1 Month Warning: KKOA Hotrodding Hullabaloo – Denison, TX

SUPER SIZED POST! FULL OF PHOTOS!

Last year I made my first ever trip to Denison, TX for the KKOA Hotrodding Hullabaloo. Like the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, KS the event has some Run What Ya Brung Drags on Friday. The show this year looks to be a great time too, I wish I could make it but the new Sept. 27-29 dates for the show conflicts with another event that I will be attending.

Just down the street and around the corner from the show are my buddies at Atlas Speed & Custom, get ahold of them if you get down to the show, they have a lot of kool going on.

It was unusually chilly in North Texas on the Friday of last year’s show, here are some pics from the Drags held at a local airstrip west of Denison.

Later that evening I went over to a local watering hole to see my buddies in the band Pushrod rock the house. Waaaaay too early the next morning I was up and at em again and headed over to the park for the show. I was greeted with a bunch of familiar faces from my adventures up here in KS and OK, and a bunch of new to me folks too. The show was small, laid back and really perfect for spending time with friends telling tall tails and talking kustoms.

All in all, I had a damn good time, well worth the 12 hours it took to drive there and back! If not for the previously mentioned scheduling conflict I would be going back this year for sure. If you can make it to the show, get there, enjoy some kool kustoms and hot rods and of course hanging out with each other!

See you at a show,

Event Coverage: 2013 Clutch Rod And Custom Open House

So one day not too long ago I get invited on Facebook to an Open House at a shop I didn’t know in Wichita, KS. The open house was the same day as another event that I was attending a few blocks away so it’s a no brainer that I’m going to stop in if at all possible.  Clutch Rod And Custom at 406 S. Market in Wichita, KS was the shop. I’m glad I stopped in.  As I’m told, the shop is an old Mercury dealership, I’d love to see the spacious facility filled with bathtub Mercs! The front display room had a couple of cars in it and every available surface was covered in art by different kulture artists. The cars on display in the shop were top notch, I didn’t get much chance to talk to the folks at the shop as they were busy running the Open House, but I did get to spend some time with my good buddy Ben Dragdaddy (facebook) and his lovely wife and my fellow photographer and buddy Grant Cox. I expect you to go to their pages on FB and follow their feeds, you won’t be disappointed.

Here are some photos from the evening.

Thanks to Clutch Rod And Custom for the food, the music and some good times of hot rod/kustom fellowship with some old friends.

See you at a show,

1 Month Warning: Rumble – Wichita, KS

Coming up September 28th in Wichita, KS is the 6th annual Rumble (formerly the Rumble in Delano)! The show has a new venue this year, moving to the street where some of the first kustom kulture art shows in the area were held at the Go Away Garage.
This show has been a lot of fun to attend over the last few years, the date’s changed and now the venue but I have a feeling the show will continue to get better and better.

The show runs from 1pm to 8pm and  will be at 508 S Commerce St. in Downtown Wichita, KS. There will be hot rods, kustoms, bikes and more on display. The Pin-up Pagent is open to ladies 18 and up and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, go here for more info. 4 bands will take the stage at various points in the event including Sucker, Callahan Band, TheTerminals & The Trip Daddy’s. Event Coverage: 2013 Blacktop Nationals Part 1

The 4th Annual Blacktop Nationals went down this weekend Aug. 23-25 in Wichita, KS. Based in the area of Century II in downtown Wichita the show stretches out across the Arkansas River to the west and to the south of Century II as well.  The show welcomes all kinds of vehicles and has them out in the streets and inside of Century II as well. A road course is set up to the south of Century II for some ride alongs in new Ford Mustangs. Ford is one of the major sponsors of the show, and they go all out bringing their “circus” to town with new rides of all flavors.

You don’t see these very often.

The show judges the cars on the engine compartments, that’s why they all are open,  yes I know it ruins photos and no there’s nothing that can be done about it.

A fun little roadster.

A clean 58 Chevrolet

I liked this Vette alot.

Mike’s newest build, a clean east coast style 34 Ford with all pre-53 parts except the 59 steering wheel, “it’s just too kool to not have on it.”

The cleanest shoebox in the area. So well done, so clean.

That’s it for the first installment. If you want to see the entire gallery go here. Tomorrow morning at the normal 9am time we’ll have a new update!

H.A.M.B. Drags Art

From time to time while I’m doing my  normal car show coverage I’ll take an extra second and do some multiple exposure shots. When I get time I merge these HDR shots for a bit of a different look from normal. Mostly I try to keep them fairly realistic looking but occasionally I will get a bit wild. Here are some from the H.A.M.B. Drags. Remember if any of these shots are something that would look good on your living room or garage wall, click the photo to go to the shopping cart and order any size you’d like.

Mike and Daddy-O from Pushrod (and Atlas Speed & Custom)

This looks like a good time…

Dick’s Chevy is simple and clean and a driving machine.

Stray Kat Kustoms (Mickey) has just about finished his 60 Chevy with 60 Merc Grill as his daily driver.

Early Saturday morning after a hearty breakfast I roamed the parking lot a bit before heading out.

Here’s my buddy Rick’s new shoebox.

A whole lotta kool in the host hotel parking lot.

On the way to MO-KAN Dragway we stopped by Ryno Built for a coffee and donuts open house.

A few cars were taking advantage of the shop, like Jason swapping his slicks on.

Others gathered to help a friend 1/2 a country from home.

Then Jason tacked his grill support bracket back in place.

150 miles each way and consistent 10 second passes all day. Mike had a good debut weekend for the Henry J.

The next stop is the track for the main event!

Event Coverage : 2013 H.A.M.B. Drags Weekend Part 1

Another HAMB Drags weekend has come and gone.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

As usual for this event I decided to leave my ride at home and catch a ride with my folks down to Joplin. With all of the travel that I do, it’s good to spend a couple of those weekends a year with them on the road. As I loaded my bags into the back of the truck the rain was pouring down in our little town. We headed south as quick as we could to try to outrun the storm. The route between Gypsum, KS and Joplin, MO has a few turns so every time we out ran the storm we made a turn and drove right back into it for the first 2 hours or so of the trip. 15 or 20 miles in a massive hail storm and torrential downpours were lowlights of Thursday evening’s drive.

Friday morning we assembled some of our friends and headed for Springfield, MO for the swap meet. The Ozarks Antique Auto Club Swap Meet is massive. There is no other way to describe it really. The car corral is usually loaded with good buys and some that are a bit over priced. There are top notch vendors from across the country and a truly staggering amount of individual sellers covering the fairgrounds. I didn’t find anything that I couldn’t live without, actually I had my heart set on an Offenhauser 4bbl intake for my flathead and some matching heads, but some new Royboy computer upgrades had that cash spoken for. Ahhhh, maybe next year.

Then it was back to the host hotel area for the Friday Night pre-party! Tons of folks drove their rides from all over the country to attend the drags and the pre-party. Music was provided by my friends Pushrod and they rocked the party like non-other.

To see all of the photos in the gallery go here.

Then it was off to bed to get up for Saturday’s shenanigans, more about those tomorrow.

Royboy’s August Schedule

June and July are the slow times for me, just a couple of shows to hit and lots of weekends that I’m not on the road, it drives me crazy to sit at home that much. Mid August is when the schedule ramps back up and runs nearly without a weekend off until around Thanksgiving.

For me in 2013 it starts back up at the H.A.M.B. Drags held in Asbury, MO at the MO-KAN  Dragway on Aug. 17th. We usually show up to the hotel in Joplin on the 15th, head to Springfield, MO to a swap meet on the 16th and then it’s all day long at the drags on the 17th.

The next weekend has been the Blacktop Nationals in Wichita for the past 3 years. Last year I arrived to Wichita in a torrential downpour. Something that I did not think my camera would enjoy so I effectively skipped the show last year. But the previous two I was there and here’s some of what I saw. This year the event goes down on Aug. 24th.

2011 Blacktop Nationals  0030
2011 Blacktop Nationals  0086
2011 Blacktop Nationals  0103

Following that is Aug. 31 and the Labor Day weekend goodness that is the Greaserama in the KC area (Tracy, MO to be exact). I’ve been attending the Greaserama since before my car could make the drive somewhere around 2007 or so, I’ve always had a good time and I’ve always wished it wasn’t over when it was.

That’s it for what’s coming up in August on the Royboy Schedule. If you will be at any of these events or on my way to or from them and  you want a custom photo shoot of your vehicle, book a shoot with me then to save $ since I can combine the travel, shoot me an email for more details.

See you at a show,

A look ahead: 2013 H.A.M.B. Drags

 2012 H.A.M.B. Drags Weekend 0053-M

5 weeks from now folks from all over the country will be rolling towards Joplin, MO to assemble for the 2013 H.A.M.B. Drags

For the last few years (2012, 2011, 2010) I’ve been heading down to the time capsule that is MO-KAN Dragway in Asbury, MO between Joplin, MO and Pittsburg, KS.

This year the H.A.M.B. Drags are going down on Aug. 17th, many like to get to Joplin early and head and hour or so east on Friday the 16th to check out the huge swap meet. So if you’re going to make the trip to the drags you might as well head over and see if you can snag a deal on that one part you need.
So book your room, plan your time off of work and I’ll see you at the H.A.M.B. DragsRoyboy

My 1951 Ford Custom: Resurrection Part 1

My 1951 Ford Custom: Resurrection Part 1

1951 Ford  0004

On Memorial Day 2012 my father, my nephew Gannon and I went to Kanopolis Lake about 40 miles west of Salina, KS with the truck and trailer to pick up my 1951 Ford Custom 2 Door Sedan. I’m hoping to do as much of this car as possible myself, and I’m no mechanic. This will be a challenge but I hope to show a bunch of you that you can tackle these jobs involved in bringing an old car back to life if you break them down into small jobs.

1951 Ford  0001

From the outside the car looks to be all there. While it wont start and the previous owner said that he drove it from Salina to the lake home, he said it was missing on a couple of cylinders by the time that he got to the lake.

After a quick hose down I see that the weather stripping is not doing it’s job, so I pull back the carpet where the water had dripped to see what was underneath and I find a flattened out Folgers Coffee can as a floor patch. No biggie the floors can be replaced.

The paint looks decent for the most part, probably a 70’s era re-spray, the trunk was in the sun for 8 years so it’s rather oxidized and faded. After a year, I finally got a space cleaned out in my garage at home and I drug the car home so that I could start to tinker with her and see if I could bring the ol flathead back to life. The factory front grille was removed to go on my buddy Jack’s 51 Ford Kustom that he’s just finished with the help of Chaotic Customs, Fast A.L.’s Upholstery and others, and it will be replaced with a 54 Pontiac grille that I have.

Wanting to do things myself as much as possible but knowing when to call in an expert, I had a friend rebuild the factory carb, if I had done that myself it would be months before I did it. So now with a new carb and a freshly charged battery I try to start the old girl. No go. Not getting a drop of fuel out of the fuel pump even though the bowl on the pump is full. A trip to O’Reillys and a new fuel pump is on the way. So next up is to swap the fuel pump and try her again.

Once the car is running and I can take it for the occasional drive up and down the block it’s time to save up for a wiring harness. The 60 year old cloth covered wiring is in bad need of replacement. In the mean time I have a set of Ford Aerostar springs for the front which will bring the front end down about 3 inches and give the car a better ride quality, for the rear my buddy Jack has given me a set of blocks to get the altitude right.

Power washing the gunk off the bottom of the car

Another upgrade that I hope to do soon is installing a 77 Ford Maverick rear end, from everything that I’ve read it’s a near perfect fit and a much higher quality rear end with a better suited gear than the factory setup. The 3 speed with OD should mate well with the new rear gears. Before I can install that I need to get a lesson in how to rebuild brakes so I can finish the Maverick rear end before it goes under the car.

Event Coverage: 2013 MotorMania Part 2

Part 2!!!

Wow, talk about ruining all of the lines of the car by having everything open… I should have looked to see if the damn gas door was open too.
That’s it for what I saw at the Motor Mania show.
See you at a show, keep our friends in Oklahoma in your thoughts, prayers, mojo, good vibes, postive energy, whatever it is that you believe in. Those folks need any good stuff they can get.

Event Coverage: 2013 MotorMania

For the 2nd time I made the long drive (okay it was only 30 miles) over to Abilene, KS for their MotorMania show. Most of the cars had their hoods and a few trunks open, which means I don’t really want to shoot photos of them. Here are a few shots of what I saw.
More tomorrow, see you at a show,

Limited Edition Poster #1 IN STOCK!

Okay the time has come!

First I need to say thanks to all of the folks that pre-ordered! You make stuff like this possible! As a reward, when Poster #2 comes out, you will be given first option to purchase, at the #1 pre-order price of $10 shipped. After that the regular pre-order will happen for 2 weeks and finally it will go on regular sale like this one does today! Now, on with the announcement!

Now in stock is the Limited Edition Royboy Poster #1. Only 50 copies of this poster will ever be made, they will be hand numbered, and half are already gone in just 2 weeks!

This poster image will be as seen below without the giant RB of course.  Jack’s 29 Roadster that I’ve talked so much about in the past (even made a video about it). The poster will be 11×17 sized and suitable for framing if you’d like but it’d look great on your garage wall just as it is. This 29 Roadster on 32 rails was built in the mid 50’s and it’s never been changed. It is pure traditional hot rodding.

This is the poster image, the poster WILL NOT HAVE THE RB logo across it.

Here’s the first 25 orders getting ready for me to ship them!

The posters are in stock now and shipping, order today before they are all gone!

Weird and wild and I kinda dig it.

That’s it for my coverage, I’ll go back and add some more edits of some of the images and I’ll have a special post of them next week maybe.

Don’t forget about the limited edition poster pre-sale going on right now.

See you at a show,
