For a few years I’ve heard my friend Jason Smith from Hot Rod Garage in Sand Springs, OK talk about a dream show that he would like to put on. Our mutual friend Brandon McCullough joined in the conversation at some point and a couple of years went by. I’d all but forgotten about their idea when one of them texted me and told me that the show was happening and to keep an eye out for the details.
Finally a date was set, a location was set, it was to be Halloween, 2020 at Woolaroc outside of Bartlesville, OK. The name “The Gathering At the Roc” was coined and they set up an Instagram account and started sharing some photos of cars that were coming to the show. You see, you must submit photos of your car to get accepted to be a part of the show. Some try to get as many cars to their shows as possible, but that’s not the plan for the Gathering. The Gathering is about a hand curated group of amazing cars and their owners.
We all know that 2020 has been a rough year for many reasons. So when the CrossMembers CC asked me if I’d like to come back to OK on Oct. 3rd to cover their OKC Hot Rod Hundred again, I was ready to take a weekend away from the normal duties of life to go play hotrods with some friends.
I rolled out of Wichita at 6am on Saturday and rolled into the starting point of the HRH around 8am, the cars were already filing the parking lot. About 150 had pre-registered and I believe another 70 or so did so that morning.
In this episode Royboy sits out at a campsite with some friends and talks hot rods, Flaming Gorge Resort and whatever else comes to mind. Including members of the Denver Deton8ors, Salt Lake City Trottlers, Salt City Speed Shop and Denver Timing Association.
For the 2nd year in a row I made the nearly 800 mile journey from my home in central Kansas to Dutch John, Utah, more specifically to Flaming Gorge Resort for the 15th Annual Car Show. We showed up on Wednesday this year instead of Thursday, another day in the remote mountain resort meant more time with friends and car family, more time to relax and recharge, and more time to enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds Flaming Gorge Resort .
In this episode Royboy talks with Piero DeLuca of Mad Fabricators Society and Lucky Burton of Lucky’s Hot Rods about their new YouTube show “Stormin’ Bonneville” about the final push to get Lucky’s long term dream build out to the salt.
This episode Royboy talks with John McLeod of Classic Instruments in Boyne City, MI. We talk about the history of Classic Instruments, John’s personal car history and some philosophy on running a successful business.
A few weeks ago I had Roger and Will from the Hot Rod Showdown on my podcast talking about their 2nd Annual event that happened this year on February 29th at 7A Ranch in Wimberley, TX. At that time I was really looking forward to returning to the show, I had no idea how much fun I was going to have.
Thursday the 27th I left my day job at Affordable Street Rods in Peabody, KS and headed south. After a 30 minute delay on the interstate a little after 11pm I finally got to my hotel in Alvarado, TX around 1 am.
Monkey is a hell of a character, whether it’s driving a blown t bucket in the rain or jumping unnaturally high as the flag man for the DuckusCrapus drags, we have a great time every time we hang out. This time we were riding around in his 1940 Ford Pickup truck and he told me the story of the truck and some interesting adventures he’s had in it along the way.
Each year before I go out to California for the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show I wonder to myself, is it really worth the expense and the time off of work to travel all the way out to CA again? Each year on the way home from the trip I remember that it certainly was worth it.
This episode Royboy sits down with Rex Watson of Affordable Street Rods in Peabody, KS. ASR is a hot rod parts shop that travels the country to vend at shows and is a typical American business story, the founder saw a need and fulfilled it, continuing to build the business as his customers showed him what areas he needed to be in. A video I shot a few years ago telling the story of Johnny Torres’ 1950 Plymouth. We sat down in his upholstery shop in Hutchinson, KS on a 5degree day and told the story. The car was resurrected from a basically abandoned derelict and built into a ride that’s been back and forth from Kansas to California repeatedly.
I hope you enjoy the video, I have one more done and ready to upload next month and a bunch more shot and awaiting editing!
Since 2010 a small and ever changing group of hot rod and custom folks have been gathering in Gypsum, KS to challenge the weather, to get one more drive in, to chase each other through central Kansas one more time before winter hits. We call it the Decembrrrr Run and this year it was a lot of fun, like always!
This September while attending the 2019 Hot Rod Hill Climb, I was told by Troy Hastings to keep the weekend of November 16th open for an event in Denver. That’s because Hastings is the President of the Denver Timing Association which was founded in 1949, making this the 70th Anniversary of the DTA, and this weekend was when the DTA had scheduled the Burnin’ Rubber Through History event. A retrospective of hot rodding featuring cars as old as 1918 and various cars from Colorado’s hot rodding history.
Back in early 2015 I went down to Tulsa, OK and hung out with my friend Doc Parsons and his wife Micah. I shot the video that you’ll see below, it was edited and uploaded to MotorNation as part of an episode of 3 car features. I’ll share the other videos and some more that I’ve shot over the years and haven’t shared yet over the next few months, enjoy!
Welcome one and all to the 2020 Royboy Calendar announcement page! Each year I go through all of the photos that I’ve taken in the previous 12 months and pick out my favorite images for the next year’s calendar!
Now, some say, “why didn’t you use my car????” and I always have the same response, it’s not just the car, it’s the car, the background, the photo, they all have to combine to be amongst the best that I felt that I captured the previous year. Below are the samples of the pages of the calendar. I hope you dig it!
How do you get one? Well, just click here, and you’ll go to the order page. Give it a second if it’s slow, the server has been slow lately and I’m working on fixing that! The calendars will ship the first week of NOVEMBER!
I seem to have a knack for missing the first time a cool event happens. This time I’d missed two instances of the Hot Rod Rock And Rumble held at Pikes Peak International Raceway, although I had a great reason to miss the first one as I was in the middle of the 48 Cars 48 States trip. Last year… Yeah I didn’t have much of an excuse.
In 2013 Mike Nicholas and some die hard friends brought back the Hot Rod Hill Climb as a tribute to the event that happened in 1953 and 1954 in Georgetown, CO. After a couple of years at that location, the venue changed to Central City, CO where the 2019 Hot Rod Hill Climb happened this year on Sept. 13-14.
In episode 192 our host Royboy attends the Lead Aint Dead show in Dewey, OK and brings you some of the best stories from the 2018 and 2019 Custom Conferences where custom guys sit around and tell road stories. Tune in and listen to some the tales.
September 7th, 2019 saw kustoms rolling in to tiny Dewey, OK for the 2nd annual Lead Ain’t Dead show. The Stray Kat Kustoms show is set up for kustoms and customs and features special parking for non-custom cool cars as well.
One of the visions that I’ve had for Royboy Productions is to have it be bigger than just me. To that end I’m hoping to get more people from across the country to share their photos of car shows and events with me so that I can share them with you.
Young Ryder Burford has shared some images of the 2019 Invasion in Dallas put on by THEM! CC and I’m sharing them with you!
In this episode our hero explains his absence and tells a brief version of what all has been going on for the last few months before playing some clips of short interviews recorded at the Greaserama over Labor Day Weekend 2019.
