ride low. The trans is a rebuilt factory Cruise-o-matic with a Lokar Tall Shifter on the floor.
Stance on the car is handled by lowering springs in the front and blocks in the back, while the factory drums remain all around they are pumped up with a dual stage master cylinder. The chrome wheels that I first saw on the car have now been replaced with some NOS Mickey Thompson chrome slots, 14’s in the front and 15’s in the back with the era appropriate narrow white walls.
Inside the car sports a full kustom interior from the tuck & roll dash cover to the same treatment on the rear package tray. The seats are white with blue tuck & roll inserts, and the metal flaked steering wheel matches. The factory gauges have been replaced with a new kit that mounts up some new Autometer gauges to keep track of all of the vitals.
The car now belongs to my buddy Kevin and I believe he is currently listing it for sale. Use the Contact form to get ahold of me and I can lead you in the right direction if you’re interested in putting this ride in your garage.
See you at a show,
Royboy
