Over the years the Stray Kat 500 has had all sorts of weather, this year it could only be described as perfect. Okay from the photography stand point it could have been better but other than that it was amazing. The small town atmosphere of Dewey was perfect for a show that happened on Mother’s Day weekend. For those that brought the mom in their lives Dewey had them covered with great antique stores. I finally went into the Linger Longer store and had a chocolate shake from their soda fountain, that will be on my to do list next year… and any time I roll through Dewey on the way to Tulsa!

Welcome to part 6 of my Vintage Torque Fest coverage! As you can see in the photos it had started to rain by this point in the morning. While the threat of rain had been in the forecast all week long, the percentages just kept climbing with each day that passed. Hopefully you can tell from the photos that there were still a ton of cars and people in Dubuque for the weekend. Yesterday I showed you some of the chain racing carnage, that was so much fun. If you don’t know what it is, two cars are tied together with cables, the front car has the engine, but no brakes. The rear car has brakes but no engine, and as you could see yesterday the driver of the rear car couldn’t see much just a couple of laps in to the race. Today I have some shots of the flame show that went on afterwards. It was a great way to warm up on a chilly night. After that you’ll see some of the shots from Saturday before it started raining.

In this 4th post of the Vintage Torque Fest coverage we continue through the parking lot on Friday evening and then venture into the 2 buildings. Lots of great cars outside and inside. I was beat but someone suggested that I stay around for the chain racing out on the dirt track. It was cold, I wasn’t dressed for it but hey, I’ve never seen it before. What the hell, I’ll stay. In the couple of years since I was able to attend Vintage Torque Fest the show has changed venue. That makes 3 pretty dang cool county fairgrounds that the show has been held at, I’m honestly not sure that we have such cool fairgrounds here in Kansas. John Wells and company put on one jam packed weekend full of fun. In addition to the car show area that you see in these photos, there’s a huge swap meet area, a parking area for cars that don’t fit the criteria of the show, 2 stages for live music and pinups, an indoor show area full of killer cars and artists and the dirt track!

After a rainy start to my 575 mile drive, I got to Dubuque around 4pm. About 30 seconds after getting out of the car I went back and got a hoodie, 42 degrees and a light wind… not what I was hoping for. The skies were dark but the rain wasn’t there yet. I walked the show and shot as many photos as I could on Friday because I was concerned about the forecast for Saturday. There were still a lot of great cars and more importantly great people at Vintage Torque Fest. More from Friday tomorrow!

It’s been a few years since I could attend Vintage Torque Fest. The first and second years of the show I was there and had a great time, then the dates didn’t line up and I had to watch from afar but that changed in 2016. The weather forecast didn’t look fantastic and when it came time to roll out in the Galaxie, she let me down for the first time. So a quick phone call later I had arranged to borrow a daily driver to make the trip. 8 hours later I was in Dubuque, IA and it was time to enjoy the 2016 Vintage Torque Fest photo coverage!

Saturday at the 2016 Lonestar Round Up was probably the biggest day I’ve ever seen at the show. Even with a few rain showers coming through the area from time to time all day, the crowd seemed strong and the cars were into parts of the grounds that I’ve never seen cars in before.

One of the many great things about the Lonestar Round Up is that cars come from across the country and even from other countries to attend. You get to see some of the best kustoms and hot rods from everywhere. There have been more and more off topic cars, which is troubling. Overall the quality of the cars is still good even with the off topic rides. Let me make it clear, I don’t care what you drive but when a show’s guidelines specifically say for traditionally inspired hot rods and kustoms I’ll never understand why people bring cars that do not fit that description. As a wise man once said you wouldn’t take a Corvair to a Corvette show.

So far the 2016 Lonestar Round Up trip has been a ton of fun. After work on Wednesday I hopped in the Galaxie and headed south. I stopped in Maize, KS and picked up a 34 Ford radiator that I’m delivering to someone at the Round Up and then pointed the Galaxie south again and hammered down. By 1:15 Thursday morning I got to my hotel and sacked out for a few hours. Starting the Thursday drive south of the traffic in the Dallas Fort Worth area is a huge boost to getting the day started right. After a stop at Magnolia Market in Waco to pick up some shirts and stuff I made it down to the Meatheads CC Pre Lonestar Round Up. Let me tell you about this BBQ, amazing food, great live music tons of cool cars and people… okay that was much easier to explain than I thought when I started the sentence.
