As I type this it’s midnight on Sunday after the 2016 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, KS. The Kustom Kemps Of America has been doing the Leadsled Spectacular show for 36 years with the last 10 or so being held here in Salina. The show has grown year after year despite high temps and less than pleasant humidity.
“THE LEGENDARY GENE WINFIELD , has chopped many tops through the years, but the first car he ever sectioned was a ’56 Merc !
That iconic custom was christened the “Jade Idol”, and I wanted Gene to give me the lowdown on sectioning that car…and the full-story of what has to be done during that entire process.
This is a cool Interview, and you won’t want to miss Gene’s stories…not only about the Jade Idol, BUT, about his own chopped & sectioned ’58 Impala ! To listen, just Click-On-This-Link: http://www.legends.thewwbc.net/gpage188.html “
Bonus Day of 2016 Meltdown Drags Coverage! Well, I shot more than I thought I did. It was a long day, but amazingly rewarding. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone involved in putting on the Meltdown Drags and again to Speedway Motors for making this all possible! The support that Speedway has given has made most of the 2016 coverage possible. There will be no coverage next week since I’m not going to a show this weekend but after that it’s time for the 2016 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular !
This week Royboy and Todd Jones talk on the road on the way home from the Meltdown Drags. It’s midnight Saturday night and we’ve been gone since 6am, we get a little punch drunk.
Throughout Saturday at the 2016 Meltdown Drags Todd and I went from the pits to the swap meet to the car show and back to the track for more racing action. In 13 hours we walked a few miles, it was a heck of a day! We got to spend some time talking with some of my favorite car folks that I don’t get to see nearly often enough. Looks like I’ve got enough photos for a bonus day so look for that to come tomorrow!
The 2016 Meltdown Drags had so much going on that I quite frankly missed a bit of it. There were cars that I never saw on the track, sooooo sorry I didn’t get action shots of them. What I was doing was sitting and talking with some older gents that have been there and done that and had the stories to tell. It was far too loud to try to record them but we’ll see about getting them on the podcast in the future.
As we walked through the pits of the 2016 Meltdown Drags it was a seemingly never ending supply amazing drag machines. In it’s 7th year the Meltdown Drags they have grown from about 40 cars to over 600, with an estimated 400 in the car show area. One of my favorite parts of the event is checking out the names of the cars.
After driving up to Iowa for the 4th time this year I finally made it to my buddy Todd’s place around 10pm. His family had the couch ready to go for me so after a few hours of sleep we headed out at 6am for Byron, IL. We took some great 2 lane back roads and got to the track in time to make a lap through the pits before the driver’s meeting.
Here’s the story of my trip to the 2016 Meltdown Drags. Last year was my first trip to the Meltdown Drags, it was a trip I couldn’t have afforded to go on until Speedway Motors stepped up to sponsor my coverage. This year they again made it possible for me to make the trip to Byron Dragway for the 7th Annual Meltdown Drags. This is one of the best events in the country, there’s really not much more that needs to be said. The event had somewhere north of 600 cars this year, all 66 and older, and man o man were there some great rides! From the minute that we walked into the event it was nothing but “hey look at that” and “oh man check that out,” Todd Jones and I were like kids in the toy store the week before Christmas.
So, it wasn’t totally a day off but this weekend I didn’t have anything on the books so I went down to hang out with some friends in Wichita. The Automobilia show is this weekend and honestly it’s not my favorite show. I go more to hang out with the people than see the show, it’s always too hot and too many looky-lou non car people.
For the final post from the 2016 Goodguys Heartland Nationals I’ll share some shots from the Duel In Des Moines Autocross action and some more shots as I continued to walk the fairgrounds. I ran out of time and didn’t get to see the over 4,000 cars in attendance but I gave it a good effort. This is my favorite GG show, if you have never been, I highly recommend it.
While a giant rain storm caused issues from Oklahoma through Nebraska the edge of it was right over Des Moines. We had bouts of sprinkles but never all out rain. It sure helped keep the temps down and the day was downright pleasant. The crowd didn’t seem as big as normal but I heard that Friday’s crowd was big so maybe it was just spread out from what I am used to.
After strolling through the area of the show full up with 1932 Fords I went on through this next section. As I walked through the area I ran into Chris and Karma Carlson. Evil Karma had a bucket of amazing chocolate chip cookies that she force fed to a group of us. It was torture, pure delicious torture. If you go to the Des Moines GoodGuys Heartland Nationals, get yourself some of those cookies, period. You’ll thank me.
Since the rain was ending just as I got to the Iowa State Fairgrounds, it was fitting that the spectators poured in all morning. If I could have something to complain about it’s that there are just sooooo many people at this event. That’s a small price to pay for one of the best GoodGuys events on the schedule each year.
For a quarter century the Goodguys Heartland Nationals have been bringing cool cars to Des Moines, IA. This year with Independence Day on Monday giving many folks a 3 day weekend the Iowa State Fairgrounds were packed with people and cars. When I checked in around 9 am they were registering car number 3984. There was a light rain that had just rolled through and a cool breeze made for a pretty fantastic morning.
I didn’t get to check out the Autocross action due to the track finally getting wet, the timing didn’t work out. No worries though as I’m sure I’ll see plenty of racing action this weekend in Des Moines.
The rains stayed away mostly through the morning, just a few sprinkles here and there. The temps were low, which kept it pretty tolerable. As we walked around I got to see friends from across the region, the Wolk family and their trio of rides, Bill Wiekert and his Sledsel, GasserLouie and is beautiful “Gold Digger,” and a bunch of buddies from Omaha that I’d be shooting with on Sunday. Great people make good car shows better.
For the last 2 days I showed you the Speedway Motors Kickoff Party for the the 2016 GoodGuys Day At The Hay. I had a great time meeting folks, eating BBQ & ice cream and hanging out with friends until nearly Midnight. Saturday morning I headed over to the Haymarket area to the show with an eye on the sky. There was a pretty serious rain storm moving in as I left the hotel, it was raining on me and I was sure that the morning would be postponed a bit. We lucked out for the first few hours of the show.
It’s no secret that it has been hot in the midwest lately. The Friday of the kickoff party at Speedway Motors was no exception. I was grateful for the food tent, smattering of trees and slight breeze as I walked the parking lot checking out all of the cars that you see here.
Last year a new Goodguys event was announced that was bit of a departure from some of the other events on the schedule. This one was to be a one day event held in Lincoln, NE. I went and took my dad and my uncle, we had a great time even though we felt like we were melting. So this year I was excited to get to go again.
As happened last year, Speedway Motors hosted a kickoff party on Friday evening. The parts counter was open, there was a DJ set up, lots of giveaways, free BBQ and folks could take a tour of the incredible Museum of American Speed on the grounds next door to Speedway. There were probably 300-400 cars in the parking lot and tons of folks walking around.
I had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of the Speedway employees this weekend, a great group of folks. More to come all week long.
