2014 Stray Kat Feed Part 1

For 4 years now I’ve spent the first Saturday of November hanging out with my Stray Kat Kustoms Family at the Stray Kat Feed. We had folks from 5 states show up this year for some sloppy joes, hot dogs, chili and more.

2014 Ratty Bastards Cruise In

After going to the Hot Rod Garage Open House and then the Shoebox Central Open House I stopped downtown in OKC to see some buddies in the Ratty Bastards club who were having a cruise in at Grandads.

2014 Shoebox Central Open House

After hanging out at the Hot Rod Garage Open House in the morning and about an hour and 45 minute drive I arrived at Shoebox Central for their open house. I met a few cars leaving the event but even with them, the parking lot doesn’t hold too many and it was pretty full.

2014 Hot Rod Garage Open House Part 1

In 2013 I finally made the trip down to the Hot Rod Garage Open House in Sand Springs, OK. After hearing about this event for years it was time to make the trek. The Tulsa Timing Association Renunion is part of the same event to add some additional kool to an already awesome event. The 2014 Hot Rod Garage Open House was just as cool.

After the Pinup contest it was time to surprise Dragdaddy with his truck. TwoTall had “borrowed” Dragdaddy’s truck about a year ago and taken it from a rusty pile of steel that was once a truck into a running driving machine. With a S10 frame, V8, and a bunch of other donated goodies, it was a whole new beast. (if the video below doesn’t appear, click here to see it.)

2014 Stray Kat 500 Part 1

Thursday evening we rolled Southeast from the Salina, KS area headed for Bartlesville, OK. Our goal was to get to town for the Stray Kat 500! A couple of hours later I led the 3 car caravan into our hotel, some dinner and chatting with friends and it was time to crash out.

Friday Morning we went to the host hotel to check in and gather up for a cruise about 60 miles east over to Darryl Starbird’s Rod & Custom Museum near Afton, OK. Here are some photo the day.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 Part 4

It’d been 4 years since I’d been to the NSRA Southwestern Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK. To be 100% honest billet wheeled street rods are not my thing. Some can look great for sure but a set of wheels that cost half what I paid for my car is just something I can’t really relate to at this point in my financial life :). Anyways, the show was big, lots of rides, lots of spectators and lots of wind. The vendor building was usually empty for the amount of spectators, I don’t think that the average spectator had any idea that there were vendors in the building. This is the kind of show that a lot of folks leave their hoods open so they can get judged to get a trophy. As such they leave the cars open like that and look like crap in photos 🙂 Oh well. Folks when your hood is open your car looks like it’s broken down, want a trophy? Go to a trophy store :).

On with the photos!

Kerouac, Route 66, And Royboy?

As I write this from my hotel room in Weatherford, OK it’s Wednesday evening February 12th. I’m on the road with my Dad who also works for my employer for the day job. The hotel is right on old Rt. 66 and we got to travel a bit on the old road today. It got me to thinking about being on the road, about looking for adventures, finding good people and experiencing life.

A few years ago while listening to the Ron & Fez show on Satellite Radio I heard Ron talk about Jack Keroauc’s novel “On the Road.” I went out and got a copy and read it cover to cover, finishing it about 20 miles west of where I am right now in a hotel room much like this one on a road trip with my dad much like this one for our day jobs.

Keroauc’s tales in “On the Road” are based on his own travels back and forth across the U.S. mostly in the late 1940’s. If you haven’t read it yet, get yourself a copy and read it. It will feed your wanderlust, you’ve been warned!

As we drove down the Mother Road today, I looked over at my dad and told him “Yeah, I can feel it, I can feel the call of the Road.” He laughed a bit but I could tell that the history of the Mother Road and all of the untold stories of decades worth of travelers intrigue him just as they intrigue me.

Maybe that’s part of what drives me to be gone nearly every weekend to a car show and what is driving me to be transition to a more transient lifestyle. As I’ve mentioned before my goal for this website is to increase daily viewership to the point that I can have the daily advertisers paying my bills to allow me to live in an RV and traveling from city to city, town to town in search of kool stories about hot rods/kustoms to convey to all of you.

Sitting in the diner across the street from our hotel, watching the cars going by I can’t help but imagine it 60 years ago. How great would the old road look with brand new iron from the 50’s rolling up and down both lanes? Yes I’ve seen the movie “Cars” too many times and yes it gets me every time that scene hits. Visually that was a tremendous time for autos and architecture, style was still at the fore front instead of getting things done for the bottom dollar.

Tomorrow we’ll get back on the road towards home. These brief adventures down the now nearly deserted highway only 1\2 mile off of the well traveled interstate always move me, I always get the urge to stay on her, to explore the adventures that I’m sure lay just beyond the next bend or over the next hill. I’ll miss the Mother Road and her allure until the next time we cross paths.

See you at a show,

Royboy

The cacklefest was a nice addition to an Open House, I was inside using the facilities when one of the cars fired up a wall away from me, it was impressive how much of the stuff in the room was rattling from that car sitting 8ft away. The shop has a bunch of high end projects on hand, it was really impressive to see them both the finished rides and the under construction ones.

Event Coverage: 2013 Fast A.L.’s Upholstery Open House

Saturday Sept. 21, 2013 was Fast A.L.’s Upholstery Open House. 1 year before Aaron Lawrence (A.L.) had left his previous position with a high end hot rod shop to run his own upholstery venture full time. This open house is a big milestone for Lawrence, as a year’s worth of kool cars have rolled through his doors and the projects keep booking him out in the future. Do good work at a reasonable price and people will tell their friends, it’s one of the best free advertising principles out there and it works.

The show that started it all…

Essentially I started this kustom and hot rod photographic adventure in 2006. That’s the first photos that I have from my old Sony Digital camera with the small CD discs. I remember that first day in Lawrence, KS filling the camera up with about 180 photos and resorting to my phone’s camera to cover the rest of the show. Those photos were less than inspiring… from both cameras. The show was the 2006 Kruzin’ In The Heartland held in Lawrence, KS.

I’d seen the ad for the show in Ol Skool Rodz I believe, my uncle Paul (povertyflats to many of  you) and my father and I headed up early on Saturday morning to see the show. It was supposed to be hot that day and we were leaving by about noon, but there were only a couple hundred cars max so it wasn’t hard to get all the way through the show in that time.

I had never really seen a hot rod like this, I was used to street rods, this was something new to me, many of these rides looked attainable. Most of the street rods were kind of about how big the billet wheels were, or how much it cost to have this or that machined, these weren’t about that game at all.

The first time I really stopped to look at a FED. I was amazed that the driver was resting his important parts on a part of the car that seemed somewhat fragile kind of like sitting on a grenade and then pulling the pin.

I’ve seen this one around a few times, as I remember it was pretty fast in Salina a couple of years later, then it got kept out of Hunnert a year or two after that for wheels that were too new or something along those lines (those wheels are not on it in this photo).

Don’t shoot into the sun!

I did that a lot that day

Dad in his somewhat goofy hat on the right.

I shot a lot more engines and interiors that day than I do now, maybe I should take the time to do more of those shots, some of  you might appreciate that.

Hey I know that car! Krobe’s other ride! See an article about his 30 Model A Coupe tomorrow here on this blog, use the subscribe feature on the right to make sure you don’t miss it.

This ride would drastically change over the next few years. Built by Bright Built Hot Rods in Salina, KS. After an unfortunate accident with a Subaru, it would become much different.

Hmmmm this one looks familiar too… right Eric?

My first photo of The Tiki Taxi, now Steve has become a good friend.

Jack’s 30 Coupe, Jack’s not too bad a fella either. He also owns the 29 Roadster on 32 rails that I shot a video of last year, and his 51 Ford is under construction now, see the post on Fast AL’s Upholstery for a shot of it.

I wonder now how different my life would have been for those next few years if I’d actually met a few of my hoodlum friends that day instead of seeing their cars and meeting them 6 years later.

Any way that it happened, I’m glad to be able to look back and see my friends were there all along, we just hadn’t crossed paths yet. Get out to a show this year, take a kid and get them involved, meet the people, scope the cars, enjoy it all.

See you at a show,

Travis

Fast AL’s Upholstery Shop Visit 2-3-13

I stopped by Aaron Lawrence’s Fast AL’s Upholstery in Dewey, OK for a visit on Sunday. Aaron is a fellow Stray Kat Kustoms brother & he’s doing some amazing upholstery work.

Aaron is working brother Jack’s 1951 Ford Tudor Sedan Kustom right now. Most of the work on the build was done by Jack himself, but Chris Carlson and crew at Chaotic Customs have done a boatload of work on this very kool kustom.

Fast AL’s next project is waiting it’s turn.

Lots of kool on the walls of Fast AL’s Upholstery

If you need kustom upholstery, Fast AL’s number is in the first photo, give Aaron a call and tell him Royboy sent ya!

See you at a show,
