While I had a great time in the few hours I was able to spend at the Cars For Charity show I had my fill of the show in that time frame too. I got to sit and talk with some friends, see some amazing machines and walk by a lot of cars that just aren’t my thing. I hope next year I can have one of my cars changed enough that I can feel okay putting it back in the show.

It’s been my feeling for awhile that you shouldn’t put your car into the same indoor show year after year without changing SOMETHING about it. There’s a ton of great cars in the area that could be in the event and have it change up each year. The feature cars that come in are OUTSTANDING, it’s time to every couple of years get some other clubs to bring some different rides in. Same goes for outdoor events, if you haven’t changed a thing on your car, at least park in a different spot each year!

Enough ranting, this is supposed to be about this show. It’s a great show, it’s a great way to get through the winter months and get pumped up to get your ride ready for Spring and the money raised goes to some good causes. I hope you enjoyed my coverage of the cars that I dug from the show.

I can’t honestly say how many times I’ve attended this show. It’s name has changed over the 61 years from the time that Darryl Starbird started it, now the show is called Cars for Charity, but it’s still the Wichita Tradition.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had a car in the show, and it’s a whole different experience just blowing into town to shoot photos and leave. I got to spend some time with some good friends and have a beer or two while sitting in between the cars and hanging out.

On the way from Walt Disney World to Louisiana for my 48 Cars 48 States I stopped to check out the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing  in Ocala, FL. I had passed by the museum back in 2002 when I was in Florida and I’d wished that I could have stopped since. I wasn’t going to drive by this time!

When I hopped out of the Galaxie I met Chris Bumpus who is the shop foreman in the restoration shop at the museum. He was kind enough to give me a behind the scenes look at some what was going on there. That was awesome! The museum is amazing and be prepared to be there for a few hours, you’ll need it!

Pistons & Paint is always a great time, there are tons of great cars, most of my north Texas car family shows up so there’s great people, and the music is always good too. This year Junior Brown played, it’s awesome to see shows put the time and effort into getting great bands to play at their events.

Like most of the last few years the sky was a bland grey cover instead of blue and clear, which means I could shoot photos from any direction but it also means that the sky in the photos is pretty blah. I wonder if it kept any cars away? The fairgrounds seemed pretty full but I always wonder what has an effect on show attendance. I have a great time at Pistons & Paint each year so that’s why I keep coming back.

On the way down to Texas I stopped in Wichita and picked up my buddy Sprout from the Primarys Car Club, it was good to have a copilot for a trip after so many miles rolling solo on the big trip! We rolled into Denton around 9am on Saturday and immediately saw Ryno’s Caddy, Mike Weaver’s coupe, Brian Bass’ roadster and a ton more familiar rides.

I’d been home from my 48Cars48States trip for less than a week when I hopped back in the Galaxie to take off for Denton, TX for Pistons & Paint. I made it about 20 miles before I lost a wheel bearing & somehow lost front brakes at the same time. A call later lined up a ride home on the trailer and I hopped in my daily drive so I could continue my trip down to Texas!

As I walked around the infield of the Charlotte Motor Speedway I ran into Chris Ryan of Ryan’s Rod & Kustom in SC, he and his wife Lori would be my hosts for my SC stop the next day. Chris has been a guest on my Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes podcast a couple of times, you can hear one here.

I was able to also meet another Chrome Pipes guest in person for the first time. Brent VanDervort of Fatman Fabrications, hear that episode here. It’s great when you meet folks in this industry who are as nice as they seem.

We also ran into a 3rd Chrome Pipes guest, Mr. Tim Strange. Tim is often found at Goodguys events manning the mic at the autocross, hear his episode here.

I had a blast walking around the speedway, seeing the cars, seeing friends old and new. After all of that it was time to head north to Concord, NC to shoot my car for NC then try some NC style BBQ! More on that story in a few days!

Continue reading “2017 Goodguys Southeastern Nationals Pt 3”

The trip down from Virginia was uneventful, half of it in the dark after shooting photos in Richmond then having a great burger with my Virginia car owner and his family. I drove a couple of hours until I hit the NC border then got a hotel room, finishing the drive the next morning. When I got to the Charlotte Motor Speedway I was impressed with the layout. A dirt track across the road, the garages are sunken down in the infield so you can see the far side of the race track better, it was cool to be able to stand on the track that so many great battles have been fought on over the years.

The show was held at a playground on a ball diamond. It was a great location with plenty of room due to the weather. A couple of hours after I got there the mist started and it just drove a ton of cars away.

A few people told me that while I was out east I had to stop in at the Gathering Of The Faithful. So I took their advice and rolled out of my NH buddy Jay Sweet’s place and drove down through Boston, which was pretty cool to see finally, then on to Middleboro, MA. The GPS lead me to the show and I was directed in pretty quickly. I really didn’t know much about the show but found a cool collection of all new to me cars.

The 90 minutes of rain that came late in the day gathered most of the folks at the show up into the buildings. Which meant I headed in to one of them to hang with some artist buddies of mine. Ed Tillrock, Todd Jones, James Owens, Jason Mattox were all in one building so I bugged them all. Even got a couple of them to come on the podcast to BS for a few minutes.

My buddy Luke is a member of the Wisconsin chapter of the Vagabonds CC and he told me to be sure to stay around for the awards. So it wasn’t much of a surprise when I was asked to bring the car up to the stage for the awards. I was sure they were going to embarrass me somehow but it wasn’t too bad. I want to say a huge thanks to John Wells and the Wisconsin Vagabonds for the kind words and especially to the Vagabonds for the award. You guys are awesome! Also thanks to Dan Podobinski for shooting a couple of photos of me getting the award.

Continue reading “2017 Iron Invasion Pt 4”

It was about 90 minutes to get over to Woodstock to the McHenry County Fairgrounds for the Iron Invasion. Our group got separated and one car in one of the groups ended up breaking down but we eventually got the rest of the cars together and I followed the Romin’ Chariots in and parked at the end of their row. Thanks guys for letting me tag along!

The forecast for the day had been bleak all week long so seeing some sprinkles when we got there wasn’t terribly unexpected but they didn’t last long. Actually it was a few hours of good weather before some rain came through mid afternoon, but I think the folks at the show had a great day even with a little moisture later in the day.

After shooting my Illinois car (which you’ll see on the site next week) I made my way over to my buddy Scott’s place to wind down for a day. The 48 Cars 48 States trip has days built in to make up for when weather doesn’t treat me right or for when breakdowns occur and Oct. 6th was one of those days. It was great to hang out and relax for the afternoon on Friday after spending 4 hours fighting the driver’s side exhaust manifold while putting the new gasket in.

Then Saturday morning we got up and drove a ways before meeting up with some other members of the Romin’ Chariots CC. Then it was off to Woodstock, IL for the Iron Invasion. I’ve been blessed to meet some awesome people on this trip and these folks were more of those great ones.

The 5th and Final day of the Hot Rod Hill Climb Coverage from me is here! This is one HUGE post, close to 200 images in it in total. I can’t say this strongly enough, if you love traditional hot rods, you need to attend this event. There are 2000 hotel rooms at the various casinos in the area plus Denver is only about an hour away so you can fly in, attend the event and enjoy the city if you don’t want to bring a car.

Thanks to Mike and Amy and Troy and his crew (and anyone else involved) for a great weekend. I had a blast and I hated to leave on Sunday.

The OddRod and T33 recreations started us off then the banger powered cars took to the hill. It was a blast to see so many people grinning from ear to ear driving their hot rods.

After the Friday Reliability Run we headed down the mountain to the pits to see folks and check out the cars. This is one of those events that I can’t miss because of the people and the cars. It’s just a great combination. There were various events going on in the area Friday evening, but I was lucky enough to meet up with some great people and enjoy dinner. We went over to Georgetown to find a place that they’d eaten at a couple of years ago and found it closed. Oh well, it was a great drive over and the food we did find was awesome. Even the 2.5 lb burrito that was almost fully consumed looked great. (that wasn’t me, I couldn’t even try it!)

Another stop on my 48 Cars 48 States trip is the Hot Rod Hill Climb in Central City, CO. I left Cheyenne, WY on Thursday morning (you’ll see the Wyoming stop in a few days), and made the 2 hour trip to Central City. The Galaxie had some issue climbing up the mountains, got hot and spewed out some coolant so I sat there in my lawn chair and enjoyed being in the Rockies while it cooled down. I was about ½ mile from my destination though so I was at the Hot Rod Hill Climb pits in short order.

I spent Thursday afternoon hanging out with the crew and helping a little with set up, but Troy Hasting’s crew had it mostly together already. The plan was to shoot my Colorado car that afternoon but timing didn’t work out. As I type this on Sunday morning I’m getting ready to head back over to get it done now! Truthfully I have a bunch of great shots of the vehicle so I can make due with a couple of action shots that I got of it this weekend.

Friday morning started with a quick run over the mountain to Idaho Springs to put out some signs for the Reliability Run since I was going to be up on top of the mountain taking photos. Then I parked myself up there and set up to see how many cars would take the OMG Road way over the mountain. The first photos you see are from that stop.
