2016 has been a great year! This year I traveled over 27,000 miles by car and a couple thousand more by plane attending events from the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, CA to the Detroit Autorama in Detroit, MI and a whole pile of places in between. I’ve shot 39 events and a bunch of shoots for magazines or private clients, amassing more than 15,000 images along the way. So far this year there have been more thanĀ 10,340,884 photo views not counting any social media. It’s been a heck of a ride and it’s just been preparing me for the next adventure. Enjoy some of my favorite images from the year so far. Don’t forget if you like an image you can get a copy in any size you’d like by clicking on the photo.

2016 Artist At Large Kustom Kulture Xmas Party

2016; Artist; Large; Kustom; Kulture; Christmas; Party; 026

For the 2nd year in a row, Dennis McPhail and his crew at Artist At Large World Headquarters threw down the Kustom Kulture Xmas Party on Dec. 4th in Wichita, KS at Artist At Large.

Artists from across the country came to town for the art show that filled the entire building this year. Companies such as mine and all the way up to companies like Vintage Air gave items to be given away as door prizes throughout the day. All you had to do is show up to get most of the door prizes but some you had to buy a piece of art to get an entry.

It was a great showing of amazing artists and I hated leaving, I was able to grab a couple of prints from Timm McKenny before I left, now I have eleventy billion pieces of art in the house to get matted and framed. I still want more.

2016 Decembrrrr Run!

Here’s most of the starting lineup!

6 years ago I decided that I needed to organize a fun run. When would I do it? The schedule was full already through most of the year. I decided to do the run in December and Mickey from Stray Kat Kustoms suggested Decembrrrr Run as the name. That first year lived up to the brrrr part as it was about 13 degrees with a cold wind.

This year we gathered up in Gypsum, KS and drove to Wichita, KS. We stopped at Devlin Rod & Custom and Soft Strip along with a lunch stop. It was a blast! Here are some photos of the day!

48 Cars In 48 States : Pre-Trip #001 Irene The Camper

A few months ago I announced to the world that I was going to do something big and awesome in 2017. The plan is simple, I’m going to hop in the Galaxie, with the canned ham camper on the back and I’m going to hit all lower 48 states in one monster road trip of a life time.

This weekend I finally got to tear in to the camper to fix some of the rotted wood. Most old campers have some rotted wood, this one had more than I bargained for…

2016 Hobo Happenings Pt. 3

2016; Hobo; Happenings; 078

I want more small town shows to be like this one. I don’t even know what it is that makes me like it so much. I’ve been to lots of small town shows that just had nothing special about them. This one though, maybe it’s the people, maybe it’s the friends, maybe it’s something special about the town, whatever it is this is one of the shows that I hope everyone can experience. I had a great time at the Hobo Happenings.

2016 Hobo Happenings Pt. 2

2016; Hobo; Happenings; 036

As I rolled into Douglass, KS for the Hobo Happenings show I could tell this was going to be a good year. The show had more Ā cars than I’ve ever seen there before. My friends of the Primarys club in Wichita saved me a spot so that I could park next to them. This is one of those shows that’s about good people. The small town of Douglass was bursting at the seams with kool. There are bigger shows with more people but this one has some great folks. Walking around talking to folks, shooting photos, wishing the show season wasn’t over.

More to come tomorrow.

2016 Hobo Happenings Pt. 1

2016; Hobo; Happenings; 004

The typical last show of the year in this region is the Hobo Happenings in Douglass, KS. I forget when I first attended, but this was the first year that I took a car that I can remember. It was cold… I mean really cold for the 23 degree temperature. The stack of Steele Rubber weather stripping on my shop bench didn’t do me any good while I drove the car. The Galaxie’s heater was on high and just enough to overcome the drafty car. Another item for this winter’s to do list.

Enjoy the photos, more of the story of the trip and more photos tomorrow.

2016 Pistons & Paint Coverage Part 5

2016; Pistons; And; Paint; 184

Have you noticed the amount of wagons? Wow, the show had some great wagons, and a bunch of great 1958 cars in general. Parked next to me was the newest build from David Guymon, a 1958 Ford wagon he’s just finished for Lars Hellgren. The car has a McCullough super charged Y block and a chop top. It’s really cool and I will be shooting it for a magazine feature soon. I hope you enjoyed the show coverage and make sure to get Pistons & Paint on your schedule for next year.

2016 Pistons & Paint Coverage Part 4

2016; Pistons; And; Paint; 139

Pistons & Paint has been going on for 15 years, in the 4 years that I’ve attended I’ve seen it just keep getting better. Since I sometimes vend at shows I pay attention to how the vendors are set up. This year there seemed to be more vendors and they were lined up along one side of the venue. There were some great vendors this year, you could buy photos of your car as you Ā rolled in from two separate companies, you could get your car striped, buy the latest Hop Up Magazine which features an article that I shot, tons of great options.

More of the story tomorrow.

2016 Pistons & Paint Coverage Part 3

2016; Pistons; And; Paint; 091

Throughout the day the cars kept rolling in. Even after attending the show since 2012 I was impressed with the increasing quality of the cars. Almost every car show that I go to has a few cars that I just can’t stomach. Pistons & Paint had a very low number of cars that I just walked by. Tons of great quality rides filling the fairgrounds.

2016 Pistons & Paint Coverage Part 2

Around 8am I rolled into the North Texas Fairgrounds, the show was not as full as I’d expected at that time. Over the next 4 hours the cars just kept rolling in. The total car count was approaching 500, but I didn’t get a final number. The fairgrounds is essentially a large grass parking lot and it was nearly full. Pistons & Paint has great cars, tons of great people and great music. That’s an area that many shows fail on, they have the same tired 50’s pop music all day long, not here. The live tunes started at 11:30 with Dylan Bishop, then The Stratoliners, and finally The Paladins! Great day of music!

2016 Pistons & Paint Coverage Part 1

2016; Pistons; And; Paint; 034

Since 2013 I’ve been making an additional trek south across the Red River to North Texas for Pistons & Paint. This year for the 15th Annual show held at the North Texas Fairgrounds in Denton, TX I was able to take my Galaxie for the 2nd time. The journey started Friday evening with a drive after work. By midnight I’d reached a hotel in southern OK, a few hours sleep then it was time to head on down to Denton. In the last couple of years the show had dealt with a little cold, a little rain, nearby rain, but this year it was dang near perfect.

Looking Back at the Hot Rod Revolution

3843

Last week I ended up going through some old photos and seeing some photos from the 2011 Hot Rod Revolution in Austin, TX. The Hot Rod Revolution had been held in California and then moved to Austin in 2010. The 2010 version of the show was the first that I attended. I left home at 6:15pm and laid my head down in my hotel room in Austin at 3:45am. A few hours later I was at one of the coolest shows that I’ve ever attended. The location was the Seaholm Power Plant in downtown, I think you’ll see from the photos that it was pretty cool.

So Saturday was a busy day, it started at Ryno Built Rod & Custom with a shoot of a Metro Van that he has been working on. The photo above is of the gauge cluster in the Metro. The cluster is from Haneline Rod & Custom Products in Fort Scott, KS. So after shooting the van Ryno and I headed north on the way to Pleasant Hill, MO to attend the Gears and Gals Open House and we made some stops along the way. One of those stops was to the home of Haneline.

2016 SEMA Photos by John Wells

I still haven’t made it to SEMA yet. For those that don’t know, SEMA is the Specialty EquipmentĀ Market Association and once a year they have a huge industry only event in Vegas. This isn’t a car show, this isn’t for the general public, it’s a huge event Ā where most of the industry shows off their equipment, their skills and they do a lot of networking and being Vegas probably a lot of drinking too. John Wells of Retro Rewind Dubuque was kind enough to share some images with me to share with you. This is a huge event and nearly impossible for anyone to cover completely, these photos represent a nice cross section of the event.

This post is brought to you by the 2017 Retro Rewind Dubuque on Jan. 7, 2017 at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, IA
