This week was week 1 of the 48 Cars 48 States trip! In this episode I sat down with each of the car owners for a few minutes to get a little bit recorded for all of you to enjoy.
Day 1 of the 48 Cars 48 States trip I got to visit my friends of the Los Punk Rods club at the Greaserama in Tracy, MO. If you want to see the coverage from that event, click here. After the Greaserama visit I hopped in the Galaxie and pointed it east on I-70 through Missouri, across the Mississippi River at St. Louis and then over to Mount Vernon, IL.
The 4th and final post of the 2017 Greaserama coverage is the biggest post of the week. I hope you’ve enjoyed the photos from the 2017 Greaserama, I want to say a huge thanks to the Los Punk Rods club for putting on this show every year and for supporting my 48 Cars 48 States trip! You all rock and I appreciate it!
Tomorrow on the website you’ll see the start of the 48 Cars 48 States trip travel blog, I’m a few days ahead of the website but hopefully that keeps me ahead of the game throughout the trip.
48 Cars In 48 States : The Great American Road Trip – A 48 state road trip with a stop in each state to photograph a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or drag vehicle. Daily updates will be posted here on royboyproductions.com so you can see where I’ve gone, who I’ve met, some of what I’ve seen. At the end of the trip I’ll produce a 200 page full color book of the entire adventure. You canĀ pre-order the book here!
So many of my friends are at this event it’s a wonder I got any photos shot. From artists Todd Jones, Dragdaddy, Lizzie Fenwick, Hot Rod Heuy, to Marcy from HopUp, John Wells from Iron Invasion and Vintage Torque Fest, TwoTall, to about 3 dozen others that I ran into, it was an awesome reunion.
Greaserama has a great lineup of bands and I got to listen to about 3 minutes of one of them before I had to split, as I’m typing this on Saturday evening I’m seeing Instagram posts and videos of the bands playing in the evening 5 hours behind me in KC and I wish I was still there.
More to come tomorrow.

Although I only had 4 hours to spend at the show, I got about 150 photos shot and talked with a LOT of friends along the way. It’s amazing how many non-KC friends I have that go to this show, I spent more time explaining about the 48 Cars 48 States trip and the mechanical issues that I ran into the caused me to leave the camper at home than I spent shooting photos or videos.
More of the story tomorrow

Today starts 4 days of coverage of the 2017 Greaserama! The 17th annual Labor Day weekend event in the KC area was a blast, even though I wasn’t able to stay long. By the time this post goes up on the site I’ll be well into the first week of my 48 Cars 48 States trip, this was my first stop of the trip. After a small going away party at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS on Friday evening, I got up early Saturday and got the car ready to take off.
The trip was uneventful, my favorite kind of trip. 3hours later I rolled into the Platte County Fairgrounds in Tracy, MO on Saturday morning and found a place to park. The fairgrounds were filling up fast so I grabbed a couple of cameras & got to work. More of the story tomorrow!

It’s that time of year again! Time for YOU to vote for what photos you want to see in the 2018 Royboy Calendars. Voting is simple, just go to the bottom of this page on the website and comment to tell me what your 3 favorite photos are on this page. The votes will be tallied up and the calendar will be created from those images.
This year I’ll do an added calendar featuring the top vote getters from each category in one calendar. So you’ll have the option of getting a Hot Rod, Kustom, Truck, Drags, VW or a calendar with a mix of all them.

While in the middle of my 48 Cars 48 States trip I’ll be attending a few shows, one that I’m glad to have on the list is the Iron Invasion in Woodstock, IL. The show is on Oct. 7th and is always a good time. I was able to attend the show a couple of times, this time I’ll be just up the road, a lot better than the 18 hour round trip drive, but the drive was still worth it.

Sept. 15-16, 2017 will mark my 4th trip to the Hot Rod Hill Climb, now held in Central City, CO. I missed the first one, and from that day and the photos I saw from the event I vowed that I’d be there the next year. I haven’t missed one again.
Last year was the first year for the HRHC to be in Central City, a change that many were worried would ruin the event. Yes, it was different from the previous location, Georgetown, where the original event happened in 1953. But in the end I think it’s a pretty perfect spot. There is a return road so the event can run continuously and folks can take as many passes as they can line up for. There are around 2000 hotel rooms within a couple of miles. The town actually wants us there. It’s a great venue and I’m glad to see the event returning to Central City.

You read that title right. As of the writing of this post (1am Monday morning), the camper will not be making the 48 Cars 48 States trip. I’ll tell you why, but please don’t think of this as me soliticing advice. I have neither the time nor the money to try to get this fixed this week, so I appreciate all of the advice but I still have 50 hours of work at the desk to put in this week and packing, planning etc.
For the 4th and Final post of the 2017 H.A.M.B. Drags coverage I was in the staging lanes and hanging out at the starting line. So much great stuff at the H.A.M.B. Drags! I hope you’ve enjoyed the coverage!

Each time we gather at MoKan for the H.A.M.B. Drags I’m amazed at what shows up. There are some mainstays that come back each year but every year there are some machines that I’ve never seen before. Those new cars are just part of the reason that I return each year. The folks that drive them are the real reason to go back year after year. Seeing Jhole’s new blown FE in his Model A, or Patrick’s “Panty Dropper” dragster, both awesome machines, but the time in the pits getting to BS with folks is what makes the 8 hour drive worth it.

For many years I would leave home Thursday evening of the H.A.M.B. Drags weekend so that I could go over to Springfield, MO for the swap meet there. It’s a ritual for many, a huge swap meet where someone always finds a deal. This year I blasted down and back for the day, not wanting to spend any of my travel money on a hotel room. So it was an up at 5:30am rolling by 6:30 am and back home by 7pm with 500 miles and 250 photos in between kinda day.

2017 marks the 7th time that I’ve made the trek to MOKAN Dragway in Asbury, MO for the H.A.M.B. Drags. The H.A.M.B. Drags is a day of drag racing and a reason for folks to travel from across the country, and some times across the world to gather up and hang out with friends from the H.A.M.B. This week Royboy talks about the upcoming Invasion! (car show) with Rusty Davis of Them! Car Club. The Invasion car show happens Sept. 2nd in Dallas, TX.
One of my mainstays since my first time attending has been the Stray Kat Kustoms Starliner show in Wichita, KS. Since it’s inception the show has been held at the Kansas Aviation Museum, a great backdrop for classic hot rods and kustoms! The show this year is on Sept. 9th with the annual Garage Krawl on the 8th. The Garage Krawl is where we head all over the area to various shops and garages to see cars and folks, a way to get out and about in our cars rather than sit at the show next to our cars for two straight days.
Friday evening at the host hotel for the show we gather and my club the Lonely Knights cooks street tacos for everyone, we all have a good time, with good food and great friends. This is a large part of what makes it my favorite weekend of the year. Saturday starts early with a trip over to the Kansas Aviation Museum, the cars park amongst the planes on the grounds. One of the coolest venues for a show that I attend for sure.

Labor Day weekend in the KC area means 1 thing to me, Greaserama! This Sept. 2-3 will mark the 17th Annual Greaserama, a weekend of hot rods, customs, music, art and great folks. The show happens in Tracy, MO at the Platte County Fairgrounds, a perfect venue for a car show. The fairgrounds have a great vibe to them, which is an important part of any show. Below I’ll share some photos of the past events, if you haven’t been to the show, put it on your schedule!

This week Royboy brings his buddy Jerome Zimmerman of KraZKustoms in North Dakota on the show. We talk about building cars in the middle of nowhere and a bunch of other fun stuff.
This weekend I wanted to spend some time with my Dad and nephews, so I gathered them up and went to a small show. I took my camera but I spent more time being an uncle instead of shooting photos. Lucky for me and all of you I had my friend Iona Bel Air take her camera to the 2017 Slamboree at the Grand Casino Resort in Shawnee, OK and she snapped a few shots for us all to check the show out. Make sure to go like her page on Facebook and tell her thanks for the photos!

This week Royboy sits down for drinks with Austin Grabowski of Grabowski Speed Shop from California. Austin started racing Ā¼ midgets at 6 years old and raced all the way up until he came out to Kansas to attend McPherson College’s Auto Restoration program. After school he went back to CA and worked at a couple of shops until he started his own shop. There’s tons of good stories in this one!
