Event Coverage: 2013 Johnny Torres Upholstery Open House

I’ve known Johnny Torres for a few years  now, so when he invited me down to the Open House at his Johnny Torres Upholstery at 915 S. Main in Hutchinson, KS of course I was going to make the trip. I’ve watched his car go from primered and just on the road to finished kustom, it’s been a fun ride. He has been doing kustom upholstery work for a while now both here and occasionally out in CA when he goes out to visit his Beatnik brethren. I’ve captioned the photos so they should tell the story.

While hanging out I ran into one of Johnny’s friends Roy Field who along with his brother Justin and dad have a shop space across the street about a block up from Johnny’s place. Roy has a beautiful 49 Ford that you see above, and has a Bonneville car and they’re working on a dragster and his dad was KKOA member #6. Roy invited me over to see the shop and bit of his dad’s automobilia collection.

Here’s where I apologize, I tried a new lens hand held in this low light and the results were less than stellar. I shot maybe 30 more photos and none of them came out, I will not be using that lens in this situation again.

Today I’m off to shoot 2 small town Kansas shows, tomorrow the coverage from those shows will start, early next week expect to see the first drafts of the 2014 Calendar for Charity!

Hope you had a great Indpendence Day!

I’m going to take the day off from showing you car show photos and share some fireworks shots with you. Hope that’s okay, back to the car-centric posts tomorrow!

For the last few years some good friends of mine have invited me out to a relative’s farm where we can really blow some stuff up on Independence Day. Usually we spend the day in the pool or on the deck enjoying drinks and stories then move out to the farm for a grilled feast and more good times with great people.
As I’ve shown for the last couple of years I’ve experimented with some long exposure photos. Here are some from the last couple of years:

This year I did some long exposures for the bigger fireworks as well.
My favorite shot of this year.
These kind of remind me of wheat.
I hope that you enjoyed these. If you’d like to experiment with long exposure photography you need 2 things, a steady place for your camera (either a tripod or just a steady place to set it but I highly recommend a tripod), and a camera that allows you to adjust shutter speed to a few seconds. Set your camera up for the composition that you’d like and then experiment with a long exposure of a few seconds to see how much light it lets in and different apertures and ISO. Remember that a lower f-stop (aperture) will let in more light but will also have a more shallow depth of field and that a higher ISO will make grainy “noise” more likely. I’ll be doing some more long exposure low light shots this year at a few events that go later into the evenings.

If you have any questions on specifics of how to do these shots, feel free to contact me directly.

See you at a show,

Royboy

Already collecting bugs, only 2 hours into the trip.

Clear weather as I rolled east for Springfield, MO.

Saturday morning I got to the show early so I could have plenty of time to see all of the cars roll in. This sedan was cleaaaaan.

Doug was kind enough to make some room for the Royboy shirts, posters and hats in his booth. Thanks Doug!

Right next door was the RJay’s Speed Shop booth.

I took a break from the show to head into the VFW where the show was held. This ham & cheese omelet came with hash browns & biscuits & gravy for $5. I was full.

So then it was back out to the show.

Bret’s 40 Ford.

More to come of it later

Anyone know what engine this is off of the top of their heads? I can’t put a name to that “face”
