After my trip to the Texas Thaw I took a nice leisurely drive about 4 hours north west to Wellington, TX to visit my buddy Flat Top Bob (Bob Owens) at Owens Salvage at 3725 US HWY 83 – Wellington, TX – 79095. Bob and I have been buddies for a couple of years and Jeff Norwell has been on me for at least that long to go visit Bob. Finally I got the chance to make that happen!
48 Cars In 48 States : The Great American Road Trip – A 48 state road trip with a stop in each state to photograph a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or drag vehicle. Daily updates will be posted here on royboyproductions.com so you can see where I’ve gone, who I’ve met, some of what I’ve seen. At the end of the trip I’ll produce a 200 page full color book of the entire adventure. Business Sponsorship Packages here available as well as you can pre-order the book here!
Bob’s father started the salvage yard 2 years before Bob was born, so he’s been in it his whole life. There are a couple of cars in the yard that have been there since he was born, some parts are missing since then but there’s a ton of great stuff left. Some cars have given most of their parts to bring 7-10 others back to the road, that’s part of what they do at a salvage yard. Yes, you can find a good car to start a project, but most likely you’re going to get a part here or there, as well as a dozen other people are going to get a part here or there and eventually there’s not much left of the car in the yard. But it lives on in all of those other cars that are now going down the highway.
This cool old camper is just waiting for someone to show up and give it a new life!
Man, a 2 door ranch wagon… I want one!
This 1963 Fairlane wagon was made into a trailer by someone at some point.
In addition to all of the vintage awesome cars and trucks, Owens Salvage has a ton of stuff from late model cars. Plus racks and racks of stuff already pulled from vehicles. Flathead engines, nail head engines, all kinds of things in between.
About 10 years ago Bob and his wife Linda sold their home and bought a camper. Then the started on the coolest house ever. It’s a 60×120 metal building, you walk in at the center of one wall and once inside you are in a giant open area. This is a garage area for some cars that Owens has collected over his lifetime, as well as an amazing collection of vintage signs and memorabilia. To one side is a garage door and a walk door that lead to the shop area, to the other side is a french door set that leads to the house. I’ve included some photos inside the building for you just because they are so cool that they’ve really inspired me to change my plans on my future shop/house.
