It had been far too long since we’d all been in Dewey, OK for the 20th Try at the Stray Kat 500. The Stray Kat Kustoms crew really put on a great show as always with tons of great cars, and most of my favorite people from the regions. Friends from my Lonely Knights club in Colorado were on hand, as well as a bunch of folks from TX, AR, KS, MO, OK and a couple other states.

The small town of Dewey, OK is about 20 miles south of the Kansas border on US Highway 75, it’s just outside of Bartlesville, OK where Phillips 66 was founded. The show takes over the downtown area of the tiny town and fills the streets with a few hundred hot rods, customs, and drag cars, the show is advertised as a pre-1964ish show, and for the most part people follow that guideline. A few folks show up with their later year vehicles and they aren’t shunned, but everyone knows that the focus of the show is the pre-64 hot rod and custom crowd.

Fellow Lonely Knight members the Johnsons from Calhan, CO drove this killer Chrysler wagon to come hang out with us.  Click this photo to see the full photo gallery!

Friday always starts with reliability runs for the folks that show up early enough to go on them, although over the years the crowd on Friday has grown to the point that they will overwhelm any of the places that the run could go. To alleviate this rolling traffic jam of awesome cars there are now a handful of locations to head to and people can come and go as they please. This makes for a pretty cool day cruising the backroads of Oklahoma seeing tons of great cars everywhere you go.

Steve Dale’s 58 Ford is just kool. I love this car and have had a few fun road trips following it across the state and back. Click this photo to see the full photo gallery!

The show kicks off Saturday morning with cars starting to roll in early (we can stop that guys, it just robs us of sleep!!!). Cars rolled in slow this year due to some storms in the area, but the rain never materialized and by 10 am the place was filling in nicely. The temp got up to about 85 degrees which felt pretty good after a chilly week, right up until the wind picked up in the afternoon.

Sunday the show started a little slowly because a cold front came through Saturday night, it was downright cold! Quite a few folks head home after the show on Saturday, but the host hotel parking lot was still pretty full Saturday night. Sunday is always bittersweet at this show, I enjoy having more time to talk with my friends but we all always know that it’s nearly over.

If you haven’t made it to a Stray Kat 500 in Dewey, OK, you need to! The show goes down the first full weekend of May each year. If you come to the show, make sure you stop by the Lonely Knights parking area and say hi!
