2015 Showdown In The Valley Pt. 3

The Showdown In The Valley had a large parking lot section as well as the indoor arena. It was hot. I may be a wimp but it was hot and not fun out there when I went out. Probably just me being a wimp that was used to the AC inside. Here are some shots from the outdoor area and a few select pinup shots from the 4 pinup shoots that I did on Saturday.

2015 Showdown In The Valley Pt. 2

The indoor/outdoor setup of the Showdown In The Valley was a godsend when the temps reached 100. I can see this arena as a great place to put on a small indoor show in the winter.

2015 Showdown In The Valley Pt. 1

I haven’t been able to attend the Showdown In The Valley lately, so this year when I was told that the date and venue for the show put on by the Mulvane Marauders, I was in. The new venue is the arena at the Kansas Star Casino west of Mulvane next to I-35. The plan this year was to have 80-90 cars in the arena and the rest outside, as the temps were nearing or right at 100 degrees this was a great idea for those of us that were vendors.

2015 Custom Car Revival Pt. 4: Coverage Brought To You By Six Foot Six Creative

I was asked to pick a recipient for the Car Kulture Deluxe award for the show. Jesse and Jessica Wolfsen brought this awesome 1940 Mercury convertible. When Chuck Leighton needed our help on Friday night with two ailing cars, it was Jesse that was there, scraping his knuckles, helping Chuck all the way. With so many great cars at the show I had a hard time picking a car to win. I figured a young couple that is willing to spend their time helping friends get their cars running again was just the little extra boost that would take this car over the top.

After enjoying a great dinner with friends Friday evening we came back to the host hotel. I walked around and shot some photos then got asked to take a buddy on a parts run. Both he and his wife brought their cars and both were acting up. A quick run to the parts store got the goods and a couple of friends helped get the cars going again for the show. The people that attend the Custom Car Revival are what makes this show amazing, the fact that they bring these awesome kustoms just makes the weekend all the better.

Friday morning it was time to line up and go on a cruise across Indianapolis to see the Dream Cars exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The display was amazing, after that my group left the main group and we went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and toured the museum there. It’s truly something that you should do if you ever get the chance.

2015 Custom Car Revival Pt. 1: Coverage Brought To You By Six Foot Six Creative

After making the trek to Indianapolis last year for the Custom Car Revival I told myself I’d be back. This weekend I kept my word to myself and had a great time in the process. Wednesday evening after work I joined up with some of my friends from the Lonely Knight Car Club from Colorado Springs. When we hit the host hotel on the south side of Indianapolis they had put down just over 1100 miles one way. The photos in this post are from the host hotel parking lot on Thursday evening. This parking lot is one of the best shows that I attend all year long. Enjoy the photos!

Shop Visit : Ryno Built Drops A 56 Chevy

I mention my buddy Ryno a lot. There’s a few reasons:

1.) I like to talk about my talented friends who are doing good work

2.) he always seems to have some cool rides coming through the shop

3.) his spare room seems to be my base of operations for that region so I get to see what he’s working on quite a bit.

Awhile back he got a new project from a friend of ours from TX. Rudy had a 56 Chevy that had been in the family for decades and he wanted it rebuilt. It had been used out in the oil fields and had been stored for years. I’ll tell more of the story when the car is done, for now that’s enough back story.

2015 Starbird National Rod & Custom Hall Of Fame Pt. 1

A couple of years back I saw that Darryl Starbird was having the National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame induction on Friday night of the Tulsa car show and I knew that I had to attend. I took a half day off from work to get down to Tulsa in time for the ceremony with no real idea of what to expect. What I experienced was one of the koolest evenings of my life. Here I was in a room with some of the legends of the car world in a small crowd in a small banquet room.

So this year when I saw the event was going to happen at the National Rod & Custom Museum near Starbird’s home I decided to attend. The Hall of Fame festivities have been going on for 20 years, most of them right there at the museum. When the event has been at the Museum there’s been a car show attached to it, most of the time down along the shore of Grand Lake at the back of Starbird’s property. This year that would not be the case as that area was about 6ft under water.

There were a lot of nice rides at the show, a ton of great people, some good music was playing while I was there and I hear there was a tremendous breakfast buffet inside that I didn’t get to check out. I’m bummed that I didn’t get to stay longer!

2015 Queen City Riot Coverage Pt. 1

3rd year, 3rd time I’ve made it over to Springfield, MO for the Queen City Riot. This was a busy weekend so I didn’t have a lot of time to spend in Springfield, but what time I was there I had a great time talking to good people and checking out cool rides. The Knuckle Draggers club puts on a nice shindig each year. I wish the show was a bit bigger but I think they have the makings of a great event if they can just find the formula to get it to take off.

A lot of the vendors are friends of mine and I feel that as a friend I should do more to support them so I’ve thrown a couple of photos of their booths in with links to their sites. Please support these great small businesses!

2015 Rust Revival Coverage by Judd’s Custom Photos

One of the shows that I’ve wanted to hit for a few years and still haven’t hit yet is Rust Revival. Coolest Graduation Party Idea Ever?

This weekend I didn’t have any major events to attend, so when I was invited to a car show/high school graduation party for my friend’s son Ryan, I was down! Instead of  your normal party they just invited the car community to come hang out with them and bring their cool rides. The turnout wasn’t huge but there were some great folks in attendance.

2015 Poverty Flats Car Show & Pie Festival Pt. 3 Brought To You By Stray Kat Kustoms

Great friends from TX, OK, NE, MO, CO and of course KS filled our 1 paved street with cool cars and great stories. Before I knew it, it was time for the awards presentation. I tried to throw in some more people shots of this event, let me know if you like that or if you prefer just the car shots in the future.

Congrats Uncle Paul, you did a great job putting on a nice little show. I hope you have great success going forward!

So I got the Galaxie out and headed down to the show. 32 seconds later, I arrived. It took longer to find a parking spot and get in it than it did to drive to the show. The show ended up with about 150 cars total, a ton of great people and I think about 100 pies. Our diner “Exit 14” and our BBQ joint “Big D’s BBQ” both were slammed busy and both ran out of some food items due to the crowds.

2015 Poverty Flats Car Show & Pie Festival Pt. 1 Brought To You By Stray Kat Kustoms

After the fun that was 800 miles, a shoot, a car show, and a wedding in 38 hours it was time to relax a bit. Thankfully I was attending a show 3 blocks from my home. My Uncle Poverty Flats’ Car Show and Pie Festival held here in Gypsum, KS was on the schedule for Sunday. Last year with 3 weeks notice we had 72 cars show up and he gave away 30+ pies as trophies. That’s right, pies as trophies. Boom. That happened.

2015 Springfield NSRA Pt. 3 Coverage Brought To You By The Backyard Garage

So the 2015 Springfield NSRA was a bit down from what I hear. Still tons of great rides as you’ve seen in the last two posts. And yes I did make it to Tulsa to the wedding, actually I ended up getting there an hour early. Then some storms moved in and I wasn’t able to leave until 10pm, putting me home at 2am Sunday. 800 or so miles in 38 hours, plus the show, the shoot, and a kick butt wedding.

Sunday I woke up and went to the Poverty Flats Car Show & Pie Festival, coverage of that starts tomorrow!

2015 Springfield NSRA Pt. 2 Coverage Brought To You By The Backyard Garage

As luck would have it for me the weekend of the 2015 Springfield NSRA event was the same weekend as a buddy’s wedding in Tulsa. Now… those two cities are 3 hours apart, so you might think that doesn’t sound all that lucky. I found a way. Getting down to the Joplin area on Friday night around midnight gave me the chance to get over to Springfield in the morning. Unfortunately, the weather made an early morning photo shoot not an option so Ryno and I headed over to Springfield. We found a location to shoot a truck for a possible magazine feature and then headed into the show. The weather had the crowd down and had the car count down too from the looks of it. That was okay for me because I needed to get finished with the show, grab lunch and be on the road by around 1pm so that I’d have time to get to the wedding early and get cleaned up.

2015 Springfield NSRA Pt. 1 Coverage Brought To You By The Backyard Garage

For the 3rd weekend in a row I’ve been walking around a car show in the rain. Most of the midwest has needed the moisture for years, so it’s welcome, just a bit much! For years I’ve been trying to get down to Springfield for the NSRA Mid-America Street Rod Nationals, the first time I was sidetracked by the relief efforts in Joplin after the devastating tornado. I couldn’t very well drive through Joplin to get to the car show when they needed so much help. This year thankfully it was just a bit of rain.
