48 Cars In 48 States #04 : Arkansas

48Cars48States4; Don; Searls; 014; HDR

After leaving MS I headed up into Memphis, I wanted to swing by Graceland and take a touristy photo of my Galaxie in front of the gate, but the line was way too long and I had a shoot in AR to get to!

Don Searls lives in Conway, AR which also happens to be the home of my buddy Dr Dave (Myers). So it was a great excuse to stop by and see the Myers family. More on them in a bit!

Don has had his Model A sedan for 10 years and has been driving it since it was roadworthy, 6 months after starting the project. He’s an inspector for NSRA and helps put on some cruise nights after being the President of a car club for awhile. I had a blast riding around with Don and shooting some photos.

After we finished shooting I caught up with Dr. Dave and family. They treated me to a dinner even though I showed up very late, then Dave and I stayed up far too late talking car shows, kustoms and all things in between, also spending some time out in his shop checking out his cars and parts collection. The next morning I stopped by his office and wow… just wow! Great job by everyone involved in putting that place together, makes me want to drive all the way back to AR just to get my teeth worked on.

48 Cars in 48 States #03 : Mississippi

Day 4 of the #48Cars48States trip I started on the south side of Nashville in Franklin, TN and right after the rain started I shot southwest to Walls, MS. Walls is just south of Memphis, and the shoot was just barely into MS, but barely counts!

I was lucky enough to meet up with Ricky Neals and his son Mike Neals. They have a bunch of great rides at their shop and some were just shot for some magazine features so be on the lookout for those photos by Trent Sherrill in Traditional Rod & Kulture.

Micheal’s truck was my subject for MS, he’s had it since he was 12, it was finished when he was 13 and it’s been running down the road for 17 years since! It’s served as his daily for a number of years and now it gets reserved for the more fun trips and outings.  Scroll down for some shots of their awesome shop and then later down the page for shots of the truck. Of course more info on the truck will come in the book!

From Walls, MS I headed to Conway, AR but more on that tomorrow!

48 Cars In 48 States #02 : Kentucky

There’s not a ton to share from today’s travels so I apologize for the short post. Day 3 I awoke in Lexington, KY and made my way over to the beautiful Paris, KY to meet up with Lee Ingram and his 36 Ford. We found a couple of cool spots that he’d scoped out and shot some photos before going to grab some breakfast and sitting down to record a bit for the podcast.

Map 1 (if it doesn’t appear below, click here)

Afterwards I traveled south to Mount Vernon, KY, my second Mount Vernon of the trip oddly enough, anyway I jumped off of the interstate and took some beautiful roads back towards Hartsville, TN to stop in at Mike Howell’s Volunteer Auto Body shop. Mike was a guest back on episode 153 of Chrome Pipes and Pinstripes. Mike was the man who painted Ryno’s Golden Goddess and Bob Owens’ Buick both featured in this month’s 2018 Royboy Kustom Calendar Selection post.

After checking the weather I consulted with my TN car owner and we decided to postpone the shoot until later in my trip. A roadster in a forecasted thunderstorm doesn’t sound like the best idea. No worries, I had already booked an extra shoot for this week and I have days built into the schedule in order to make up for weather problems.

Map 2 (if it doesn’t appear below, click here)

Enjoy the photos and I hope to have more for you tomorrow!

48 Cars in 48 States State #01 : Indiana

Day 1 of the 48 Cars 48 States trip I got to visit my friends of the Los Punk Rods club at the Greaserama in Tracy, MO. If you want to see the coverage from that event, click here. After the Greaserama visit I hopped in the Galaxie and pointed it east on I-70 through Missouri, across the Mississippi River at St. Louis and then over to Mount Vernon, IL.

Map 1

The drive through Missouri on 70 is not exactly the most exciting country side, and that’s coming from a guy who lives in central KS, so you know I was bored. One fuel stop along the way had me scratching my head a little, is it possible that the car was getting 18mpg? I had to enter those numbers wrong when I typed them into my phone. Oh well, keep rolling, there’s 3 more hours to go.

I called up my friend Jimmy Hervatin to see if I could stop by his place in Warrenton, MO to check out his shop and a couple of projects that he’s working on, unfortunately for me he was a few hours away and wouldn’t make it until later in the evening so I had to press on. Coming through Central MO I felt the anxiety in me well up as I passed the place that the Galaxie broke down on the way from the Custom Car Revival back home. A smile slowly crept over my face as I pushed passed that spot, then later the spot of the initial breakdown in St. Louis. Whew I made it across that river and across that state!

Another 75 or so miles and I was at my stopping point for the night. A hotel, fill up with fuel (17.7 mpg this time), unload the car into a hotel room, set up the computer & let it start working on my photos from the Greaserama then head up the street for a bite to eat. Back to the hotel to edit photos, build all 4 days of the Greaserama coverage then finally around midnight I could call it a day. Sunday was supposed to be about a 4 hour drive over to IN for the first shoot so I was going to sleep in a little bit.

Map 2

Day 2 of the 48 Cars 48 States trip had me traveling across lower Illinois and Indiana to the town of Deputy to visit my buddy Mikey Brown of Mikey’s Kustom Upholstery. I met Mikey back in Indianapolis, IN during the 2017 Custom Car Revival and had him on a guest of the podcast on episode 160 of Chrome Pipes and Pinstripes. You can go listen to that episode to hear a whole bunch more about Mikey, his shop, his truck and dragster.  Enjoy the photos!

48 Cars in 48 States : Pre-trip #006 Wait… No Camper?!?

You read that title right. As of the writing of this post (1am Monday morning), the camper will not be making the 48 Cars 48 States trip. I’ll tell you why, but please don’t think of this as me soliticing advice. I have neither the time nor the money to try to get this fixed this week, so I appreciate all of the advice but I still have 50 hours of work at the desk to put in this week and packing, planning etc.

So why no camper? The car with it’s new 1400 mile engine seems to be running better than it ever has before, everything is GOOD, right up until I hook the camper up. Then the car that’s pulled the camper 3,000 miles already this year and never overheated… gets hot. REALLY hot, in about 5 miles it shoots up from 185 to 230. Unhook the trailer and drive the car and it settles back down around 180, right where the thermostat is. Before you ask, there’s a temp gauge in the dash that’s after the thermostat and one in the Fitech that’s before and both agree on temps, it’s not a stuck thermostat. Also the car cools down from super high temps if you drive it with no trailer so I know the cooling system is working. The timing is my next suspect, since the balancer has slipped I can’t get a proper read on the timing. I’m looking for options to get a new one and get it on the car somehow this week so that I can re-check the timing and then try another test pull with the camper.

So below is the new schedule. I’m going to have to rely on friends who’ve offered up couches, a bunch of hotels, and maybe crash a night or two in the car in a rest area to make it all work but the event is still on! I will leave Saturday morning Sept. 2nd and I’ll head east!

After a few less than perfect attempts I think I finally have the schedule for the 48 Cars In 48 States trip worked out. There are a few states that have their spots already spoken for but I’m still hoping to add in shop visits when and where I can. The general schedule has me stopping in a different state each day with a run of a few days in a row then an extra day to hopefully account for bad weather or other unforeseen issues.

48 Cars 48 States on Roadtrippers

******* This trip is the updated list, it wil not match what is said during the podcast ******

In planning the trip I’ve taken into account a few shows that I must make that happen within the two months, including starting from the Greaserama in KC, a stop a week later back in Wichita for the Stray Kat Kustoms Starliner, then a couple of days in Central City, CO for the Hot Rod Hill Climb, a day in Woodstock, IL for the Iron Invasion, and finally a 2 day stint back in Kansas for the Blues Masters At The Crossroads at the end of October. Then a week after the trip ends I’ll head out to Texas for Pistons & Paint. It’s going to be a busy fall!

Unfortunately I can’t do all of the shoots on the weekends, so I’m planning on doing as many as possible in the evenings but some will have to be in the mornings. If you know of anyone with a great traditionally inspired hot rod or kustom in the states that I don’t have filled in yet, please feel free to contact me here and get me in touch with them. *these dates have changed slightly since I recorded the audio*

Sept. 2 – The trip starts out September 2nd with me making the short drive over to Tracy, MO for the Greaserama. This show has been a staple of my Labor Day weekend for longer than I can really remember, even before my Galaxie was ready to make the trip there and back. The Greaserama information can be found at www.greaserama.com

Sept. 3 – I’ll roll out of there later in the afternoon and start making may way east, the first leg of the trip will take me out through the center portion of the eastern half of the United States. My next stop will be in Deputy, IN to see Mikey Brown of Mikey Brown’s Kustom Upholstery, he was a guest on Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes recently & I’ll be shooting his sweet kustom Ford Pickup.

Sept. 4 – Kentucky, I have a car lined up

Sept. 5 – Then it’s Tennessee, I have a car lined up, I hope to stop by and see Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes guests Mike Howell & Ricky Bobby and maybe even stop in to see Jason & Tasha Graham. @70 miles

Sept. 6 – Walls, MS & Conway, AR, I have  cars lined up

Sept. 7 – The following day is an “extra day” in my schedule, pretty creative name huh? If all goes to plan I’ll be making my way west towards Kansas, hopefully making it to Ryno Built Rod & Kustom near Joplin, MO that night. Ryno and family are always awesome hosts when I’m in the area and he’s doing a bunch of work on the Galaxie between now and the trip.

Sept. 8/9 – Then it’s off to Wichita, KS for the Stray Kat Kustoms Starliner show. The Starliner show is one of my favorite weekends of the year each year. The atmosphere at the host hotel is awesome, the Garage Crawl is fantastic and the show itself, set in the Kansas Aviation Museum is visually amazing. After the show Saturday I’ll head north to try to take some of the next day’s drive off of Sunday.

Sept. 10/11 – The next stop on my trip is Mount Rushmore in western South Dakota, I have a car that’s fairly local to the monument lined up for the SD shoot so we will likely pick some scenic spot near the monument for the shoot.

Sept. 12 – North Dakota, I have a car lined up

Sept 13 – Montana, I have a car lined up

Sept. 14 – Wyoming, I have a car lined up

Sept. 15/16 – I’ll kill two birds with one stone and shoot the Colorado car as part of the Hot Rod Hill Climb weekend.

Sept 17 – Head to Utah, I have a few choices here and the car will likely have the last name Elmer on the title, the smart thing for me to do will be to follow them from Central City back to Utah

Sept. 18 – Idaho, I have a car lined up

Sept. 19 – Washington, I’ll meet up with Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes guest and one of the folks behind Hop Up Magazine

48 Cars In 48 States : Pre-Trip #004 Irene The Camper Makes Her First Trip!

APC; 0431; hdr

I’m a bit tardy on this update on the camper, but only because I was so busy working on it that I couldn’t take the time to sit and write this up! Since the last update I’ve gotten the camper on the road again and made my first road trip with it. 1400 miles rolled under her since leaving the garage a couple of weeks ago and there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Driver’s side wall removed.

Time for an update on the restoration of my camper Irene. When this whole thing started I thought I’d purchased a fairly solid old camper, I had no idea how deep the rotted wood went. That’s pretty much the case with most campers that have wood rot. As of the writing of this post there are only two panels left to replace then I can seal the wood, wrap it in insulation and then reinstall all of the exterior tin.

A few months ago I announced to the world that I was going to do something big and awesome in 2017. The plan is simple, I’m going to hop in the Galaxie, with the canned ham camper on the back and I’m going to hit all lower 48 states in one monster road trip of a life time.

This weekend I finally got to tear in to the camper to fix some of the rotted wood. Most old campers have some rotted wood, this one had more than I bargained for…

For those that don’t listen to my Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes Podcast, well first of all why the hell don’t you? Each week I have guests on to tell stories and talk about the cool stuff that goes on in the rod and kustom world. Anyways, for those that don’t listen you may wonder what the whole 48 Cars in 48 States thing is. Or maybe you don’t know about it at all. Either way, this post is for you. I’m going to lay out the basic plan of an idea that has been rolling around in my brain for a few years. An idea that will take shape over the next 10 or so months leading up to the biggest adventure of my life.
