We had some rain and storms in the area early Saturday morning so my buddy Clifton and I decided to let things dry out a little before heading over to Grand Prairie to Yellow Belly Dragstrip.  This allowed us to meet up at our favorite local burger joint, Del’s Charcoal Burgers in Richardson, Texas.  My 7-year old son also decided he wanted to go with me to the drag races.  As we enjoyed some awesome food at Del’s we had tons of people taking pictures of Clifton’s 1931 Chevrolet Tudor and my 1953 Chevrolet 3100 pickup.  We got asked the familiar old questions of “Is there an old car show around here?” or “What year is it? I used to have one just like that…..”

Saturday morning we headed from Limon up to Loveland, CO for the Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson Hot Rods & Hawgs show. The weather app on my phone said to expect upper 50’s and clouds… it was a bit of a liar. The low hanging clouds drizzled and flat out rained on us off and on through the middle of the day and the temperature felt like it never got above about 50. I really wished I’d had a coat with me but then I saw the pinup girls. If those ladies can brave those temps, I could too :). I was asked to be a judge for the pinup contest, well sure! We had some great music from a couple of fun bands, saw a ton of pretty ladies in the pinup contest, lots of great cars and bikes and the best part, we got to hang with a bunch of great friends. I hope to come back next year and hope for better weather!

A few months ago I was hanging out with my buddy Dan Dolan, owner of Freakshow Tattoo, Covenant Tattoo & Rock Steady Tattoo from Fort Collins, CO and he told me about the Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson Hot Rods & Hawgs show. So since I’ve been pushing to hit new events this year I put this one on my schedule.

Rolling out Friday evening after work we put down about 5 hours of driving and got most of the way up I-70 before crashing for the night. If you’ve never driven this stretch of road… it’s quite possibly the most boring drive on the planet. It was all worth it though, enjoy the photos and I’ll post some more tomorrow.

For the final post of my 2016 Stray Kat 500 coverage we’ve moved to Sunday morning. A quick rain shower moved through right as I was showing up to the show. That seemed to push away a good majority of the crowd but we still had a good time. Right as we were about to do the awards another storm was rolling in. The decision was made to postpone them for an hour to let it pass, 15 minutes later we decided to just do a quick roll through awards after a lot of people had packed up and split. The last couple of cars through the line were handed wet awards but we got it all done. I had a great time at the 500 as I always do and it always feels like the last day of summer camp did as a kid to leave there. I hope you enjoyed the photos!

Over the years the Stray Kat 500 has had all sorts of weather, this year it could only be described as perfect. Okay from the photography stand point it could have been better but other than that it was amazing. The small town atmosphere of Dewey was perfect for a show that happened on Mother’s Day weekend. For those that brought the mom in their lives Dewey had them covered with great antique stores. I finally went into the Linger Longer store and had a chocolate shake from their soda fountain, that will be on my to do list next year… and any time I roll through Dewey on the way to Tulsa!

If you’ve been following along all week you’d have a pretty good idea of what I think of the Stray Kat 500, it’s one of the best shows that I hit each year. It was great to see so many new folks come to the show this year. All week I’ve seen social media posts from some of these folks extolling the virtues of the show, our little “secret” is getting out! Since I missed the Reliability Run for this year’s Stray Kat 500 and was late getting to the free feed it felt like a different show to me. I’m glad I was able to get into the flow with all of my Stray Kat Kustoms family and the show felt like home. That’s one of the things about this event that is always the best for me, it’s home. Sure there are 600 or so cars, most of them pretty dang cool, sure there are bands, pinstripers and pinup girls but what’s most important is the Stray Kat Kustoms Family.

The Stray Kat 500 is almost old enough to drive, 15 years folks have been gathering in Dewey, OK and every year it seems more and more show up. Some fear losing the intimacy of the show, but so far it’s been a great example of scaling a show up without losing the magic of the event. This year there were some new additions, the bands that used to be outside in the park have been inside for a couple of years, as well as the Miss Kitty Pinup contest and the Inspiration awards, but more on those in later posts. I missed most of Friday at the show this year.

Welcome to part 6 of my Vintage Torque Fest coverage! As you can see in the photos it had started to rain by this point in the morning. While the threat of rain had been in the forecast all week long, the percentages just kept climbing with each day that passed. Yesterday I showed you some of the chain racing carnage, that was so much fun. If you don’t know what it is, two cars are tied together with cables, the front car has the engine, but no brakes. The rear car has brakes but no engine, and as you could see yesterday the driver of the rear car couldn’t see much just a couple of laps in to the race. Today I have some shots of the flame show that went on afterwards. It was a great way to warm up on a chilly night. After that you’ll see some of the shots from Saturday before it started raining.

In this 4th post of the Vintage Torque Fest coverage we continue through the parking lot on Friday evening and then venture into the 2 buildings. Lots of great cars outside and inside. I was beat but someone suggested that I stay around for the chain racing out on the dirt track. It was cold, I wasn’t dressed for it but hey, I’ve never seen it before. What the hell, I’ll stay. In the couple of years since I was able to attend Vintage Torque Fest the show has changed venue. That makes 3 pretty dang cool county fairgrounds that the show has been held at, I’m honestly not sure that we have such cool fairgrounds here in Kansas. John Wells and company put on one jam packed weekend full of fun. In addition to the car show area that you see in these photos, there’s a huge swap meet area, a parking area for cars that don’t fit the criteria of the show, 2 stages for live music and pinups, an indoor show area full of killer cars and artists and the dirt track!

After a rainy start to my 575 mile drive, I got to Dubuque around 4pm. About 30 seconds after getting out of the car I went back and got a hoodie, 42 degrees and a light wind… not what I was hoping for. The skies were dark but the rain wasn’t there yet. I walked the show and shot as many photos as I could on Friday because I was concerned about the forecast for Saturday. There were still a lot of great cars and more importantly great people at Vintage Torque Fest. More from Friday tomorrow!

It’s been a few years since I could attend Vintage Torque Fest. The first and second years of the show I was there and had a great time, then the dates didn’t line up and I had to watch from afar but that changed in 2016. The weather forecast didn’t look fantastic and when it came time to roll out in the Galaxie, she let me down for the first time. So a quick phone call later I had arranged to borrow a daily driver to make the trip. 8 hours later I was in Dubuque, IA and it was time to enjoy the 2016 Vintage Torque Fest photo coverage!

Saturday at the 2016 Lonestar Round Up was probably the biggest day I’ve ever seen at the show. Even with a few rain showers coming through the area from time to time all day, the crowd seemed strong and the cars were into parts of the grounds that I’ve never seen cars in before.

One of the many great things about the Lonestar Round Up is that cars come from across the country and even from other countries to attend. You get to see some of the best kustoms and hot rods from everywhere. There have been more and more off topic cars, which is troubling. Overall the quality of the cars is still good even with the off topic rides. Let me make it clear, I don’t care what you drive but when a show’s guidelines specifically say for traditionally inspired hot rods and kustoms I’ll never understand why people bring cars that do not fit that description. As a wise man once said you wouldn’t take a Corvair to a Corvette show.

So far the 2016 Lonestar Round Up trip has been a ton of fun. After work on Wednesday I hopped in the Galaxie and headed south. I stopped in Maize, KS and picked up a 34 Ford radiator that I’m delivering to someone at the Round Up and then pointed the Galaxie south again and hammered down. By 1:15 Thursday morning I got to my hotel and sacked out for a few hours. Starting the Thursday drive south of the traffic in the Dallas Fort Worth area is a huge boost to getting the day started right. After a stop at Magnolia Market in Waco to pick up some shirts and stuff I made it down to the Meatheads CC Pre Lonestar Round Up. Let me tell you about this BBQ, amazing food, great live music tons of cool cars and people… okay that was much easier to explain than I thought when I started the sentence.
