Shoeboxes shoeboxes shoeboxes!

Those of you that know me know that I’ve recently purchased a 51 Ford, affectionately known as a shoebox. I’ve loved this body style for quite awhile and I’m excited to get started working on mine later this year (after finishing some upgrades to the 63 Galaxie).

So as I was looking through my site I realized that I have a ton of shoebox photos! I started gathering them up and so far from the first gallery up through the 2012 Lonestar Roundup gallery there are over 414 photos of shoeboxes of various forms and levels of kustomizing.  You can see the whole gallery here if you’d like to look around.

I am no expert but here is some info that I’ve been able to pick up along the way. (for more detailed info you can go to the Wiki page here)

So what years of the Ford are considered shoeboxes?
1949-1951 due to their “slab side” design, gone are the bulging fenders and they are replaced with a relatively straight body shell.

Here’s an example of the side of the body.

Compared to the 46-48 style before it.

How do you tell the years apart?

Here is an example of a 49, note the single “bullet” grille, triangular turn signals at the end of the grille bar and the FORD letters on the hood.

The 50 carries on the single bullet design but moves to a  rectangular turn signals in the trim pieces that wrap around the front bumper and badge at the front of the hood.

By 1951 they moved to the easily identifiable double bullet grille design and round turn signals.

Roofs
While many chop their shoeboxes, I am torn on what I will do. Speaking of roofs though, here’s an example of the Victoria model roof.

VS. the standard sedan roof

Here’s an example of the factory coupe roofline

They also came in the Country Squire “woody” version
2011StrayKat500_0729

Drivetrains
From the factory these cars came with flathead 6’s or 8’s. My 51 came with a 239 cu. in flathead V8 “8BA” motor and a 3speed with Overdrive transmission. I have heard that there were automatics available in 51 with the Ford-o-matic transmission. Atomic Hot Rods just released a cool documentary on the Flathead last year called A Sweet Sickness: The Flathead Movie Go to the site to order a copy for yourself, click here to see the trailer.

Suspension
These cars all have coil springs in the front and leaf spring setups in the back. The most common way to get them down a ways is to use Moog CC850 Variable Rate Coil Spring in the front and simple Lowering Blocks in the back. For a ton of info on that see this thread on the H.A.M.B.

Some kool kustoms that have inspired me

Clean, low and with a tricked out flathead under the hood. I’m told this belongs to Roy Fields and I need to meet him to say thanks for the inspiration.

Another very clean example this time with I believe a 53 Chevy grille, I don’t know the owners name but this appears to have been at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, KS at the old location.

My buddy Jack’s 50.

Another buddy’s sectioned shoebox

With kustom work by Premier Body & Paint’s Jeff Myers in Arkansas City, KS Michael Shea’s shoebox is way kool.

Another way kustom version, chopped top, Olds grille, lots of kool touches all around.

Yaril drove his 50 all the way from Miami, FL to Salina, KS for the 2011 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular.

Here’s a clone of Junior Conway’s 50. For more info on the original go to this link at kustomrama.

That’s it for now, I may revisit this later and talk some more about these cars.
Oh I almost forgot a silly cell phone pic of mine.

See you at a show,

Travis

9/14/13 Update: I had my buddy Chris over at Shoebox Central look through here for any errors, thanks for taking the time Chris! If anyone needs parts for their Shoebox Ford or even some Merc stuff of the era, head over to Shoebox Central.

Big plans being made!

A group of my Stray Kat brothers and myself are planning a major road trip for next spring. From my home near Salina, KS (home of the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular) to Wichita, KS then Vegas for the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend, then to Austin for the Lonestar Roundup and back home. I’ll keep you posted on what the plan is, and of course I’ll blog from the road on that trip. 3250 miles in a bunch of kustoms in various states of build across the midwest and southwest and back. It should be an adventure!

Here’s what I saw on my last trip to Viva in 2010

And here’s this year’s coverage of the Lonestar Roundup.

Looks like a good time to me! See you at a show, Travis

A Busy Weekend Part 3: Lake Afton All Wheels Car Show

Part 3 of my busy weekend was a Sunday drive down to Lake Afton, west of Wichita, KS. People have told me about this show for years and I’ve never been able to make it until now. A free show for both the spectators and the show vehicles, I had my resevations, but I was proven wrong. A great turnout of every imaginable kind of vehicle and tons of great people.

Although the show officially starts at 11, there were around 100 cars there at 10 when I showed up.

The scene at 10am

The Thunderbird club showed up in full force!

Kevin’s 64 Galaxie for the 2nd day in a row, always good to see you my friend!

The Mini club showed up too!

A Busy Weekend Part 2: Showdown In The Valley

From Garnett (see part 1) I headed out to Mulvane, KS home of the Mulvane Marauders.
This part was another fun drive, exploring country side, just randomly heading south and west until I got close to the show.

That was a fun drive! I got to see some of the grain storage facilities that I’d done the mechanical and fabrication drawings for, drove a new section of one of my favorite roads, an old section of highway just outside of most people’s point of view while they cruise on US-400, had a burger at the historic Beaumont Hotel and explored a fun new-to-me road between Latham and Douglass, KS.

Once I arrived in Mulvane it’s the same story as every other time, the many friends I’ve made in the Marauders make me feel at home. This show is held on the old main street area of Mulvane and features some of the over 160 members of the club’s rides as well as many area cars. The Marauders gave away a freshly rebuilt engine this year along with a huge table full of door prizes and some killer trophies made by various members of the Marauders.

I really dig this killer Merc kustom, check out the headlights…

Some high dollar rides showed up

Chris and Karma Carlson of Chaotic Customs drive this 60 Pontiac named Stella nearly every day, and judging by the color of the back tire, Chris didn’t get the kids to clean Stella after driving down the dirt road they live on. That’s dedication, live on a dirt road and drive a ride like this!

Jason of Red House Custom Paint was in attendance.

Mike’s 29 Roadster

One of my favorite cars of the show, Kent drives the heck out of her too!

Another 51 Ford! This time with the 6 cylinder drive train.

Interesting dash

Bill Hines and crew chopped this at the KKOA in 2009 I believe. Love the chop and the color!

Kevin’s 64 Galaxie

Congrats Kent!

That’s it for the 2nd part, a drive up to Gypsum would end my day driving around central-eastern KS. Hope you enjoyed the coverage, stay tuned to the blog with RSS feeds or email updates so  you know when I’ve updated the blog.

See you at a show!

A Busy Weekend Part 1: Lake Garnett Cruisers Car Show

A few weeks ago I realized that last weekend there was a choice, either stay in KS and go to a show that I’d gone to before (and loved) or venture a few hundred miles from home for the Good Guys show in Loveland, CO. Since I’d been planning on being in Colorado this weekend to film a small BBQ team in competition with the giants of the BBQ world, I decided to stay in Kansas.

So how would I make the weekend special? It didn’t take long to figure it out, 3 shows, 1 weekend… all in Kansas! Saturday started off at a lazy 7:30am as I headed east out of the small town of Gypsum, KS headed for the slightly larger city of Garnett, about 154 miles away.

The show in Garnett is held around the old time town square, these types of shows always have built in cool factor. Click any of these photos to go to the whole photo gallery, I will not be posting every photo here so that’s the best way to see them all.

Nice Ghia!

The show was an interesting mix of muscle cars, trucks, kustoms, hot rods, street rods, motorcycles and even a rat rod along with some stockers and radical customs.

My good friend Neal made the trip in his Canopy Express, seen here on the right.

This well put together Chevy has got to attract bugs like crazy with that shade of  yellow!

I’m not sure what the story is on this car, I’m guessing it was shortened from a full or mid sized wagon, anyone have the skinny on it?

Everyone needs one of these VW Trucks

I’ve seen this mild kustom around a couple of the Stray Kat shows but I can’t remember if I’ve met the owner yet. When you meet the owners of the car away from the car sometimes it’s hard to remember who’s face belongs with which car.

Street Rod style post war Ford

Having just picked up a 51 Ford I am naturally drawn to every 49-51 that I see, always looking for ideas.

A very nicely done 80’s era Chevrolet Truck.

A way Kustom truck, lots to see on this wild pickup.

Travel in style

Some of the fairly stock crowd in attendance

Roger Ward’s beautiful ride, Roger won the Inspiration award this year at the Stray Kat 500. Jeff Myers built a killer trophy that was color matched to Roger’s car.

Many cars had taken refuge from the sun under the square’s many trees.

A nicely built Willys

Gotta love a Starliner

One of the historic buildings that lines the square, probably seen many a summer day with the townsfolk gathered getting to know each other and celebrate holidays and the like.

I love this 46 Ford, and it’s for sale. Click on any of these photos to go to the full gallery and I have the for sale placard pictured with a ton more info for you.

There were 3 nearly identical drag cars in attendance. I never did catch up with an owner to get the story on these.

1 of 50 explains why I’d never come across one before.

One of my favorite vehicles ever produced, I’d love to drive one some day.

Then back out into the sunshine!

Another Street Rod’d beauty

My 2nd wild Cadillac turned truck in 2 weeks… hope this isn’t a resurgent trend!

Another beautiful historic building overlooking the square and the weekend’s activities.

That’s about it for the coverage of the Lake Garnett Cruisers Car Show in Garnett, KS. Hope you enjoyed it! From here I went down to Mulvane, KS for the Showdown In The Valley put on by the Mulvane Marauders. Look for that tomorrow in part 2!

If you see any photos that you’d like to have a copy of, just click on it and you’ll be taken to the gallery where you can buy digital downloads, prints, calendars, posters, etc. Every purchase helps me get to the next show!

See you at a show,

Travis

What the heck have I been up to? 5/30/12

Last weekend on a whim I decided to head up to Lincoln, NE to the Hot Rod Supernationals car show.

Here’s a slideshow of the coverage of that event. Lots of muscle cars, street rods and a few traditional hot rods & kustoms. Click the slideshow to go to the gallery and see the entire collection.

The previous weekend was the 30th Annual Atwood Early Rod Run in Atwood, KS. Here’s the slideshow for that coverage. Click the slideshow to go to the gallery and see the entire collection.

This weekend I’ll be off to Marysville, KS for the AutoFest. Here’s last year’s coverage of AutoFest, Click the slideshow to go to the gallery and see the entire collection.

2012 Stray Kat 500 is just around the corner!

May 4-6, 2012 will be the 11th annual Stray Kat 500 in Dewey, OK. I don’t have much time to talk about this killer show right now so I’ll let the photos do the talking.  For more info on the show go to straykatkustoms.com or go to the Facebook event page for the show here.

Without further ado, here’s the 2011 Stray Kat 500 photos, click on the slideshow to go to the photos if you’d prefer to view them in a gallery format.

Come check out one of the koolest most laid back shows anywhere, and hang with about 500 of the greatest folks on the planet. See you in Dewey! Travis

Royboy Productions covers the 2012 Lonestar Roundup! Part 11-13

Part 11!

Continuing with Saturday, somewhere in here it rained on us ever so slightly, but according to others it poured on the other side of the fairgrounds, right place right time I guess!

This is the only shot I got of this coupe…stupid me, I forgot to walk back around to the front (this was shot from a long ways away from behind).

Part 12… this is getting ridiculous no?

Just can’t show this beauty enough

Forgive me Father for I have sinned… I am posting a hideous rat…but you’ll see why…

Purrrrrdy flathead

Part 13….eeeeery

Click on any of these to go to the full gallery but as of Monday morning when this is posted I’m only done uploading the photos through Thursday evening so the rest will be coming as soon as I can get them done.

Thursday night on Congress.

Bob K!

Due to some traffic issues we showed up late to the Garage Crawl, that was fine because we were in the right neighborhood and it’s not hard to spot that long line of fantastic rides, so we followed them to Mercury Charlie’s shop.

Just a touch of talent in this group…

Lots of folks at Mercury Charlie’s shop!

Cars rolling out to the next stop on the crawl.

Still on the Friday Garage Crawl we stopped by Jeff’s Resurrections in Taylor, TX, on the way to his shop we see this sign atop the old Chevrolet dealership.

I’ll come back and edit those power lines out later…

Looks like Jeff and crew do a ton of very nice work, just not all of it is H.A.M.B. material, click on any of these photos to see more of the cars under construction at Jeff’s Resurrections.

Then it was about a 25 minute drive back towards Austin to the Lonestar Roundup at the Travis County Expo Center.

Friday at the Travis Co Expo Center.

More Bob K

Voodoo Jim

Finkd (Jeff Myers) 63 Galaxie

Still Friday and still in the first area of the show. This was my favorite part of the show, some great cars, and because of the grassy area they were in they were not parked so rigidly along parking lot lines.

The Car Corral section had some cool rides for sale like this one

Stopped and talked with the Lonely Knights of Colorado for a bit, they’d just come from Viva the previous weekend and had a special guest rolling with them, more about that in a minute.

Here’s the special guest. A Merc picked up in NJ, shipped to Australia, converted to RH drive and kustomized a bit more, then shipped back to the states to hit Viva and Roundup as part of a good ol’ fashioned American Road Trip. Damn cool car, I wish I had the opportunity to meet the owner too.

Still at the show on Friday, still loving being at this show and in Austin in general, being back home today makes me miss Austin…

Hmmm it’s for sale, do I tell my dad or not, he’s got himself just about every other Chevy truck that’s been for sale in the history of man…

Lots of work here

I was infatuated with this tall beauty…

Pure awesomeness, seeing it driving down Congress was equally as awesome.

And on to the show…

And on to Saturday!

Still on Saturday, the show got huge both in cars and spectators, finding good shots without random people in the background became harder, but that’s the name of the game when trying to cover a show…

And what a colorful show it is!

This 53 Ford was for sale

Please don’t look too hard at the truck behind this one…ooof

This one had a for sale sign too…

and it was hauling this kool little wagon…

Pre-Lonestar Roundup Post! and a 40% off Sale!

2011 was the first trip to the Lonestar Roundup for me. I was immediately hooked on the show. Being in Austin doesn’t hurt at all, that town is awesome and I rarely stray from either Congress St or my hotel :).
So here we are, it’s 2012, it’s 10:00pm on Wednesday night and I roll out for the roundup at 5:30am tomorrow…and I’m writing this 🙂 I wanted to share some photos from last year’s show so you had an idea of what’s to come. Over the next 4 days I’ll be shooting stills with my Nikon D90 and some video with various cameras, but I’ll also be taking some cell phone pics along the way. The 2012 Lonestar Roundup shots will be in this gallery, it’s pretty boring right now with just my logo as a placeholder.
So back to 2011, some H.A.M.B. members and Austin locals put together a killer garage crawl, I love these type events so of course I had to go on it (and stay to the back of the crowd in my modern daily driver as I will do again this year).
All of the photos posted below are part of the 2011 Lonestar Roundup Gallery, which is on sale until Monday at 40% off! Any print up to poster sizes, any download, any item listed in the “buy” button is on sale for 40% off just by entering the code “LSRU” at check out. Click on any of these photos to go to their page, and then look around at some of the over 700 photos in the total gallery.

What the heck did I do this week? 4-9-2012

I haven’t posted here in a long time… almost a month. There just hasn’t been much going on.
I did get the honor of spending an afternoon with the Fundamentals club out of Wichita, 9 guys showed up and we filmed a 3 hour interview, talking about kustoms and hot rods and the old days. It was one of the coolest afternoons I’ve ever had.
Other than that March was a month of laying low, saving up some money for Austin for the Lonestar Roundup this weekend.  I’ve been busy on Instagram, there will be a few photos below, and there is a 40% off sale going on for all of the 2011 Lonestar Roundup gallery (enter the code “LSRU” at checkout and get any print or download for 40% off, pretty sweet!).
Some Instagram shots from the last few weeks…

In just 3 days my buddy Mongo and I will be rolling into Austin for the Lonestar Roundup! We’re stoked to get to make this trip, a 2nd for me and a first for him. It would be cooler to be taking the Galaxie but that just wasn’t possible budget wise, but we will be there and I will be wearing out my shutter finger trying to bring you all of the LSRU goodness.
If you haven’t already seen it yet here’s a new hat that came out this week. You can get it in 3 different styles of hats, in tons of different colors. The version pictured has been the most favorite so far but you can stand apart from the crowd by getting one of the other colors.
We’re just under a month away from the Stray Kat 500, so get your registrations in and meet us in Dewey, OK for one of the koolest parties on the planet. Here’s a couple shots of our buddies from Pushrod playing there last year.

Next week I’ll be sharing tons of photos from the Lonestar Roundup so be sure to check back in.
See you at a show,
Travis

What the heck did I do this week? 3-10-2012

Wild week here for Royboy Productions! Saturday I took the new video crane over to shoot some of Jeff Bennett’s Rat built by Calvins Customs in Salina, KS, then I went down to McPherson, KS to film some of the frame construction of my buddy Mongo’s new hot rod pickup.

Right as I was heading for the door, it happened. A flaming ball of metal hit my right eye. No I was not wearing goggles, yes I should have been. After a considerable amount of stinging and quite a few tries at flushing the lil bugger out, I finally got it once I got myself home and I went off to bed.

Three hours later I find myself standing in front of my bathroom sink, not able to open my eyes. Oh crap, I kinda need those. Turns out in addition to the slag hit, I had inadvertently exposed my eyes to far too much UV…yeah I had welders burn. At the time I didn’t know it, I just knew that it was the middle of the night and I could’t see, so off to the ER I went, just to be safe.  I had taken precautions to protect my eyes during most of the frame build, but I know me… I got careless when my monkey brain went oh oh oh oh I see what would be a cool shot and I moved myself out of my pre-thought position which was protecting my eyes from most of the UV. Monkey brain cost me a bunch of money that evening, not to mention the pain.

So not much was done in my world for most of the week, the day job took precedence, and I did little more than get the video footage transferred to the computer. There were some Instagram shots here and there like I always do you can follow royboyprods there to follow my shots. A mid week sale on any item in my portfolio and now a sale on the softcover version of my Best Of 2011 photo book.

I know the books are expensive, that’s a byproduct of them being 160 pages and printed by a print on demand publisher. Without investing a few thousand on my part there is just no way to get the price down. I will start producing some smaller cheaper books for folks that want them, keep on the lookout for that.

Right now it’s time to head out the door to Arkansas City, KS to Premier Body & Paint the shot of Jeff Myers to sit down with Jeff and talk about his beautiful Caddy and Galaxie. Both cars are way kool kustoms that are driven, should be a good day! Next weekend it’s off to Wichita to talk with some members of the legendary car club, the Fundamentals about Wichita’s hot rod and kustom history, also should be a very good day.

Premier Paint & Body 4-23-11

Premier Paint & Body 4-23-11

If you live within a decent drive of Salina, KS and you want a video produced of your kool kustom or hot rod, drop me a note here. I am looking to shoot a few for content on my site and will be glad to give you a discounted price because of it!

Have a great weekend, stay safe, and I’ll see you at a show,

Travis

What the heck did I do this week?

This is the first of what I hope to be a weekly post on here with a quick rundown of what is happening in the world of Royboy Productions.

Last weekend was the 2012 edition of the Park City Chill bike and car show in Park City, KS. I shared some of the photos from that show in a blog post here and you can see all of the photos in the full gallery here.

I’ve been promoting the new Best of 2011 photo book this week. It is available in 3 different versions. Hard cover and soft cover versions are available through my new Blurb store and the downloadable PDF version is available through the Royboy Productions home page.

Royboy Productions Coverage: 2012 Park City Chill- Park City, KS

This was my 2nd trip to the Park City Chill Bike and Car Show in Park City, KS just outside of Wichita. This is a nice indoor show with plenty to look at.

My buddies from Zombie Speed Shop in Winfield, KS (now working with Chaotic Customs in Mulvane, KS) brought out some of their rides including Corey’s International.

Johnny Hammon brought out this very cool 47 Chevrolet

This Merc was reportedly customized in 1961 and has not been touched since, recently being retrieved from storage it was definitely cool to check out.

One of the cars that Ron Pinkston’s Hooligans Hot Rods has worked on.

Kind of hard to see here but this car and bike were built by the Peabody High School shop classes, very cool!

For the 2nd week in a row I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Vibrasonic. Once again I’m so very proud of a bunch of my friends stepping up to help finish the late Elden Titus’ final build, you guys are what this is all about.

Factory fuel injection but I don’t know if that was original on this car or out of a Corvette, I apologize for my ignorance!

Our very own ButchM’s 56 Chevy

And a very cool inline 6 powered 53 Chevy

Part 2

One clean 58 with a tri-power 348

A wild old school kustom Falcon, but I don’t know if it technically meets our year requirements here, it’s been kustomized enough I honestly don’t know what year it is.

And that’s it for the H.A.M.B. friendlys in this set. There are a bunch more shots of cars and bikes in the show gallery, you can get to see them by clicking any of these photos.

See you at a show,

Travis

Starbird Exotic Car Show, Tulsa, OK

A few weeks ago Straykatkustoms (Mick) texted me that he was going to go to the National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and the announcement of the Fine Nine qualifiers for the Tulsa Starbird show. It took me about 5 minutes to decide that sounded like an interesting way to spend a Friday night and get my ticket ordered. I won’t be missing another one, what a great experience! Tons of great folks were in attendance and we heard some great stories about the inductees, it was very worth it!

On to the Show!

This was the unveiling of the Vibrasonic, a kustom that was started by the late Elden Titus and finished with the help of a ton of his friends. It was very cool to see the car painted and assembled and out on display!

Congrats to everyone involved on this very cool build.

Tom Martinez brought out his killer hot rod again, love this car

A selection of Starbird builds were on display of course

Love this pickup, Justin Hartman’s 57 was part of the Fine Nine

One of my favorite kustom shoeboxes

Murphy brought his way wild Ford

Another good looking shoebox

Part 2

We’ll start out with the one ride that brought the most comments (outside of the feature cars), everyone loves this Willys!

Lot’s of gassers in OK, and I’m not mad about that.

I think I’m seeing double

Hey! You! Customs are not supposed to have their hoods up! jk

Butta, smooth like butta…

Part 3!

Starting with some FED love today

The Legends table!

Lil’ Coffin

Sorry for the short post on this one, there’s not much else in the gallery that’s H.A.M.B. material. As always if you want to see the whole gallery click any of the photos.

I’m heading out the door to cover The Chill show in Park City, KS where a bunch of my friends are hanging out this weekend. I know that the Zombie Speed Shop boys are there, as well as the Vibrasonic and I’m sure the crew from Chaotic Customs. Maybe we’ll see some surprise folks too, stay tuned!

See ya at a show,

Travis

O’reilly Auto Parts World of Wheels, Kansas City, MO

Finally I’m getting a few minutes here where I can try to catch up!

I don’t have a ton of time so I’ll just get to the photos for this post.

There’s always a nice selection of FED’s at the KC WOW.

As well as some other great drag cars

Beautiful Ford Kustom Pickup

Jetter’s beautiful Caddy

Pure elegance

I see this Merc a lot so I hope I’m showing it off well enough for you guys, sometimes I don’t take shots of the cars that I see everywhere as much. This one certainly deserves to be shown.

Smile for the camera…

A beautiful build. I don’t have time to look it up right now but do yourself a favor and go find the shots that NotStock Photography took of this beauty, just amazing.

Of course, the Mantaray!

Part 2

I know nothing about this 27 T Roadster except that it belongs to Joe Boyles, does anyone have any history on it?

Congratulations to Ron Dubberstein & his 1955 Chevy “Exota” for winning 3 Excellence Awards at Kansas City World of Wheels! His awards were for Best Radical Custom, Best Display and BEST PAINT. Paint & body by Chaotic Customs and airbrushing by Redhouse Custom Paint.

Chad Kolman showed up with a 1947 Buick that was very very nice. 3 year project from what I was told. I can’t wait to get a chance to take more photos of this beautiful new kustom.

Fresh from being finished and striped hours before the show move in.

Home run Chad! Great looking kustom.

Part 3

The Roswell Rod was in attendance.

Love this ultra rare Hupmobile

And this under construction hot rod with kustom flavor

Love me a fastback roofline

There are a bunch more photos in this gallery, they’re just not H.A.M.B. type rides, if you want to see them just click any of the photos in this thread and you’ll be taken to the gallery.

Thanks for looking and I’ll see ya at a show,

Travis

Eric Myers from Los Punk Rods has been working on a new project, looking pretty sinister so far!

Now this looks like a lot of fun

Starbird-Devlin Car Show Wichita, KS

Royboy’s Coverage of the 2012 Starbird-Devlin Car Show in Wichita, KS

I was lucky enough to be able to spend most of the weekend with friends and hotrod/kustom family at the Century II hall in Wichita for the 2012 Starbird-Devlin Car Show.

I don’t have much time right now so I’ll skip the stories and just show you some pics, of course we start off with the Mulvane Marauders and our own Yblock292’s 29 Roadster, but that’s just because they were parked about 20 feet inside the door.

Then Fuddpuckers Chrysler “The Tiki Taxi”

Then we skip ahead a bit to Gene Weaver’s beautiful 54 Chevrolet. There are a bunch more photos of the show of cars that aren’t H.A.M.B. friendly so just click any of these photos to see the whole gallery.

Then it’s on to one of my favorite Caddy’s in the Wichita area.

Respect

Love this flatty powered ride

I didn’t attend the awards but I know I heard this one was announced over the P.A.

I’ll need to get some more shots of this 53 Chevy Gasser with the straight 6 this year, hoping to do a full feature for it when I revamp my site.

Doug Reed’s gorgeous 49 Olds “Toad”

Here’s a Plymouth that I hope to be featuring soon as well.

Pure beauty right here

Part 2 of the coverage starts off with this kool little 50 Ford SW… I didn’t take enough shots of it… sorry.

Ed Pogue’s beautiful 47 Ford had me staring for awhile

One of the Devlin family’s rides

This one might be familiar to some of you.

Another of the Devlin’s rides

Mike Buchanan’s FED

The World Famous Doc Parsons’ 23 Ford

Butch M’s 56 Chevy

This is for sale

Here’s a couple from the balcony

Part 3!

In addition to the kool kustoms and hot rods there was a nice gathering of bikes.

This 1955 Olds was new to me

Roger Morrison brought this beautiful 32 out that’s been at Pebble Beach before…

The first name of this show is still Starbird, Darryl brought up the Predicta, I always loved this car. Hub Harness was telling me how everyone told Darryl that he couldn’t drive this car so he took it down the strip. The steering is controlled by a lever in the center console, push forward to turn one way, pull back to turn another. Darryl told Hub that it was scary but he made the run.

Thanks for going along with me to the 2012 Starbird-Devlin Car Show! This is just the first event of 2012 there are 18 more on my schedule for this year, last year I hit 35 total so I’m sure that 18 will grow before long.

Click any of the photos to go to the whole gallery and see a total of 236 photos and some videos that I’m currently working on.

Thanks again, see you at a show

The Best of 2011 Photo Book is available

The Best of 2011 photo book is now available!

Follow along as I travel to over 35 events over 10,000 miles, shooting over 14,000 images to bring the best of the midwest hot rods and customs to my site, royboyproductions.com
From the Lonestar Roundup and Hot Rod Revolution shows in Austin, TX to the Hunnert Car Pileup in Decatur, IL with ton of stops in between, there are cars, trucks, dragsters from the midwest and both coasts represented throughout this book.
So come along on a fantastic year with me and have a look at the Best of 2011.

Royboy goes to the Hot Rod Revolution Part 4-11

not much to say this time, the cars say more than I ever could

As one would expect in Austin, the music was fantastic. I didn’t get shots of all of the bands but I did venture over and get some of my buddies in Pushrod who started the day off music wise. I can’t imagine playing in those temps, my fingers wouldn’t want to work

Baaaaaaaaaaaaad, glad I’m not driving it, I don’t have the cajones to stand on it as I straddle the rear end sitting between the slicks. Yes I’m a wuss.

Absolutely love McPhail’s Buick

Who couldn’t love Roy Drapal’s awesome rod. Amazing story of the build, if you get the chance to see the car in person ask a bunch of questions, this is the real deal folks.

Still lots more to come!

Then I ventured over into the parking lot for a peek at what people drove to get to the show.

Still in the parking lot…

I didn’t get one but there was no need for a cooler…

The Paladins took the stage mid afternoon, played a great set and convinced me that I needed to see them again that night at the Continental Club.

Here’s Roy and his trophy. Such a kool story of a homebuilt hot rod from the late 40’s early 50’s built with no electricity and a ton of ingenuity!

Here you can see the reflection of my new hoodie as I take a pic of Myers taking a pic..

So then I went and stood at the gate so I can try to capture some “action” shots of the rides leaving.

NotStockPhotography and his lovely wife leaving the shindig. Damn that van is cool folks.

Mr. Vaughan and crew…. couldn’t believe a F1 dropped front axle would fit in the trunk…

Best photo I’ve ever taken…

So then I took Myers’ advice and went to Chuy’s for dinner… Big As Yo Face Burrito was awesome!

Then it was off to the Brian Setzer Rockabilly Riot

And finally back to the Continental Club for the Paladins again!

Then it was time to head home again…

Parts 1-3 | Parts 4-11

Thanks to everyone involved in putting on this killer weekend. The show was great, the bands were awesome and I had an amazing time hanging out with everyone.

This coming weekend is my Mid Decembrrrr Run my last event of the year, 35 events, over 10,000 miles and over 14,000 total pictures. It’s been a great run so far, see you at a show.

Travis

Royboy goes to the Hot Rod Revolution part 1-3

Wow! That’s the basis of my review of my weekend in Austin. Fantastic cars, killer music and most importantly some of the koolest people anywhere made this one of my best weekends all year.

Parts 1-3 | Parts 4-11

I’ve started using Instagram on my iPhone and this trip I experimented with documenting the trip with that app. So along the way I was snapping shots from my iPhone which was mounted to the dash of my car.

I left home (Central KS) Thursday evening, determined to make it past the dreaded Fort Worth traffic so Friday’s drive would be short and fun.

Finally around 2am I found a hotel on the south side of Ft. Worth and decided to crash out for a few hours.

Friday was a nice short drive of a little over 2 hours.

I rolled into town on Friday and promptly took a nap in my hotel room…party animal. But later on I went over to Austin Speed Shop for their pre-party and for the the screening of Brian Darwas’ film “A Sweet Sickness: The Flathead Movie” Arriving fashionably almost late the place was packed.

NotStockPhotography was there with his wife and their kool Corvair Van.

Tons of killer rides in the parking lot, tons of great people milling about.

Okay so I got a little artsy fartsy with a couple of shots…

Then I met up with the crew from Pushrod and we set out for the Continental Club to catch Dave Alvin on stage. Wow! that was a great show. I highly recommend if he’s coming to your town you need to be in the audience. I was blown away by the whole performance.

That’s it for Friday, I’m heading off to the day job for now but I’ll post more when I come home for lunch. Click on any of the photos to see the whole gallery, there are about 200 that are currently uploading so they won’t be available for an hour or two.

Here’s a couple cell phone pics from the end of our Friday night watching Dave Alvin at the Continental Club.

I may or may not have been drinking and take no responsibility for slightly out of focus phone shots…

So Saturday morning I roll over to Camp Mabry, it was the first time that I ever was carded to get into a car show, a new experience but to be allowed to have the show on the base was very cool indeed.

The backdrop wasn’t as cool as the power plant last year but that was almost a once in a lifetime type background for a show. There were plenty of interesting sites to look at, I didn’t get to go checkout the museum and I regret that now.

The temps were decent but the wind was not, after braving the cold most of the day I finally broke down and bought a Austin Speed Shop hoodie, yes I’m a wimp.

Remember to click on any of the images to see the whole gallery.

Thanks for taking a look everyone, I hope I can make it feel like you were there in some small way.

Looking Back: 2011 Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show Wichita, KS

Just have a few minutes here but I hopefully will be doing this weekly. Today we’re looking back at one of the shows from earlier this year.

The first show of the year for me each year is the Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show held at Century II in Wichita, KS. Here’s a bit I wrote about the show in the gallery:
“In the dead of winter each January it’s a pleasure every year to get together with my hotrod and kustom family and spend some time inside WITH a bunch of cool cars. The Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom show in Wichita, KS typically pulls about 400 cars max for a 3 day indoor show. As the name implies rods and customs show in abundance, but so do stock restorations, survivors, 4×4’s, lowriders, rat rods, and various types of racers.

A couple of very cool front engine dragsters were on display this year, as were some very nice traditional built hot rods. Traditional built rods are not rats, and this show had both build styles represented nicely. The car count and the vendor count both seemed down this year, but that was a blessing instead of a hinderance. Less cars means more room to get around the cars, and it seemed that the cars that didn’t show were the ones that I normally don’t shoot anyhow, so the show’s overall quality went up as a result.

The Marauders and Fundamentals had great club displays with the Marauders taking home the prize for best display for their “model” car display complete with giant exacto knives and Testor paint bottles to complete the look. The Fundamentals went with a beach theme and rumor has it some Marauders may have been involved with an incident involving Baby Ruth candy bars being dropped in the Fundamentals “sand” (kitty litter). I’m not going to say where the story came from or how hard the person who told it to me was laughing when he told how they did it.

Another fun show from Darryl Starbird in Wichita!”

On a cool note, this show will be changing next  year, Tim Devlin and others have purchased the show and will continue it and will be donating proceeds from the show back to Wichita area charities, too cool! Go to http://www.starbirddevlin.com/ for more info on the show in the future.

Here’ some shots from the show.

2012 Calendar for Charity!!!

Hey folks, once again I’ve scoured the thousands of car show coverage photos that I took this year to create some calendars to raise money for some great charities. I shoot the shots at the shows that I travel to across the midwest and beyond, I also do the layout, print them, bind them and ship them myself. As you can see, they are a bit different from your standard calendars and well worth the $15 if I do say so myself!

The Traditionals Edition will go to benefit Victory Junction Gang Camp for Kids, VJ is a summer camp for terminally ill children. Kyle and Patty Petty of NASCAR started the camp in memory of their son, racer Adam Petty as it was his dream to create a camp like this for kids that normally wouldn’t get the camp experience. With a fully functional hospital on site this is a truly unique experience for the campers.

To order just go to royboyproductions.com

The Trucks edition will go to the same charity, here’s some samples of it

There’s also an edition made from shots taken at Vintage Torque Fest that benefit Helping Hannah’s Heart. A great cause, a great show and a damn good time, so check the show out in 2012!

Shots from the Stray Kat 500 and the Starliner shows went into the Stray Kat Kustoms edition, proceeds from this one will go to the Red Cross. Stray Kat Kustoms shows are the most laid back shows you’ll ever run across, when you attend a Stray Kat show you are family. I love these shows and I’m proud to be able to cover them each year.

And finally the fantastic Greaserama show shots were combed for the Greaserama edition! This is one of the most fun shows anywhere, hang out all day in the drive in and once the sun goes down, watch kool movies! Labor Day weekend you’ll always find me at the Greaserama!
[[url=https://www.royboyproductions.com]

Thanks for taking the time to check out my post, please buy a calendar or 12 as the proceeds all go to help great causes and some truly wonderful people. Just go to www.royboyproductions.com to find the paypal button to order them.

See you at a show,
Travis

Royboy’s coverage of the 2011 Hunnert Car PIleup Part 14-15

Part 14!

So I realized last night right after my post that there were about 80 or so pics that had not made it to the site yet. Those are in the process of uploading now, along with some fairly mediocre videos that I tried to shoot. I’ll share some of that with everyone later today.

Part 15! The lost pics! For some reason the videos won’t upload but here’s the shots that I found that had not made it to the site previously! Really dig the wires! Part 16 up next!

Part 12! We’re in the show finally!!!

Ryno’s 61 Unibody

Part 13

Beautiful…just frickin awesome!

Ran into a bunch of artistic type folks at this show, Nick Sinclair, B. Scott, Max Grundy, Ed Tillrock, Todd Jones, Weesner…and many more, too kool to see so much talent all in one show. Sorry if I forgot anyone, I’m old and senile now.

That’s it for this post, I’ve reached the 20 image limit, there’s still more to come, I sure didn’t shoot enough in the show but with so many people around it was just much easier to shoot in the staging lanes than it was in the actual show. Stay tuned!

Okay, Part 9! We’re still outside the gate now watching the cars roll through inspection at this point, also about here is where I realize that I forgot my hat and I am out of sunscreen…ooops that smell is probably my irish skin melting… This combo was just too kool, I had to keep catching shots of it.

Part 10, and we still arent even into the show yet!

3 different 54 Fords with the glass top at the Hunnert, too kool

Awesome color!

Love, love, love this flamed Merc!

Part 11!

Another great color!

Bob K is never going to pass inspection in that!

Nice 60!

Loved this ride, and I fully admit I’m not sure what it is. Plymouth business coupe maybe?

Kleeeeean…..

That’s it for outside the show! Next post we move inside for the 10th and Final Hunnert Car Pileup!

See you at a show,
