About half way through the SWMO Hot Rod Hundred we stopped in Mt. Vernon, MO at Hot Shoe Hot Rods. Look in the 2nd half of this post to see a couple of images from that stop. Thanks to Hot Shoe for the donuts and waters, some much needed refreshments on the run!
This week’s coverage is brought to you by the Hot Rod Hundred. I’ve attended a few of these events in a couple of locations and they are a blast! I highly recommend that you join the fun at one of these events!
Unfortunately Bret, seen here leading in his 40 Ford, had some issues a couple of miles into the run so he had to limp it back home and meet us at the end. He wasn’t the only casualty of the run this year either, Corey had over heating issues just after leaving the starting point and another vehicle lost a rear wheel, but the wheel perfectly timed it’s departure and the truck was able to make it safely off of the road. Later in the run they were back with us again so hopefully no major damage was done.

I’ve attended the Southwest Missouri Hot Rod Hundred three times so far, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. By the official count there were 178 vehicles on the run this year, of course my main focus will always be the hot rods and kustoms in any event that I go to, but you’ll see a few more cars in this coverage as well.
The CrossMembers CC puts on the Hot Rod Hundred events across the country and I can only say a HUGE Thank You! to them for the efforts. Too many times we find ourselves sitting at car shows watching each other’s cars sitting at car shows. The Hot Rod Hundred is a bit different. Everyone gathers up at a rally point, follows a set route of about 100 miles and we have a stop or two along the way, at the end we go to a park for a short car show/hangout with some BBQ. It’s a good good time.

This week Royboy has help from his two Lonestar Round Up running buddies Steve and Dennis as they tell the story of the 1500 mile road trip down to the Lonestar Round Up and back.
Here it is, the final day of coverage of the 2017 Lonestar Round Up! I had an absolute blast hanging out with my rod/kustom family eating bbq, drinking free beers and vodka and enjoying the cars, show, and people. This week’s Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes episode features a full run down of the trip to Austin and back from myself and my two running buddies Steve and Dennis.
I spent so much time Saturday out taking photos that I missed most of the bands, the cacklefests and the minibike races, but I saw a ton of cars and talked with hundred or so friends. At somewhere around 3pm I looked out to the incoming street and saw that there were cars still showing up. I don’t know where they parked because there wasn’t much room left.
After Saturday’s show festivities some friends and I headed out to Murpho’s for their party. We got there early and enjoyed BBQ, free Vodka and watched the place fill to what I’m sure was more than capacity. A great band rocked the shop and folks enjoyed the booze and party until far after I had to wimp out and head back to the camper.
The 16th Annual Lonestar Round Up was a blast… once I got past my blues on Friday. The show Saturday was huge, I mean frigging huge. I’ve never seen that many cars at the show, both in the Feature area and in the general area. The music was amazing as always as well.
Today I’ll show you some more from the Feature Car area of the Lonestar Round Up. I’ve been attending this show for years and Friday has become my favorite day of the show. There is less of a crowd and most of the best cars are already there. Enjoy!
On Friday I showed you what I saw at the Meatheads CC BBQ and today I show you the start of the coverage from the event itself. One of the first cars that I see as I pull into the feature car area of the show is Ryno’s “Golden Goddess” Cadillac, after watching the build come together it was great to see the car in person. Congrats on another great car my friend.
The feature car area to me is what the Lonestar Round Up started as. The rest of the show you’ll see cars that wouldn’t have made the original versions of the show as they’ve been described to me, but the feature car area is made up of hot rods and customs selected from the pre-registered cars. That isn’t to say that every cool hot rod and custom in the show is in the feature car area, but the show does a great job of finding some of the best cars in the country that have pre-registered and selecting them for this area. The first couple of days of coverage will be from the feature car area of the show, enjoy!
This is a first, I’m writing this from the bunk in the camper out in the campground area of the Lonestar Round Up. After leaving Wednesday around 1pm I met up with Dennis Saum from Nebraska and then Steve from McPherson and we headed south. The 30 mph tail wind sure helped the ol Galaxie and camper down the road! I need to change the rear gear from the 2.75 back to the 3.50 gears, the car is just working too hard to motivate the extra weight, much like me climbing a hill.
Thursday around 11 am we arrived at the Meatheads CC BBQ out in Beyersville, TX. Great food, beer, friends and cars, what’s not to like? Enjoy the photos.

A few years ago Kevin Anderson and Bob Davis started the Custom Car Revival in Indianapolis, IN. What they wanted was a custom only event to celebrate the Westergard to Watson era of custom cars, what they got was so much more. The show has turned into 200 incredible customs and their owners, and a weekend of hanging out with some great people.
I first attended the show in 2014, as soon as we rolled in late Thursday afternoon I was blown away by the cars in the parking lot of the host hotel. Thursday evening there’s food and hanging out in the parking lot. Friday is a day of exploring Indy, Anderson has said that they didn’t want a show where folks just sat behind their cars for 2 days and some tours of the great city of Indianapolis seemed a great way to spend Friday.

This week Royboy talks with Heath Murray of Murray Kustom Rods of Fort Worth, TX. We talk about everything from kustom Chevys to 90’s car audio, to 1400 HP Corvettes at the Texas Mile.
Way back in 2010 I drove 9 hours into northwest Iowa for a first time show with no idea what I was getting myself into. My buddy John Wells was putting together the first ever Vintage Torque Fest, a car show with an indoor area for feature cars, a dirt track for the folks that wanted to take a couple of laps and a great vibe, something that many shows just don’t have.

I remember seeing a listing for the Stray Kat 500 a long long time ago in the back of some magazine. I thought, what a cool name for a show! It was a couple of years before I got myself down to Dewey, OK and when I finally made it, I never missed another ‘500’ again.
That first year that I made it had to be 2010 if my memory serves correctly, it was just a year or two later that I got my folks to join me and they have been coming since as well. See a theme developing? This is one of those great shows that is hard to really describe correctly. The best way I’ve found is to call it a family reunion, where you just aren’t related to everyone and they all bring their cool cars. That’s a bit of a misnomer though, because by the time you leave the 5oo, you ARE family, you’re part of the Stray Kat Family.

For the last few years we’ve had a fun little show in our town on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. It’s really about gathering up some of our great car friends and just having a good time. It’s called the Gypsum Pie Festival and Car Show and it’s coming up again May 28th in Gypsum, KS. Scroll down for more info and photos from the last few years!

Here’s some Go Pro Video from the starting line on Saturday, and a whole bunch of burnouts!

As I drove to Texas for the Texas Thaw I wondered what kind of effect if any there would be by sharing the weekend with the March Meet out in California. There are a bunch of front engine dragsters in the midwest and I know that some of them go out to CA for the March Meet. I was thoroughly surprised at a couple of the amazing machines that showed up at the North Star Dragway for Texas Thaw. The Trans Am Funny Car above and the twin engine flathead powered Front Engine Dragster below. Amazing machinery was all around. This is the last photo post of the event coverage, check back tomorrow for some video!

For part 3 of the 2017 Texas Thaw coverage I’m at the starting line of the strip. Literally where the rubber meets the road. Big smokey burnouts, hot rods, drag cars and some guys that drove to and from the track while taking some passes while they were there.

For part 2 of the 2017 Texas Thaw coverage I continue in the car show area of the event. The Torques club has space for about 100 show cars with some overflow that was completely filled up this year. Any more than that and you start to eat into the amount of space you have for the race vehicles, trucks, and trailers. The North Star Dragway gets filled up quick with the cars starting to roll in around 8am and by 11 the place is full and cars are still coming in.

On March 4th, 2017 I went down to North Star Dragway for the Texas Thaw. I try to make it each year for the event, it’s a fun day of drags and show where the gate proceeds go to a great cause, sending care packages to members of our military overseas. I’ll bring you more photos all week long and maybe some video too 🙂

This week Royboy tests out the new headset mic in the camper. Is it a rant? Is it rambling? Is it incoherent mumbling? Probably all three but the only way to find out is to listen… Oh and this one has some bad language, you’ve been warned.
Here’s a couple photos of the camper project:
Lots of rot in the old roof. There’s not much wood that was exposed to the outside world that wasn’t destroyedUsing the Kreg jig to assemble a new front window frame after the old one disintegrated when we removed it.
