After the National Anthem was sung and the big USA flag was unfurled over the staging lanes it was time to start the event! The OddRod and T33 recreations started us off then the banger powered cars took to the hill. It was a blast to see so many people grinning from ear to ear driving their hot rods.

After the Friday Reliability Run we headed down the mountain to the pits to see folks and check out the cars. This is one of those events that I can’t miss because of the people and the cars. It’s just a great combination. There were various events going on in the area Friday evening, but I was lucky enough to meet up with some great people and enjoy dinner. We went over to Georgetown to find a place that they’d eaten at a couple of years ago and found it closed. Oh well, it was a great drive over and the food we did find was awesome. Even the 2.5 lb burrito that was almost fully consumed looked great. (that wasn’t me, I couldn’t even try it!)

Another stop on my 48 Cars 48 States trip is the Hot Rod Hill Climb in Central City, CO. I left Cheyenne, WY on Thursday morning (you’ll see the Wyoming stop in a few days), and made the 2 hour trip to Central City. The Galaxie had some issue climbing up the mountains, got hot and spewed out some coolant so I sat there in my lawn chair and enjoyed being in the Rockies while it cooled down. I was about ½ mile from my destination though so I was at the Hot Rod Hill Climb pits in short order.
I spent Thursday afternoon hanging out with the crew and helping a little with set up, but Troy Hasting’s crew had it mostly together already. The plan was to shoot my Colorado car that afternoon but timing didn’t work out. As I type this on Sunday morning I’m getting ready to head back over to get it done now! Truthfully I have a bunch of great shots of the vehicle so I can make due with a couple of action shots that I got of it this weekend.
Friday morning started with a quick run over the mountain to Idaho Springs to put out some signs for the Reliability Run since I was going to be up on top of the mountain taking photos. Then I parked myself up there and set up to see how many cars would take the OMG Road way over the mountain. The first photos you see are from that stop.

After the Garage Krawl we reconvene at the host hotel and the Lonely Knights fire up the fajita trailer and make dinner for everyone. Then more of the parking lot hang out that I love so much.
Saturday it’s time for the show at the Kansas Aviation Museum. The cars are parked amongst the planes and they filled the grounds up pretty well this year. I don’t know a total count but like I said in part 1, it’s about quality over quantity here.
Saturday evening I had to blast up north to my home and wasn’t able to go to dinner with my club friends then go cruise Douglass Ave but it sure looked like a great time. Maybe next year!

Friday morning of the Starliner weekend is always time to get registered, get your show shirts and maps for the Friday Garage Krawl. This year we had 4 stops on the Garage Krawl, and I was only able to make one of them, you can see those photos in the 48 Cars 48 States coverage of Kansas in a couple of days. The Krawl is the perfect way to get out and drive around the city, seeing kool kustoms and hot rods running all over town, checking out what folks are working on and generally just enjoying the day without sitting all day at a show.

The Starliner weekend usually starts on Thursday evening with a big group dinner at a local Italian place for about 20 of us. Then back to the hotel so we can sit in the parking lot, have some drinks, tell some stories, and laugh so hard that it hurts. The parking lot part of this show is awesome!

My annual weekend after Labor Day is spent in Wichita, this year I was on the 48 Cars 48 States trip… and I still made it back to Wichita to hang with my Stray Kat Kustoms and Lonely Knights families. The show is small compared to many of the shows that folks have on their bucket lists, but it’s about the quality of cars and most importantly the quality of the people that attend the event. That’s what makes this simple hang out in Wichita so good. More of the story tomorrow!

The 4th and final post of the 2017 Greaserama coverage is the biggest post of the week. I hope you’ve enjoyed the photos from the 2017 Greaserama, I want to say a huge thanks to the Los Punk Rods club for putting on this show every year and for supporting my 48 Cars 48 States trip! You all rock and I appreciate it!
Tomorrow on the website you’ll see the start of the 48 Cars 48 States trip travel blog, I’m a few days ahead of the website but hopefully that keeps me ahead of the game throughout the trip.

So many of my friends are at this event it’s a wonder I got any photos shot. From artists Todd Jones, Dragdaddy, Lizzie Fenwick, Hot Rod Heuy, to Marcy from HopUp, John Wells from Iron Invasion and Vintage Torque Fest, TwoTall, to about 3 dozen others that I ran into, it was an awesome reunion.
Greaserama has a great lineup of bands and I got to listen to about 3 minutes of one of them before I had to split, as I’m typing this on Saturday evening I’m seeing Instagram posts and videos of the bands playing in the evening 5 hours behind me in KC and I wish I was still there.
More to come tomorrow.

Although I only had 4 hours to spend at the show, I got about 150 photos shot and talked with a LOT of friends along the way. It’s amazing how many non-KC friends I have that go to this show, I spent more time explaining about the 48 Cars 48 States trip and the mechanical issues that I ran into the caused me to leave the camper at home than I spent shooting photos or videos.

Today starts 4 days of coverage of the 2017 Greaserama! The 17th annual Labor Day weekend event in the KC area was a blast, even though I wasn’t able to stay long. By the time this post goes up on the site I’ll be well into the first week of my 48 Cars 48 States trip, this was my first stop of the trip. After a small going away party at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS on Friday evening, I got up early Saturday and got the car ready to take off.
The trip was uneventful, my favorite kind of trip. 3hours later I rolled into the Platte County Fairgrounds in Tracy, MO on Saturday morning and found a place to park. The fairgrounds were filling up fast so I grabbed a couple of cameras & got to work. More of the story tomorrow!

While in the middle of my 48 Cars 48 States trip I’ll be attending a few shows, one that I’m glad to have on the list is the Iron Invasion in Woodstock, IL. The show is on Oct. 7th and is always a good time. I was able to attend the show a couple of times, this time I’ll be just up the road, a lot better than the 18 hour round trip drive, but the drive was still worth it.

Sept. 15-16, 2017 will mark my 4th trip to the Hot Rod Hill Climb, now held in Central City, CO. I missed the first one, and from that day and the photos I saw from the event I vowed that I’d be there the next year. I haven’t missed one again.
Last year was the first year for the HRHC to be in Central City, a change that many were worried would ruin the event. Yes, it was different from the previous location, Georgetown, where the original event happened in 1953. But in the end I think it’s a pretty perfect spot. There is a return road so the event can run continuously and folks can take as many passes as they can line up for. There are around 2000 hotel rooms within a couple of miles. The town actually wants us there. It’s a great venue and I’m glad to see the event returning to Central City.

For the 4th and Final post of the 2017 H.A.M.B. Drags coverage I was in the staging lanes and hanging out at the starting line. So much great stuff at the H.A.M.B. Drags! I hope you’ve enjoyed the coverage!

Each time we gather at MoKan for the H.A.M.B. Drags I’m amazed at what shows up. There are some mainstays that come back each year but every year there are some machines that I’ve never seen before. Those new cars are just part of the reason that I return each year. The folks that drive them are the real reason to go back year after year. Seeing Jhole’s new blown FE in his Model A, or Patrick’s “Panty Dropper” dragster, both awesome machines, but the time in the pits getting to BS with folks is what makes the 8 hour drive worth it.

For many years I would leave home Thursday evening of the H.A.M.B. Drags weekend so that I could go over to Springfield, MO for the swap meet there. It’s a ritual for many, a huge swap meet where someone always finds a deal. This year I blasted down and back for the day, not wanting to spend any of my travel money on a hotel room. So it was an up at 5:30am rolling by 6:30 am and back home by 7pm with 500 miles and 250 photos in between kinda day.

2017 marks the 7th time that I’ve made the trek to MOKAN Dragway in Asbury, MO for the H.A.M.B. Drags. The H.A.M.B. Drags is a day of drag racing and a reason for folks to travel from across the country, and some times across the world to gather up and hang out with friends from the H.A.M.B. This weekend I wanted to spend some time with my Dad and nephews, so I gathered them up and went to a small show. I took my camera but I spent more time being an uncle instead of shooting photos. Lucky for me and all of you I had my friend Iona Bel Air take her camera to the 2017 Slamboree at the Grand Casino Resort in Shawnee, OK and she snapped a few shots for us all to check the show out. Make sure to go like her page on Facebook and tell her thanks for the photos!

Friday was a great day at the show, I spent the day hanging out with friends and shooting some cars as you can see here. In the evening I skipped the drags so that I could go to the Hall of Fame ceremony at the host hotel. KKOA President Jerry Titus asked up a few members of the Hall Of Fame and had them give their picks awards. At the end of the evening Kelly Pucket and Alex Gambino were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Congrats!
