Ā It’s original styling on the inside with a stock dash with slight modifications to adapt for a/c. Ā There are no body mods. Ā Custom seat, engine and transmission are small block 350 with 700-R4, both were acquired from the Ol’ Marias car show in Ottawa, KS. Ā With the help of my dad and friends, I bought the truck around my 15th birthday for $800 and began building it from the ground up my sophomore year of high school. Ā It was up and running by my 16th birthday and I drove it to school my junior year, weather permitting of course. It’s been driven frequently since it’s completion, the last venture we drove was for my senior trip. Ā We traveled all of Route 66 to Ā Chicago and back from our home in Broken Arrow, OK. Jeff Redenbaugh – Age 31 – 1962 Mercury Comet Station Wagonjeff 1 jeff 2

Tony Moore – Age 27 – 1960 coupe deville, lower half original factory paint, upper flaked out roof with the lace pattern of my grandmother’s actual table cloth.15″ Supremes with one off 2 3/8″ whitewalls. Redone interior with inserts and stitch pattern inspired by 59 impala. painted and pinstriped tins on the original 390 motor. Tony1 Tony2

Jamie Han – Age 24 – It’s just a pure, simple garage built gasser ranchero. I funded it threw trading labor and selling a pair if model t’s. The 65 has a warm 302 t ram covered with a pair of original m/t valve covers that I literally dug out of the trash at a friends shop and the polished them back to a fine sheen. All the spent fumes arethrew a set of fenderwell header that I handcrafted, the collector house a pair of mufflers to hush the roar without the need of full exhaust. The power is sent through a c4 into a narrowed (by yours truly) 8.8 ford rear that houses a Trac loc with a 3.73 cog and a set of halibrand big windows wrapped in so Mickey thompson street rubber. The interior is bare only a mustang bench shifter, a mid sixties dixco tach Ā and a true vintage gold superior wheel. That’s my street freak in a nut shell Ā thanks for the opportunity Travis and sponsorsJamie Jamie2

Jason Mayginnes – Age 34 – 1929 Model A Ford Tudor that I’ve been working on. Dropped / reverse eye spring, still plan on dropping the rear some more, striped, A banger powered (just to be different), ’35 Ford 16″ wires with 6.00 and 7.00 bias plies. DP90 black with antique white, gold, and bronze striping. She’s a little different with her original roof height and full fendered with some original accessories added to the mix. Don’t forget the original spotlight mirror also.jason1 jason2

Timm McKenny – Age 31 – A keeper. We found our 46 ford along side the road on a road trip together, the Salina show was actualy part of that trip as a surprise detour, and we had to have it. A 46 has been on my dream list for over a decade and Sarah said we could get it as long as this one was a keeper. A car that ended up in our engagement photos as it arrived to my friends tin shed, and after we both out in hundreds and hundreds Ā of hours on the car together it was our wedding vehicle. Later on it helped move us 300 miles south for a new adventure moving to Kansas City.

A continual work in progress it will be in the photos of our first house, taking our kids home from the hospital, to there proms and any other big event in the story we are writing. The KKOA show is our only don’t miss it show and after three years of almost making it with the ford this year Sarah tells me the car will be there even if she has to push it! A moonshine style car that can take us on long road trips is what we are trying to accomplish, and after some disastrous paint troubles we just painted it a second time just in time to look cool at the hottest show in the country. timm1 Timm2

I am heartbroken to to relay the news to you that one of our New Blood Award contestants has tragically passed away. Jon Wright was a friend and a good man. We will miss him terribly. Another contestant, Jamie Han has informed me that he is leaving his ride at home and plans on bringing Jon’s Thunderbird to the KKOA because Jon wanted to make it there so badly.

What do I do about Saturdays?

When I first started to take this blog to a daily thing, I included the weekends. Later I scaled back to try to give myself a little breathing room, on top of the 50+ hours a week at the day job, a 7 day a week blog was just too much at the time. Later Saturdays became a place to do a rundown of all of the posts of that week, let’s face it, you can get the same info just going to the homepage of the site.

So I find myself wondering what do I do with Saturdays and Sundays? What would you like to see here on Saturdays? My current thought is to resurrect the “2 Month Warning” and “1 Month Warning” posts as a combined post on Saturdays to let you know what shows are coming up. As a week day blog post they never got many views but maybe as a combined post on Saturdays they might be more useful to you.

To that end:

3 Months Out:

August 30th & 31st Greaserama, Tracy, MO 2013 Greaserama Coverage | 2012 Greaserama Coverage

September 5th & 6th Starliner, Wichita, KS 2013 Starliner Coverage | 2012 Starliner Coverage

2 Months Out:

August 1st & 2nd Krome N Kandy, Hudson, WI

July 24-27 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular Salina, KS 2013 KKOA Coverage | 2012 KKOA Coverage

1 Month Out:

July 4-6 Goodguys Des Moines, IA

I’ve been playing with some photos from past shows, what I give you each week is the down and dirty coverage of the shows that I attend. Truth is I want to give you more of this type of stuff as well. Remember I can do a kustom photo shoot of your vehicle and give you similar results.

See you at a show,

Royboy

PS: All photos on this page are available as prints up to poster sizes. Buying them not only makes your walls cooler it puts gas in the tank to get me to another car show or feature shoot. Please consider buying a print, if you canā€™t do that, I understand. IF you like this post, share it with your car friends using the social media sharing buttons below or just by sending them the link to this page. Every set of eyeballs on the site helps!

New Blood Award Entry Form

ENTRY IS NOW CLOSED!!!!

VOTING IS NOWĀ CLOSEDĀ FOR THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE!!!!

As I mentioned on the New Blood Award announcement, in order to be eligible for one of the 2 $500 cash prizes you need to enter here on royboyproductions.com and here is how to do that!

If you and your ride meet the criteria (under 35 years old and bringing a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or gasser that has never been to the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular before), fill in this form. I will email you so that you can then send me a photo of your ride. If you are getting this via email and not seeing the entry form just below, click here to go to the post on the site and enter.

So there you have it, simple really. You fill out that simple form, I get that info in an email, I (sometime in the following 24 hours) send you an email and we go from there.

As mentioned in the New Blood Award announcement, the awards will be decided by 1 of 2 means.

1.) A people’s choice award, voted on by the viewers of this website.

2.) Royboy Pick, I pick a car that I like.

The prizes will be given away at a party on the Saturday night (July 25, 2014) of the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. The party will be held at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS. You will need to be there to win, just like your car will need to be at the show to win.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me here and I will do my best to de-confuse you :).

This contest is in no way affiliated with the KKOA or the Paramount Bar, it is wholly a product of Royboy Productions.

The New Blood Award is sponsored by these AWESOME folks:

11 Days And Counting…

On April 3rd, 2014 a new voice forces itself onto the digital airwaves. A new on demand online radio show all about the Midwestern Rod/Kustom scene will go live on settostunproductions.com

Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes: The Royboy Radio Show will be a weekly show where I share my travels and adventures with you in an audio form. The plan is to take my audio recorder with me to events and capture the stories of the people I meet. What was their first cool car. What car do they wish they’d never sold, etc. The plan is to ask folks the same questions each time, with follow up questions depending on the answers that we get. If you have a question that you’d like to see added to the list, comment on this blog page below. I can’t guarantee that I use them all but I will consider all entries. I want Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes to be OUR show, not just mine. I want you to look forward to the next installment, to see who I talk to next, etc.

There will be a post here on royboyproductions.com with a streaming player, and full show notes including photos when appropriate. Or you can go to settostunproductions.com to stream the show. The best way to get it for us on this end is if you go to itunes (once it’s available) and subscribe. I will give you all a link ASAP.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the “Name My Podcast” contest. The winner is Matt Yost, I’ll be contacting you and mailing your prize package out to you SOON!

See you at a show,

Royboy

2014 Nostalgia Sidā€™s Open House

This week I ran a contest to find a new name for my new podcast which launches on April 3rd, 2014 on the Set To Stun Productions Podcast Network. The new name and the winner of the contest will be announced tomorrow and I’m stoked about the name and the show. The plan is to bring an audio version of what I do here to you, including short interviews with folks live at car shows and other events. I have been blessed to become friends with folks who have combined CENTURIES worth of experiences in the rod/kustom world and I want to mine that experience for great stories and tales of adventures from all of these great folks.

Name My Show!

CONTEST HAS ENDED, THANK YOU!

Some of you are in on it, and some are not. Well here, the cat is out of the bag, the plan is for a new podcast to join the Set To Stun Productions Network the first week of April. The host of that show will be me! That’s right, for those of you that would prefer to keep up on all that is going on in the Midwest Rod and Kustom scene in an audio fashion instead of print there will be a weekly podcast.Ā  The plan for now is for me to do some monologue telling any stories that came up that week, as well as having guests on from different parts of the Midwest to talk about what’s going on at their shops, in their clubs, at their shows. The goal will be the same as it is here, to inspire you to come out and join us at the shows.

Mickey from Stray Kat Kustoms (Stray Kat 500 and Starliner promoter and genuine great guy) came up with what I thought was a great name for the podcast. “Redline” seeing as I’m always going at just about full tilt boogie to get to the next show to shoot more coverage and post it up here. However there are already a couple of podcasts out there with that name or a derivation of it. So with about 12 days to go, I’m on the search for a new name! I need to have a couple of days to come up with the logo as well so I’m putting you folks on to job of coming up with a name. You have until Midnight Thursday March 20th to turn in your entry. Just head on over to the Contact page, fill in your name, your email address and then give me your suggestion for the podcast name. One suggestion will be picked as the winner and will receive a prize package including a Hot Rod Stencil Shirt, 2 Royboy Productions Stickers, and the winner’s choice of a red or black Royboy embroidered flexfit hat OR an embroidered Royboy Winter Hat. More prizes may be added to the prize package during the week. Enter as often as you’d like, good luck!

CONTEST HAS ENDED, THANK YOU!

See you at a show,

Royboy

As of the writing of this blog (12:30 am on Saturday) I will make the decision tomorrow morning to continue south into Texas for the Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals at Fort Worth’s Texas Motor Speedway which has a 90% chance of rain or turn around 2 hours and go back north to Guthrie, OK to Nostalgia Sid’s Open House which has a 70% chance of rain.Ā  Either way I end up in the OKC area Saturday evening to try to get a photo shoot in if the weather permits. It’s now about 1am and I’m beat, heading to bed. Listen to Friction In The Static podcast that goes live on Monday to hear more about the contest.

Week in Review: 2-10-14

As this post goes live I’ll be just about done at my required 3 hours at my day job. By 10:02 I’ll be east bound headed for Kansas City for the World of Wheels at Bartle Hall. Later in the day it’s south bound headed for Tulsa. I’ve already seen a ton of photos from Tulsa and all of the legendary builders and pinstripers that are there hanging out. I can tell that nothing is going to go to schedule this weekend, too many kool folks to talk to along the way. Stay safe, drive safe, get your car out if you can this weekend and enjoy it! I’ll do my best to post the first of the KC show coverage tomorrow. I hope you all enjoy it! If you do, share it with your friends, that’s how we’ll get this thing big enough that I can afford to do it full time and at that point bring you weekly car/bike features, interviews, videos etc. I have all of the equipment to do all of this stuff, just no time while working 50+ hours a week at the day job. I need all of your help to make that happen and I promise to give you the best Midwestern based hot rod, kustom, vintage bike, gasser, dragster, etc. coverage that I can.

Kerouac, Route 66, And Royboy?

As I write this from my hotel room in Weatherford, OK itā€™s Wednesday evening February 12th. Iā€™m on the road with my Dad who also works for my employer for the day job. The hotel is right on old Rt. 66 and we got to travel a bit on the old road today. It got me to thinking about being on the road, about looking for adventures, finding good people and experiencing life.

A few years ago while listening to the Ron & Fez show on Satellite Radio I heard Ron talk about Jack Keroaucā€™s novel ā€œOn the Road.ā€ I went out and got a copy and read it cover to cover, finishing it about 20 miles west of where I am right now in a hotel room much like this one on a road trip with my dad much like this one for our day jobs.

Keroaucā€™s tales in ā€œOn the Roadā€ are based on his own travels back and forth across the U.S. mostly in the late 1940ā€™s. If you havenā€™t read it yet, get yourself a copy and read it. It will feed your wanderlust, youā€™ve been warned!

As we drove down the Mother Road today, I looked over at my dad and told him ā€œYeah, I can feel it, I can feel the call of the Road.ā€ He laughed a bit but I could tell that the history of the Mother Road and all of the untold stories of decades worth of travelers intrigue him just as they intrigue me.

Maybe thatā€™s part of what drives me to be gone nearly every weekend to a car show and what is driving me to be transition to a more transient lifestyle. As Iā€™ve mentioned before my goal for this website is to increase daily viewership to the point that I can have the daily advertisers paying my bills to allow me to live in an RV and traveling from city to city, town to town in search of kool stories about hot rods/kustoms to convey to all of you.

Sitting in the diner across the street from our hotel, watching the cars going by I can’t help but imagine it 60 years ago. How great would the old road look with brand new iron from the 50’s rolling up and down both lanes? Yes I’ve seen the movie “Cars” too many times and yes it gets me every time that scene hits. Visually that was a tremendous time for autos and architecture, style was still at the fore front instead of getting things done for the bottom dollar.

Tomorrow weā€™ll get back on the road towards home. These brief adventures down the now nearly deserted highway only 1\2 mile off of the well traveled interstate always move me, I always get the urge to stay on her, to explore the adventures that I’m sure lay just beyond the next bend or over the next hill. Iā€™ll miss the Mother Road and her allure until the next time we cross paths.

See you at a show,

Royboy

This monthā€™s prize is a pinstriped piece from Pinstriping By Lizzie, a Royboy Knit Winter HatĀ & a shirt from Hot Rod Hill Climb!

$1000 up for grabs for the New Blood Award!

Iā€™ve noticed over the last few years that at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular the general crowd tends to be older than I am. Thatā€™s not necessarily a bad thing, thereā€™s a mountain of know-how in the legends of kustomizing that show up at the KKOA. However, if I look around at the Lonestar Roundup, Iron Invasion, Viva Las Vegas, or many other shows I see a younger crowd shows up. Thatā€™s awesome! We need new blood coming to all of these shows to keep them surviving year after year. So how do I encourage some of those folks to drive out to Salina for the KKOA like they drive to all of these other great shows?

Last year I had the idea that I wanted to give an award to someone under 40 that was showing a car at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. I thought it would be a way to help promote the show to a younger audience. I called up a bunch of friends and they all donated prizes or big discounts on their services to a prize package that went along with the award. Great half ass idea. The award is only part of it, in order for it really to mean something I needed to promote the whole deal. It needs to be a bigger, crazier idea. It needs to be a reason for someone to drive a few hundred miles.

Thatā€™s where this yearā€™s plan comes into beingā€¦ So how do I encourage someone to attend the show when they may be on the fence about making the trip? Cash! No, not Johnny, cold hard cash. $500 to the winner should help encourage folks. In talking with some show promoter friends they encouraged me to do 2 prizes. 1 that I pick, and 1 that you, the fans, pick. $500 each, $1000 total giveaway. The 2 cash prizes will be given away at a party at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS here is the party info.

Hereā€™s the plan!
I will get 10 award sponsors to donate $100 each to the prize pot, I actually already have 5 lined up including my $100 with another 1 maybe at this time. In return for their donation what do they get? From now until the last weekend of July they get advertisement both on my blog and on my social media sites. Really a good deal for 100 bones. Iā€™ll be promoting the awards here on the blog and on the H.A.M.B. and Iā€™ll be talking about the event and the sponsors a lot in the coming months.

So who is eligible for this award?
Okay hereā€™s the scoop. I want this award to help encourage new cars and car owners to come to the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. So the eligible vehicles have to be new to the KKOA Leadslead Spectacular, never shown at one before in it’s current condition. I want to encourage younger owners to attend so the owner must be under 35 years of age. The Leadsled Spectacular is not the Muscle Car Spectacular, itā€™s not the Street Rod Spectacular, itā€™s not the C10 Chevy pickup Spectacular. This show is supposed to be about kustoms and old school hot rods, notice I did not say rat rods. Nope, this award will only go to cars that have the basic look and feel that youā€™d find in the little pages type magazines of 1963 and older. So with the exception of something like a 65 Riviera which is widely considered to be a factory kustom the the car generally needs to be a 63 or older body style done in a style that approximates what it could have been done like in 1963 or before.

Whatā€™s that mean?
No weird crap for the sake of shock value ratty cars. No muscle cars. No street rods with digital dashes. No Billet Wheels. No Independent front suspension on fenderless cars. Get the idea?

How do you enter?
Basically to enter you need to send in some information, on this page. Those that meet my criteria will be entered in the contest. Registration for the contest starts March 1, 2014 and ends June 14th, 2014.

How do you win?
Like I said, there will be 2 prizes given out. The first one will be selected by the fans on royboyproductions.com All of the entered cars will be featured on one page and fans will be able to vote on that page of the site. Simply put, the most votes between June 15, 2014 and July 14, 2014 will win. More on this to come later.Ā The second way to win is by MY choice. Royboyā€™s contest, Royboyā€™s choice on the winner. Iā€™ll pick the car that I think deserves the cash prize and then Iā€™ll look the car over at the show to pick a final winner.

Is this an official part of the KKOA?
Nope. I just like that they throw a pretty good show in my hometown and I want to support the show and get new blood involved in the show.

Does the car have to show up at the show to win?
Yes. You must show up and be a registered entrant of the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in order to win. The internet voting will be recorded so that if the first place winner is a no show, the 2nd place winner can take home the prize.

Whereā€™s all of the legal mumbo jumbo?
I hope that we can all act like adults and treat this as what itā€™s meant to be, a fun way to attract a younger crowd to join the legendary builders that attend the KKOA show in Salina. If you need a lawyer for this deal, youā€™ve missed the damn point of it all. That being said, the rules are subject to change as I see fit to try to keep it fair and fun for everyone involved.

Set Your Phasers To Stun!

Over the course of the last 5 or so years podcasts have started really picking up in popularity. For those that don’t know what they are, they’re essentially radio shows that instead of being broadcasted over the airwaves where they’re subject to FCC rules and the fact that they are sitting on a server somewhere means that you can stream it to your phone, computer, or with an AppleTV box directly to your TV whenever you want to. If you find a new show that you enjoy, you can go back and listen to all of the back episodes at your leisure.

In 2011 my buddy John Wells of Vintage Torque was crashing at my house during the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. We were sitting around the house talking about music and bands and cool cars when he asked if I had ever listened to Friction In The Static.

“What in the hell is that?”

“It’s a podcast you can get from iTunes, this guy named Tiny talking about traditional rods and kustoms.”

That sold me on it. I went and subscribed, and to be honest, I didn’t listen to many at first. I had a rather full schedule of XM Radio that I listened to each day and I just didn’t have time to add more content to my daily consumption. Later that year I started getting into the episodes and found myself hooked. Since then there’s barely been a week that’s gone by that I haven’t listened to the show. First off, I’m going to warn you that this is uncensored and no holds barred audio, if you’re offended by language, don’t listen.

Go to Set To Stuns’ website here.

See the podcast list in iTunes.

The show is also available on Stitcher.

Also on the podcast network now are some other shows like “Hack With Ambition,” “Hero Co Radio Show,” and “Adult Supervision Required.” The Set To Stun Productions network is also producing video content and working on a kustom kulture TV show without all of the needless crap faux drama of Ā your typical tv show.

Here’s a video on a badass Mercury pickup.

Go, listen, subscribe.

See you at a show,
