Pratt, KS is about 2 hours southwest of my home in central KS. On Saturday May 24, 2014 we headed down to Pratt for a car show put on by the Pratt Fire Department. I don’t know why this show hasn’t taken off, Memorial Day weekend in this area doesn’t have much going on show wise unless you want to drive 5 or so hours to the NSRA Nationals in Springfield, MO. I’ll be heading back to this show again next year if at all possible. I’ll even bring my car… if it isn’t broken again…
See you at a show,
Royboy

Guest Blog! My buddy Dan Podobinski is a photographer based out of Indiana, he attends a lot of the same type of shows that I do. Since I can’t be everywhere at once, Dan was nice enough to share some of his images from the 2014 Vintage Torque Fest with all of you through the blog here. Okay class now all together say “Thank You Dan!” You may have seen some of his work recently in Car Kulture Deluxe Magazine, or on the HAMB. You need to go follow his page on Facebook here and buy some prints of his great photographs!
When one thinks about hot beds of this lifestyle known as hot rodding, Dubuque, Iowa almost certainly does not come to mind. However, this charming little city on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi has whole heartedly embraced Vintage Torque Fest and has truly made it a part of the city. From the kickoff cruise night in historic downtown until the very last cars roll out of town and head for home, Dubuque has proven to be a great host.
The event, which benefits the Helping Hannah’s Heart foundation, attracted cars from all over the U.S.A. and even Canada! Mother Nature was much more forgiving this year, serving up only a few random sprinkles on Friday and breaking out in full sunshine for Saturday, making for a jam packed scene. The improved weather also allowed for plenty of action on the clay oval, with everything from vintage flat track motorcycles and sprints to everyday hot rods making hot laps to the delight of the throngs of spectators. In between the action there was plenty to do and see. Live music, a nice little swap meet, tons of great lifestyle vendors and last, but not least, the car show itself!
Mark your calendar for next year’s Vintage Torque Fest and do what you can to make it to Iowa and be a part of the action. If you would like to learn more about the reason behind this event, visit www.HelpingHannahsHeart.com

May 17, 2014 I took my 2nd trip to the annual Atwood Early Rod Run in Atwood, KS. This small northwestern KS town holds a show each year that draws cars from both the local region and some long haulers. The City park at the north of town has campers of all makes and models as the folks flock to the city for the weekend. The event is equal parts party, car show and drag races. Like the last time that I made the 3 1/2 hour trip, there was just enough rain to have the show but too much for the drags to go down.

For the last few years I’ve been telling my buddy Eric of the Los Punk Rods from KC that I was going to come by and check out their club shop. I always got to busy or forgot to get ahold of him, quite frankly I was just rude about it and I apologize. The Los Punk Rods folks have been awesome to me over the years, 1st of all putting on the Greaserama which I always enjoy, but more than that just being all around kool folks to hang out with. So with the Pete & Jake’s trip planned for last weekend I finally sent Eric a message that if the offer was still there, I’d like to finally come by and see the shop.
Every manner of project from a vintage front engine dragster to mini bikes to vans, kustoms, hot rods, choppers, the list was long of what was in the shop in various stages of build or disassembly. Some were future builds just hanging out waiting, some were nearly finished, some just works in progress, and while they are in progress they will have the everlovin bejesus driven out of them, that’s how these folks do it.
I will not wait years for my next visit.
See you at a show,
Royboy

For the 2nd time I’ve made the trip over to Peculiar, MO for the Pete & Jake’s Open House. This trip was a bit special, being the 40th Anniversary party for Pete & Jake’s. Congrats on 40 years!

After the Pinup contest it was time to surprise Dragdaddy with his truck. TwoTall had “borrowed” Dragdaddy’s truck about a year ago and taken it from a rusty pile of steel that was once a truck into a running driving machine. With a S10 frame, V8, and a bunch of other donated goodies, it was a whole new beast. (if the video below doesn’t appear, click here to see it.)

Thursday evening we rolled Southeast from the Salina, KS area headed for Bartlesville, OK. Our goal was to get to town for the Stray Kat 500! A couple of hours later I led the 3 car caravan into our hotel, some dinner and chatting with friends and it was time to crash out.
Friday Morning we went to the host hotel to check in and gather up for a cruise about 60 miles east over to Darryl Starbird’s Rod & Custom Museum near Afton, OK. Here are some photo the day.
