With last year’s shutdowns and canceled shows it was great to get to hang out at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular again this year! My former home in Gypsum, KS is only about 25 minutes from Oakdale Park in Salina, KS where the show has been held on the last full Sunday of July for the last few years.

It’s only $86.50 shipped anywhere in the USA

I showed up Thursday afternoon and got my car registered, this was the first year that I wasn’t vending at the show in quite a few years. It was odd to be registering the car instead of the booth. With my club brothers and sisters on the way from Colorado I went over the the park to see if there was any room left for us to hang for the weekend. It was filling up fast!

The show has become really popular, tons of non-kustoms everywhere, even on Thursday. Why people bring non-kustoms to a kustom show I’ll never understand. You wouldn’t take a Mustang to a Camaro show would ya?

Thursday night the show starts off with a slow cruise parade down Salina’s Santa Fe Ave, an early chance to show off your car for 1000’s of spectators and for people to see your ride in motion. After the parade Hot Rod Walt performed at the Paramount Bar until about midnight. So on the way out of town I stopped by one of the hotels to see my club as they finally had arrived after a heck of a day. We sat in the parking lot and talked for an hour or two, it was a great night!

Friday we rolled into the show early, the show was filling up fast so I went and got some spots saved for our club cars while they went over to the host hotel to get registered. Before long the park was looking like it normally does on a Saturday and it was only about 11am on Friday.

Friday evening there’s a lot going on in Salina. In addition to the annual Run-What-Ya-Brung drags, and the annual Calvin Customs Shop Party, there’s also the Hall of Fame Ceremony at the host hotel. After we grabbed dinner we headed back to the hotel for more hang out time, calling it quit around 1am for me and later for some of the folks staying at the show.

Saturday was pretty much a repeat of Friday, just hotter! The temperature wasn’t the hottest that it had ever been but it sure felt like it due to a lack of wind. The cars were packed in to the park in a way that I have never seen before. It was kind of difficult to get around, and the temps sent quite a few cars home early. A bunch of our group went over to the water park across the river, they said it was the best $6 that they’d spent in a long time.
