After driving the 440 miles to Colorado Springs I met up with the pre-party at The Muffler Shop/The Body & Fender Shop. We had some food, told some stories and then it was time to move the party to the host hotel parking lot. A few folks wanted to go cruising, I was lucky enough to hop in with Joel Davis in his 40 Ford (as you saw in the first post). We found a pizza joint up the street from the hotel and chowed down. 5:30 am came awful early, soooooo I was late. Lonely Knights were parked at 7am and the gates opened at 8, closing at 10. I liked the idea of having all of the cars in the show early so there’s less driving around during the event. More to come tomorrow.

2015 was the first time I went to the King Pin Carmageddon and I vowed that I would come back. So this weekend I hopped in the Galaxie and drove 440 miles up to Colorado Springs to hang out with my brothers and sisters in the Lonely Knights for the show.

Back in 2010 I made my first trip to the H.A.M.B. Drags held at MoKan Dragway outside of Joplin, MO. Since then I’ve been back each year. Some years it’s been well over 100 degrees and miserable, this year it was 85 and great, but every year that I’ve gone the event has brought about 200 cars to the track.

Saturday morning of the 2016 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular the park filled up fast! This year seemed to have more of the appropriate kustoms that the show was founded on than in years past. With a live band, free food, beer, tons of people and cars this is always a good time. With the typical temps of the last 7 or so years being well above 100 degrees many were surprised to see the forecast in the upper 80’s. That doesn’t mean that we didn’t get a curve ball thrown at us. Thursday evening just before the parade a heavy rain came through town, it sent many to the hotels in search of cover. 2016 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular

As I type this it’s midnight on Sunday after the 2016 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, KS. The Kustom Kemps Of America has been doing the Leadsled Spectacular show for 36 years with the last 10 or so being held here in Salina. The show has grown year after year despite high temps and less than pleasant humidity.

Throughout Saturday at the 2016 Meltdown Drags Todd and I went from the pits to the swap meet to the car show and back to the track for more racing action. The 2016 Meltdown Drags had so much going on that I quite frankly missed a bit of it. There were cars that I never saw on the track, sooooo sorry I didn’t get action shots of them. As we walked through the pits of the 2016 Meltdown Drags it was a seemingly never ending supply amazing drag machines. In it’s 7th year the Meltdown Drags they have grown from about 40 cars to over 600, with an estimated 400 in the car show area. One of my favorite parts of the event is checking out the names of the cars.

After driving up to Iowa for the 4th time this year I finally made it to my buddy Todd’s place around 10pm. His family had the couch ready to go for me so after a few hours of sleep we headed out at 6am for Byron, IL. We took some great 2 lane back roads and got to the track in time to make a lap through the pits before the driver’s meeting.

2016 Meltdown Drags

Here’s the story of my trip to the 2016 Meltdown Drags. Last year was my first trip to the Meltdown Drags, it was a trip I couldn’t have afforded to go on until Speedway Motors stepped up to sponsor my coverage. This year they again made it possible for me to make the trip to Byron Dragway for the 7th Annual Meltdown Drags. This is one of the best events in the country, there’s really not much more that needs to be said. The event had somewhere north of 600 cars this year, all 66 and older, and man o man were there some great rides! From the minute that we walked into the event it was nothing but “hey look at that” and “oh man check that out,” Todd Jones and I were like kids in the toy store the week before Christmas.

The Automobilia show is this weekend and honestly it’s not my favorite show. I go more to hang out with the people than see the show, it’s always too hot and too many looky-lou non car people.

2016 GoodGuys Heartland Nationals

For the final post from the 2016 Goodguys Heartland Nationals I’ll share some shots from the Duel In Des Moines Autocross action and some more shots as I continued to walk the fairgrounds. I ran out of time and didn’t get to see the over 4,000 cars in attendance but I gave it a good effort. This is my favorite GG show, if you have never been, I highly recommend it.
