When I heard that one of my favorite events, the Starliner show in Wichita, was to be replaced this year by Lead Ain’t Dead, I was both excited and a little sad. The Stray Kat 500 and the Starliner were a great pair of shows, two of my favorites, both about the kustom family first, and the cars second. The Starliner had one of the best host hotel parking lot hang outs of any event that I attend, losing that was definitely something I didn’t want to do.
The Starliner couldn’t be held this year because the McConnell Air Force Base Air show was to be held the same day as the Starliner, and the Kansas Aviation Museum couldn’t have the show on their grounds at the same time. So it was time for a change, and the change would be a kustom show held in Dewey, OK where the Stray Kat 500 is held.
The idea was simple, a show to celebrate kustoms… that’s really it. Two areas of Dewey were sectioned off for the show, one area for kustoms and one area for non-kustoms to park. So if you drove your cool old ride that’s not a kustom you didn’t have to park next to some Toyota Prius in spectator parking, brilliant!
I showed up Thursday evening around 10pm and met up with a couple of my brothers from the Lonely Knights club for a late dinner. Friday morning Mickey lead a group of folks over to visit with Darryl Starbird at his museum about an hour from the host hotel. A few of us decided to hang in Dewey for the day, luckily the rain that was in the area stayed away for the most part, some slight mist and a short shower were all that we had to deal with, while 50 miles to the north streets were flooded and closed.
Friday evening we fired up the Lonely Knights fajita trailer and fed everyone that was within the sound of our voices, and one young fella, the son of our buddy Dustin, downed 11! To put that into perspective, he’s easily ¼ of my size and I made it to 11 as well, well played sir! Friday night we gathered up at the host hotel to hang out and have a BS session that went until late into the night.
Saturday morning was a bit rainy so the normal rush to get to the show was replaced by more of a lazy roll out. We gathered up at the Stray Kat Kustoms hangout spot where the cars had already started piling in. The day was awesome, full of old friends hanging out, doing what all groups of old friends do. By the end of the day a group of about 30 of us all went to dinner and then back to the host hotel for more hanging out and telling stories.
Thank you Mick for knowing when to pull the plug on one event and replacing it with another which worked out so wonderfully. To all of my kustom family that showed up, thank you! You make these shows what they are.

This year at the Greaserama outside of Kansas City I decided to shoot more video and barely any photos. Here’s the video from the event on Saturday, I didn’t get the drone up until late in the day so about half the cars had left but I had a good time hanging out with a bunch of friends.

This episode Royboy talks with Skratch about building cars on Overhaulin’, moving from Texas to California to chase his dreams and we get to hear some great stories of some of his adventures along the way.
For the 2018 H.A.M.B. Drags I tried my hand at shooting some more video than still images. Here’s the video thrown together. This is kind of an experiment for me so if you like it let me know. I had a couple of clips doubled up so this is a new edit.

For 8 years running I’ve been making the trek down to MoKan Dragway outside of Asbury, MO to attend the H.A.M.B. Drags and hang out with great friends. This year I was a little late to the party because on Friday night I got to see Reverend Horton Heat with Wayne “The Train” Hancock in Wichita. For those that don’t know, the H.A.M.B. stands for the Hokey Ass Message Board, which is a message board on the JalopyJournal.com the H.A.M.B. has been one of the go-to places to find all things traditional hot rod and custom for most of the life of the internet. It’s this website that has introduced me to most of the people that I know in the hot rod and kustom car world.Arriving a bit later than I wanted to I was still able to get there before the action started. For the first hour or two that I was on site I was running around shooting video, I’ll try to have that edited and loaded to the site tomorrow, but here are the photos. More info below this quick ad for my book!

This episode Royboy talks with Jeremy White from Rebel Wire about wiring harnesses, how to pick the right harness and fuse panel for your ride and some of the common pitfalls along the way of wiring your ride.
In this episode Royboy gives away his 2018 New Blood Award at the K.K.O.A. Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, KS then has on guests Chris Ryan, Eddie Potestio and Mike Keller to talk about building cars for a living and whatever else came to mind.
The KKOA Leadsled Spectacular was here before I knew it. Wednesday I took my camper in to the park and set up in my vendor area with visions of spending the weekend with friends, seeing cars, and selling a ton of books in my head.
More of the story in the post….But first, an ad for my book 🙂

After having to skip the 2017 Meltdown Drags due to some troubles with getting the Galaxie ready for the 48States trip, I was stoked to get to head back to Byron, IL for the 2018 Melt Drags! I called up my buddy Corey Conyers from Crown Custom in Wichita to go along with me. A car that he recently built was set to debut at the event so it seemed perfect for him to come along to see the event for himself.

This year for the 2018 Goodguys Heartland Nationals I decided to do things a little differently. I put together a little video of the event and some photos. Let me know what you think about this change to how I do things. With 100’s of people shooting photos at events and posting them all over social media I see less and less need for the car show/hobby promotion that I started this website for. I’m looking for ways to keep what I do fun for me and also provide you with coverage of events.
This episode Royboy shares a few beers with some of the PrimarysCC of Wichita, KS. We talk about the upcoming Rumble Run in October and tell some stories as the beers continue to flow. This one has some language in it so you’ve been warned.
This post of the 2018 Custom Car Revival coverage will be a little different. In the middle of this post you should see a slideshow of the entire event. If you click on that slide show you can see the entire gallery of the event. This way there are less emails clogging your inbox and you get to see all of the photos of an event all at once!
48 Cars In 48 States : The Great American Road Trip – A 48 state road trip with a stop in each state to photograph a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or drag vehicle. I completed the trip in November 2017 and have been working on a 224 page coffee table book of the entire 9 week adventure since. The book is shipping in June and only 35 copies remain. You can order the book here!
Again this year I traveled over to Indianapolis, IN for the 2018 Custom Car Revival. My buddy Kevin puts the event on and it’s one that I never want to miss not just because some great cars show up but also because of the people. This is THE place to be to hang out with the keepers of the custom car faith.
After returning from Texas for work late on Monday evening I was able to pick up about 100 of the 48 Cars 48 States books on Tuesday and ship a handful on Wednesday before leaving for Indy. After 10 hours at the day job I put down about 6 hours to get me out to Hannibal, MO where I met up with Mick Bryan of Stray Kat Kustoms shows and Travis “TwoTallOkie” Miller.
Thursday we got rolling early headed on to Indianapolis and were able to roll in around 2pm finding the host hotel parking lot already filling up with great rides and old custom friends.
Here’s the 5th and final day of coverage of the 2018 Hot Rod Dirt Drags, I hope that you enjoyed the photos and got a sense of what the event is all about. Thanks for coming to the site to see all of the fun.
I’d tried for years to get my dad to join me, here’s a shot of him and my friend John Binger racing their banger powered Model A’s down the track! So much fun!
Above you see the Overholts throwing some rocks during the night drags on Friday night. We had a blast watching the cars run through 1st and 2nd gear and putting on a show for the night drags. Then we all gathered up and had some bench racing sessions all over the host hotel parking lot, there were coolers opened and beers drank and lots of stories told. It was a great day!

This year I talked my dad into attending the 2018 Hot Rod Dirt Drags in Monte Vista, CO with me. We headed out from home mid morning Thursday with some stops to make along the way for work. After the work day was done we found ourselves 6 hours from Monte Vista, we pointed the F250 west and headed for the mountains.
Friday morning we went out to the Best Western Movie Manor to get our registration and start the weekend hanging out with friends. The Speedster wasn’t running quite right so we ended up finding a couple of Model A experts Larry and Rick who helped us get it going. A few hours went by and the car was running again. Dad and John Binger were selected along with 12 or so other sets of cars to do the Night Drags on Friday night. These are some 1st/2nd gear pulls to just put on a show with all of the rest of the cars parked along the track using their headlights to light the track.
Here are some photos from Friday, there will be more to come all week long!
Thanks again to Derek Campbell and Velma for the photos from Santa Maria! Here’s part 3. Go follow him on Instagram here and her on Instagram here and make sure to say thanks for sending us these photos.
