2015 Yellow Brick Road Car Show Pt. 1 Coverage Brought To You By Stray Kat Kustoms

I told myself that in 2015 I would do my best to hit shows that I’ve never attended before. The 2015 Yellow Brick Road Car Show was one of the shows that was recommended to me. 2014 saw the show with about 400 rides from western Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, sounded like the perfect opportunity to see new-to-me cars, meet new people and hopefully introduce new people to royboyproductions.com.

As you can see from the photo above, Mother Nature had other plans. The strong storms that the Midwest had been seeing for a few days were forecasted to show up again on Saturday all across Kansas, including Liberal in the southwest corner. Late Friday afternoon I looked at the forecast and decided that it looked like I could have a clear morning in Liberal or a rainy one in KC. So I packed up after work and drove 4 hours out to Liberal, KS and got a room.

Part 1 | Part 2

Saturday morning I woke up to bad news. Not only had my plan backfired, it was dreary, misting and a storm was moving into the panhandle of Oklahoma, but KC looked to be clear and beautiful. Dang. So I got out of the hotel, and found my way to Light Park. I quickly found my friends in the Affordable Street Rods booth and hung out under their awning as the rain came down harder and harder. We talked and just hung out for about 2 hours, I decided to run back to my car and grab a pair of ponchos, one for me and one for the camera. I’d ordered these for the forecasted awful Lonestar Roundup weekend and now I got the chance to use them. I’d really rather they were still both in their packages in my car, but it is what it is.

This gentleman drove out from the Phoenix area in this fine example of a 32 Ford.

This was as close as I could get to the small amount of cars that were in attendance during the downpour until I got the poncho on.

I learned the hard way that using the camera poncho and using the back screen of the camera instead of putting it to my eye left something to be desired in my framing. The plastic bag covered up part of the screen and I didn’t realize I wasn’t centered. A couple of shots later I seem to have figured it out. Notice the rain coming down in the shots, it was kind of fun to shoot under these conditions, I was already soaked so it wasn’t like I was going to get any more soaked.

At this point in the morning I called it quits. I hopped in the car and turned on the heat on high, the poncho kept me dry from the knees up but from the knees down, I might as well have walked in 2ft of water. So I sat in the car and edited the photos on my laptop while I tried to dry my feet out a bit. A quick look at the sky showed that the edge of the storm was finally hitting Liberal. As it moved over towards the north east a strong wind around 40 mph came back the opposite direction. Pop up tents were lost, the car was rocking, I started to look for funnel clouds.

90 minutes later the rain stopped, the photo above was the scene as I got out of the car.

It didn’t take long for a handful of cars to show up, locals and folks at the hotels, there were a few cars to add to the die hard folks that waited out the 3 and a half hours of rain in the park.

One of my favorites of the show. Loved this 36 Ford!
