A couple of years ago while I was at Premier Body & Paint in Arkansas City, KS I spotted a 57 Ford out in the grass next to the shop. Jeff told me that it had belonged to his dad and had a 39o in it. I kind of forgot about the car sitting there until I stopped by one day to check on the progress of the 41 Ford that Jeff has been building for his customer Roy. As it turns out Roy also saw the 57 and a deal had been struck to start a second build. The best kind of customer that a shop can have his basic instructions to Jeff have been to “build it the way you would build it for yourself.” The cars are both coming together and I though I’d share a few pics of the 57 over the last few visits. Look for an update on the 41 in the future as well.

When it was painfully obvious that the weather was not going to cooperate with my NSRA Southwestern Nationals plans last Saturday I was about 100 miles north of OKC. Being that far south I grabbed my phone and made some calls. Chris Whittington of Shoebox Central just so happened to be headed to his shop. Every time I’d been there before had been pretty busy so I figured it was a perfect time to hang out at the Shoebox mecca.
Unfortunately for  me, the weather didn’t work out for my trip down to Oklahoma City for the 2015 NSRA Southwestern Nationals. Lucky for me and you, Travis Miller of Two Tall Okie’s Signs And Such was there on Friday before the rain came and got some shots for everyone to enjoy. I did make it to OKC on Saturday but it was too late, the storms had hit town and there was nobody over at the show. So I went over to Shoebox Central to hang out with Chris there for a bit, I’ll share that story tomorrow and then on Wednesday share some photos of the progress that my buddy Jeff Myers is making on a killer 1957 Ford kustom that he’s building. As I was driving by MOKAN Dragway on the way to Ryno’s Friday night I checked in on Facebook, something I do just out of habit nearly every trip by the track. I’m a nerd, I get it. When I got to Ryno’s he told me there was an event planned for the next day. So I changed up my plans to get back over to the track mid afternoon so I could catch some of the action.

Part 3 of the Hot Rod Hundred coverage picks back up about half way through the 100 miles. The cars were spread out by now with folks stopping at various gas stations and such along the route. I had leap frogged the group a couple of times and I honestly wasn’t sure if I was ahead of the pack or in the middle of them. So I parked my car and sat on the side of the road and waited. Just when I thought I was in the wrong spot I heard the rumble of a V8. I picked up my camera and started grabbing shots.

After the cars got on the road I hopped in my daily and followed along. A few miles into the run I found an opportunity to leap frog around the group. While they were enjoying a section of Route 66 I hopped on the nearby interstate and made up some time. It was a pattern that I’d repeat throughout the run. Jumping ahead of the group and shooting some images as the cars went by.

Saturday, April 4th marked the 2nd annual Southwest Missouri Hot Rod Hundred. We gathered up in the parking lot of the Springfield Catholic High School Saturday morning. Approximately 100 cars were there to take part in the 100 mile run. Part 1 of the coverage is the starting gathering of the run and the cars leaving the school’s parking lot. The maps of the run in  hand we headed out at 9am to drive some great roads. I was able to leapfrog the group a couple of times to get ahead of the group and get some shots of the cars rolling by.

Ask almost any kustom kulture artist these days who or what inspired them to draw they way they do, and you’re likely to hear it mentioned.  Packed full of work from George Trosley, Jim Willoughby, Russ Manning, Fred Boatman, Errol McCarthy, Shawn Kerri, and so many more, CARtoons Magazine combined all of the passion, dedication and constant learning involved in both art and building cars.  It tied them together, gave artists an outlet to show their work off to the hot rod community, and even now it continues to be a part of our culture.

The 28th Annual Donnie Smith Bike show happened this past weekend at the River Centre in Saint Paul. It is always a huge gathering of both new baggers and good old unrestored classics. And everything in between. The addition of the car show upstairs meant even more things to see, along with the usual crowded swap meet area. The faithful turned out in droves to see the entries. Here are some of the favorites seen at the show.

Since I had no car show to attend last weekend I’m filling the site with some other stuff this week. This post has a TON of photos, well if digital photos had weight, I’m guessing these would weigh about that… Anyways, yesterday we had the March Meet coverage by Travis “TwoTallOkie” Miller and later in the week we’ll have some more show coverage by John Wells and a guest post by pinstriper Lizzie Fenwick.
April is shaping up to be a busy car show month! Starting this weekend I’m going to be busy pretty much through November. Stay tuned, it’s going to be a hell of a ride!
Since I can’t be everywhere at once, I call on my friends for help from time to time. While I was off galavanting in Detroit for the Autorama, Ben “Dragdaddy” Mitchell and Travis “TwoTallOkie” Miller went from OK out to Bakersfield for the March Meet. Travis was kind enough to share some of his images with me to share with all of you.
Back in 2013 I decided to give out an award called the Young Blood Award at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. The photo above was an in progress shot of the award being built. Thanks to my friends at Sign House in Salina, KS for building that kool award! So in early 2014 I announced that the award was to be renamed the New Blood Award and I would be giving away not one but two at the 2014 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular, one for a people’s choice that was to be voted on by the public and one that I picked. Then we had a party at the Paramount Bar on Saturday of the KKOA weekend to give the awards away and have some fun!

This week Royboy tells the tale of the 2015 Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals in Fort Worth, TX then sits down for a BS session with photographer Trent Sherrill.
The sky remained cloudy all day, occasionally spitting just a tiny bit, but not raining until about 3 in the afternoon. We ran back over to the car and waited it out. After 15-20 minutes it was nice and dry again and we made our way back into the show, walking through the swap meet area. Plenty of nice rides for what seemed like good prices in the swap meet but I was more interested in the show. Making our way back over to the show cars we made a trip through the vendor area to see some friends.
This is another one of those shows that I just have a great time at because of the people. The cars are secondary, that’s the way it should be in my book.
My friend Jeff showed up in his new to him 56 Chevy. A nice looking ride that a friend of his rebuilt. A couple of years ago the previous owner built up the stock 6 cylinder and after driving it for a year or so he decided he needed a couple more cylinders. The straight 6 came up to KS on my dad’s trailer and the 56 was now capable of keeping up with modern interstate traffic with no problem.

Even though the car count at the 2015 Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals wasn’t what was expected, there were still gems to be found. The 40 Ford above had me drooling. I ran into a few of my North Texas friends and had a great time. The track was wet from rains on Friday and over night so I didn’t see the normal NASCAR Cup cars taking laps with folks in the passenger seat getting the rides of their lives. Later in the day the stretched cup car with 4-5 rows of seats was taking laps. I haven’t done that yet but I will have to try it next time.
The very first car I see as I drive in the north tunnel at Texas Motor Speedway for the 2015 Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals is this beautiful 57 Ford 2 door wagon. While the weather forecast kept the crowd away there were still some beautiful rides that showed up. The forecasted rain didn’t really show up until about 3pm which is when most people start leaving shows anyhow. I had a great time hanging with friends and seeing some cool rides, enjoy the photos below!

Things are about to get busy! After a couple of months of shows here and there, before you know it I’ll be doing shows every weekend. This weekend I’m heading down to the Texas Motor Speedway for the Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals, the photo above is from my last trip down to the show last year. I’m hoping that we have a repeat of last year where the forecast called for rain but it stayed dry the whole time I was there.
This post will feature some photos from previous trips to different shows that are coming up on my schedule. If one’s in your area and it looks like a good time, make plans to be there and come say hi!
