The H.A.M.B. Drag has been invading Mo-Kan Dragway between Joplin, MO and Pittsburgh, KS for more than a decade and let’s face it, the weather isn’t always conducive to good racing but hey it’s always a good time.

For the 2019 event held on August 17 it was a rainy day. With nearly 5500 miles on my schedule in the next 6 weeks and a forecast of rain, I hopped in my daily driver early Saturday morning and made the 250 mile trek to Mo-Kan. About an hour before hitting the event the rain started, not a lot of it, but enough to make the track unusable. By 11 am when I rolled into the gate at the track I’d ran through the storm and it was just hitting the hallowed grounds. It rained for an hour or so and then the crew at Mo-Kan busted their butts to get the track and the pits cleared as much water as possible so that racing could happen.

We all watched the skies and the radars on our phones and by 3pm it was time to call the cars to the track. Since there was some moisture that just wouldn’t go away the call was made to only run the cars to the 330ft mark, just to get the cars on the track and hopefully having the cars driving over that spot would help dry it out. After about an hour, more sprinkles came in and put a halt to the racing. Another hour later and the cars were called to the lanes again, this time with timing to the 1/8th mile point. Cars lined up and the fun started again.

Two hours later it was time for me to head out, I still had 250 miles of driving to get me home. While I didn’t get to see as much racing as we have in years past, that just means that I got to hang out with friends in the pits for that much extra time. In the end, that’s what I’m in for anyways, racing is a bonus but good times with good people is the good stuff.

  1. Bummer on MO-KAN rain. Julesburg Drags hot and dry. I traveled to Joplin almost once a year for 40 years on business and never knew the dragstrip was there. Wore my new red RB Hat in Ft. Collins the other day and let all the Libs stare me down.
