2014 Hot Rod Garage Open House Part 1

In 2013 I finally made the trip down to the Hot Rod Garage Open House in Sand Springs, OK. After hearing about this event for years it was time to make the trek. The Tulsa Timing Association Renunion is part of the same event to add some additional kool to an already awesome event. TheĀ 2014 Hot Rod Garage Open House was just as cool.

1 Month Warning: Hobo Happening

For years the last event in this region had been the Hobo Happening in Douglass, KS. I’ve been able to attend this mid November event a few times, sometimes it’s 60 degrees and sometimes it’s 35 degrees, but it’s always a bunch of great people having an even better time.

Hot Rods, Rat Rods & Miscommunication

This is NOT a rat rod.

We label ourselves, our cars and everything else we can so that we can separate ourselves from the masses and claim our own tribes. Itā€™s human nature and Iā€™m a victim/proponent of it too. One of the ways that the label ā€œsystemā€ fails us is when the definition of a label changes over time, not everyone gets the memo and then you have people not understanding each other.

2014 Day of the Drags by Wide Whites Photography

2014 Day of the Drags
by Heath Icenhower – Wide Whites PhotographyĀ – On Instagram at @widewhites

Itā€™s a universal fact that we can’t make every event, every year. So we must pick and choose. After seeing photos and hearing stories of last year’s Day of the Drags hosted by the Kontinentals, I decided that DOTD would be added to the list for 2014. Plans were made and cars/trucks were tuned up for the 333 miles drive to Little River Dragway, Holland, Texas on October 11th. However, good old Mother Nature had a different plan. Forecasts of 100% chance and significant rain resulted in a one week postponed Day of the Drags 2014. So, back to the day job for five more days.

2014 Bluesmasters At The Crossroads

2014 Bluesmasters coverage, this is my one non-car thing I do each year and the reason there is no major car coverage this week on the site. For 17 years the Blues Masters At The Crossroads has been held mid October in Salina, KS at the historic Blue Heaven Studios. In 1999 I attended for the first time as a spectator, bummed that I had missed the 1998 inaugural event. I had spent most of the week in Phoenix looking at apartments for my upcoming stint at the Conservatory Of Recording Arts & Sciences. We hammered the throttle down to get home in time for me to attend that 1999 event. Fast forward to August of 2000 and I’m returning to Salina from Phoenix to complete an internship at Blue Heaven Studios to complete my schooling. More after the break…

2014 Gypsum Fall Festival Car Show

Most of my 40 years have been spent in or around Gypsum, KS. Most of the Octobers that I’ve been here I’ve gone down to the Fall Festival held on and around our main drag, Maple Street. The “downtown” area is all on this 1 paved street (except for about a half block off of Maple in each way). There’s a parade, kids games, and in recent years a car show organized by my uncle Paul, known online by many as Poverty Flats.

2014 Duck Drags Part 3

After completing this year’s Drag Week 3rd in class, Mike decided to put some 4.11 gears in the Henry J. The extra torque to the ground put the nose up in the air, that’s power. You HAVE to see the pics of Monkey flag starting the drags later in this post!

1 Month Warning : Pistons & Paint

In 2013 I finally made the trek down to Denton, TX for the Pistons & Paint show. It’s just about time for that show again. Yeah this is a 1 month warning but you have less time than that!

2014 Duck Drags Part 2

There were lineups from just about every combination of vehicles that you could imagine at the 2014 Duck Drags. It was a lot of fun to see what came to the line together and see who could pull of the win.

2014 Duck Drags Part 1

I’d been hearing for a couple of year about the DuckusCrapus Drags at Tulsa Raceway Park. DuckusCrapus.com is a website that has amongst other things an active forum. The drags are a way for the members of the site to come together and have some fun at the strip. Lots of great cars were there Ā and I got some fun photos. If you see a photo that you’d like to have as a print, click on it to go to the gallery page where the photos live and you’ll see a “Buy Photos” button that allows you to pick any size you want.

2014 Old Geezer Show Part 3

Shortly after noon a bunch of us got directions fromĀ the Old Geezer ShowĀ promoter Bill Baker for a good place to go eat. Turns out his suggestion was a bit odd to outside appearances. The place is named Tractor’s and it’s in a Shell gas station. Well, I’ve eaten at weirder joints.

2014 Old Geezer Show Part 2

Although the overall turnout may not have been big, some seriously nice rides were in the mix. Thanks to an unruly tractor owner who wouldn’t move his John Deere we couldn’t get quite the shot we wanted of the Mercs all together, although I did get some later in the day after we moved a few around. The day was full of good friends, stories and good times at the Old Geezer Show.

2014 Old Geezer Show Part 1

For the second year in a row I trekked down to Lamar, MO for the Old Geezer Show. A small town with a small show that’s big on quality and awesome people. A horrible forecast kept the attendance down a bit but what was there was pretty great.

2014 Iron Invasion Pt. 5

With the numbers down due to the weather, it didn’t take long for me to cover the show. I hated to, but with a 10.5 hour drive ahead of us we decided to get on the road early and make it home in 1 drive stint and save the hotel fees. Thanks to John Wells and everyone involved for putting on a great event and having a couple of Kansas boys up for a great time.

2014 Iron Invasion Pt. 4

As the day went on the sun even peeked out a few times, although not for long. The cars just kept rolling in.

2014 Iron Invasion Pt. 3

The rain turned to snow which turned back to rain, really more of a mist than really rain. Just enough to be annoying but not enough to keep me from having the camera out shooting photos. The cars kept rolling in throughout the day, into the main show area, the preferred parking and even into the indoor show spaces. The weather wasn’t kind to the pinup contestants but they were TROOPERS and went on anyways. I was not envious.

2014 Iron Invasion Pt. 2

The cool weather and precipitation might have kept some folks away but those of us that traveled to the show were going no matter what at that point. I made sure to publicly shame anyone on Facebook into showing up :). If a little inclement weather keeps you from hanging out with the rod/kustom family, well then you just don’t have your priorities right, especially when the show is to benefit a great cause like Helping Hannah’s Heart.

2014 Iron Invasion Pt. 1

In 2012 a new show arrived on the scene. A weekend had been vacated by the Hunnert Car Pileup ending it’s run. The new show was put on by a friend so of course I had no problem driving 701 miles each way to check out a 1 day show. The weather was less than pleasant, but the turnout was fantastic. 2013 I didn’t make the show due to attending another event, so when the date for the show changed in 2014, I booked a room and made plans to attend the 2014 Iron Invasion.
