2014 Nickerson Car Show

Every once in a while plans change. This weekend was one where the plan changed. Originally we had planned to go to the KC area for a poker run, but with a low bank account and a few days left in the month to stretch that account, I had to find an option closer to home. So I sat down and came up with a new plan. When a friend told me about a small town show in the city of Nickerson, KS it fit perfectly with me needing to go to Hutchinson, KS to do a shop visit at Johnny Torres Upholstery and to stop and see the Fields family shop.

The small town of Nickerson is just a few miles north east of Hutchinson which is about an hour northeast of Wichita. It took me a little while to find the small simply titled “Car Show” sign on the side of the street. The sign showed me the way to small park the size of a city block. There were cars all around the outside edge of the park, plenty of room for more inside of that ring. There were a few hot rods, 1 custom and a bunch of nice classic cars including muscle cars, & some stockish cruisers.

See you at a show,

Chrome Skulls, Bugs, Cowboy Hats & Yes Even Car Parts

I’m sure most of you have heard of spray on chrome. It’s been around for awhile now. Not many people are doing it right so you see guys routinely pop up, show off a few pieces and then disappear. That’s not the case at Alternative Chrome Creations at 8900 S. Broadway in Haysville, KS. They have been slowly perfecting the art of chroming anything that you can paint for a couple of years now. You won’t see any big advertising from them, or booths at shows across the country…yet. Owner Larry Perkins says “we wanted to be sure we could deliver a quality product before we started marketing all over the place. Even without it we are busy all of the time.” Their shop was full of parts in various stages of the process including some finished pieces that were really amazing.

 I
I’m sure I have some Texas friends that want this piece.

One of the many great folks that I’ve met along all of these adventures is my buddy Doug. Doug sells shirts at many shows across the midwest, we run into each other quite a bit. He has a show in Winfield, KS called the Winfield Garage Show. For the 2nd year I took my Galaxie to the show, it’s a small show but lots of good people. Hopefully the show can grow a bit in the next few years, Doug does a great job of putting on a show.

2014 Gypsum Summer Car Show and Pie Festival Part 1

With about 3 weeks between them and the date, a local restaurant owner and one of his most loyal patrons set out to have a car show on Memorial Day weekend in the tiny town of Gypsum, KS. The eating establishment in question is the newly opened Exit 14, a play on a comical sign at the edge of the single paved street town proclaiming “Gypsum Next 13 Exits.” The patron in question is my uncle the internet infamous Poverty Flats, Paul Kruse.

With 3 weeks planning the show went off great. 75 cars showed up from as far away as Springfield, MO and Lincoln, NE. Good food was had at Exit 14, stories were told and pies were awarded, all in all a great success.

 Part 1 | Part 2

The view looking north on Maple Street in Gypsum. The blue building on the right was my uncle and aunt’s hardware store up until last November, the Pepsi sign on the left is Exit 14.
Brian’s car is full of kool. He recently showed me pics of the chop going down at DeRosa’s shop at about the same time that Barry Weiss’ Cadillac was there, the Caddy can be seen in the background of some of the progress shots of this car.
All the way from Springfield, MO was our friend Dick Craig in his simple yet kool 54 Chevy.
A local car that’s been built in the shop it sits in front of in this pic.
Quite a crew from Osborne, KS there were more but these were the roadsters of the group.
I love this car. The owner is pretty awesome too.
Dick’s 5 window is pretty near perfect, and awfully damn yellow :).
Lizzie of Pinstriping by Lizzie brought her 62 Buick Special up from Tulsa, OK. She even made a pie to give out as her own award.

My friend Donny’s car. The world lost this amazing guy a decade ago but his father still shows his car from time to time. dB was one of the good ones, I miss you brother.

More to come tomorrow including the pie winners!

2014 Pratt Fire Department Car Show

Pratt, KS is about 2 hours southwest of my home in central KS. On Saturday May 24, 2014 we headed down to Pratt for a car show put on by the Pratt Fire Department. I don’t know why this show hasn’t taken off, Memorial Day weekend in this area doesn’t have much going on show wise unless you want to drive 5 or so hours to the NSRA Nationals in Springfield, MO. I’ll be heading back to this show again next year if at all possible. I’ll even bring my car… if it isn’t broken again…

2014 Atwood Early Rod Run Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3| Part 4

May 17, 2014 I took my 2nd trip to the annual Atwood Early Rod Run in Atwood, KS. This small northwestern KS town holds a show each year that draws cars from both the local region and some long haulers. The City park at the north of town has campers of all makes and models as the folks flock to the city for the weekend. The event is equal parts party, car show and drag races. Like the last time that I made the 3 1/2 hour trip, there was just enough rain to have the show but too much for the drags to go down.

2014 Throttle Jockeys Car Show & Drags Part 1

This past weekend (April 26, 2014) was the 3rd Annual Throttle Jockey Car Show & Drags in Herington, KS. I’ve known a few members of the Throttle Jockey club for awhile and I’ve been bummed to have missed the first two shows due to a busy schedule. Herington has the perfect business district for a car show, the main highway was moved out of the city decades ago so there was no issue with the city blocking off the main drag for the show. Registration was 8-10 and the show went to 12 then the crowd moved to the Herington Regional Airport, an old WWII airfield east of Herington out in the sticks.

One of the runways of the old airfield has been converted to an 1/8th mile drag strip. The city of Herington has a big history with railroads and that’s evident with the railroad tie barriers that were separating the track from the crowds. That was some serious protection! The pics of the drags will come but we’ll start with the shots of the show.

Swap Meetin’ Kansas Style

On Friday my facebook feed was full of friends’ photos of the kool stuff that they were buying at the Wichita Model A Club Swap Meet in Park City, KS at the Pavillions next to what used to be called the Kansas Coliseum, the same location of the upcoming Chill car show at the end of the month. Unlucky for me that I couldn’t go until Saturday because there was a ton of good stuff that people were picking up. Not that I was going to pick the items up or that I would have even been able to spot them but it’s good to know that some gold was found on Friday.

Here are some photos from walking around on Saturday:

Royboy Feature Videos

A couple of years ago I came up with the idea to do car features in video form. For some of you that have been following for awhile, you’ve seen these before. For the new folks take a few minutes and hopefully enjoy!

The concept is simple, get the car owner on camera telling the story of the ride. Unfortunately it is a time consuming process and time is what I don’t have much of. So…. there are 2 to date. I am planning on releasing a 3rd one next week (a year after I meant to release it). And hopefully more will follow. Feature videos are the perfect way to capture your memories of your favorite ride to remember for the rest of your life and pass on to future generations.

Motorcycle Feature: Bryce Schmidt’s 81 Yamaha Cafe Racer

Now I know that the main feature of this site is traditional styled hot rods and kustoms, but my motor based interests vary a bit from that narrow niche. I have a lot of talented friends building a lot of different types of vehicles, Bryce is one of them. A local Salina guy, Bryce has a very low, stretched chassis and sickenly fast Jeep dragster, as well as some other projects like this bike. A few months ago he asked if I’d take some photos of the bike in this under construction phase, I’m a sucker for something new so I jumped at the chance.

From time to time I will feature stuff like this that falls outside of my normal scope just to feature some talented builders, after all the main focus on this site is to show off the fact that you don’t have to live near an ocean to build kool stuff. Now on to the photos.

Bryce is also working on a Harley chopper this winter and I am hoping to shoot it when the bulk of construction is done, then of course 2 more shoots with the bikes once they are finished and painted. I have plans on shooting more bikes in 2014, mostly old school choppers, triumphs, BSA’s etc. that are pretty cool and Kansas built.

Shop Visit: Premier Body and Paint

A couple of weeks ago when my weekend plans were changed due to a show being cancelled due to an impending ice storm I looked for alternate places to cover on the site. One of my favorites is my good buddy Jeff Myers’ Premier Body and Paint in Arkansas City, KS, so I decided to head down to AC and see what Jeff was up to. A couple of months ago Jeff bought out a former partner in the business and has been making some changes since then. Things are starting to look different around the shop and I see a new gleam in Jeff’s eye that’s telling me he’s got a renewed energy. I’m looking forward to seeing what Premier turns out in 2014. For those that don’t know Jeff took my car from stock to wild paint last winter, read more about that here, and it may be going back for a couple more kustom touches this winter if the timing works out:).

This beauty is owned by a fellow Beatnik and is at Premier for a chop. Jeff says it\’s one of the nicest cars that he\’s had in for a chop yet.
Formerly this 1960 Ford Fairlane was owned by McPhail. Shortly after going to it\’s new home in NJ the car was sideswiped by a city bus. After being stored at Premier for awhile the body work has now been redone and the car is ready for the kustom fadeaway paint job.

Voodoo Jim\’s Corn Cobb Coupe is in for a freshened Nailhead. While the engine is out it\’s time to dress up the frame and firewall a bit.
This fastback Mustang is in the shop for a bit of frame straightening and is waiting it\’s turn on the rack.
The back shop at Premier is going to be transformed from storage to the Kustom Shop. The front shop will continue to be the collision shop and pay the bills allowing Jeff to do the kustom work back here. Pictured are a couple of cars that are in for some kustom touches.

Jeff’s own 63 Ford Kustom hanging out in the back shop. I’m partial to 63 Galaxie’s and this one is one of my favorites.
