This past weekend (April 26, 2014) was the 3rd Annual Throttle Jockey Car Show & Drags in Herington, KS. I’ve known a few members of the Throttle Jockey club for awhile and I’ve been bummed to have missed the first two shows due to a busy schedule. Herington has the perfect business district for a car show, the main highway was moved out of the city decades ago so there was no issue with the city blocking off the main drag for the show. Registration was 8-10 and the show went to 12 then the crowd moved to the Herington Regional Airport, an old WWII airfield east of Herington out in the sticks.
One of the runways of the old airfield has been converted to an 1/8th mile drag strip. The city of Herington has a big history with railroads and that’s evident with the railroad tie barriers that were separating the track from the crowds. That was some serious protection! The pics of the drags will come but we’ll start with the shots of the show.

What if a race shop in the late 50’s to early 60’s wanted to build up their shop truck a bit? That was the question Steve Thomason asked himself when he began to build his daily driven 1952 Chevrolet pickup. He carefully selected parts and set out to build a truck that would be at home in a race shop as a parts hauler.
This weekend’s event is a small town show/drag race, check in on Monday to see the photos.
See you at a show,

With no major plans on my schedule for last weekend, I was excited when my buddy Jack said that he was having a small intimate get together at his place in honor of some family that were going to be in town for the Easter Weekend. This was not to be a big deal, just a few of his Mulvane Marauders friends and some family and me.
So… I loaded up my cameras and headed for Wichita. 1st stop was at Deville’s Barbershop in downtown Wichita. After a quick trim I was on my way to Jack’s place.
See you at a show,

Usually I post a few days worth of coverage of an event from my camera, so when I was given the opportunity to post 2 days of coverage of the SW MO Hot Rod Hundred by two different people, I jumped at it! Thanks to Quentin Brown of artdirectorandhotrodder.com for these great photos of the Southwest Missouri Hot Rod Hundred!
I had attended the Route Scout for the Hot Rod Hundred with my co-worker Curtis Green back in October. The route we scouted took us up through Willard, the Stockton Lake area and a stop at the historic Rt.66 gas station in Spencer, Mo. We took the same route this time but ended the drive in Crane, Mo with a chili lunch that was provided by BenD and his family.
The whole Hot Rod Hundred event was an amazing time. I don’t think I would change one thing about the entire event. Overall we went 224.7 miles in the roadster and it ran like a sewing machine the entire way. ”

Last Friday I shared some photos from my buddy Cory McMahon from his trip to the Lonestar Roundup. Over the weekend he went on the Southwest Missouri version of the Hot Rod Hundred. I was bummed that I couldn’t go, now that I see his photos I’m downright depressed! Cory has been gracious to share over 100 photos with us of his adventure on the Hot Rod Hundred. As a special bonus tomorrow we’ll have another look at the Hot Rod Hundred from another participant. Find Cory on Facebook here or on Instagram here.

This past weekend was the southwest Missouri edition of the Hot Rod Hundred reliability run hosted by Bret Chrismer and the Crossmembers CC. This was the second of the 5 events held across the country and it was a huge success. Each event consists of the same idea, a 100-ish mile reliability run, yet each one is different.
The southwest Missouri run ended up being almost 150 miles. We started off leaving the legion hall in Springfield at 9 and made our way north to Lake Stockton for our first stop. Then we made our way around the lake and headed south. A couple stops later brought us to a section of old Route 66 for some awesome photo ops in front of a cool old gas station. We then got back on the highway and headed to Crane, MO, for chili and hot dogs. The event was fantastic and a huge success with over 70 cars in attendance from Iowa all the way down to Dallas. Big Ken from Dallas got the “Long Haul” award that I pinstriped up on one of Bret’s old Moon disc covers. Ken drove 1000 miles round trip in his 33 pickup. He’s awesome.
There’s still a few more Hot Rod Hundred’s you can attend this year. The north Texas and Oklahoma City run’s are on June 14 with the two runs meeting up for a joint picnic, and the St. Louis run is October 11. Do yourself a favor check out the Hot Rod Hundred on the H.A.M.B. and hit up one of these reliability runs if you’re in the area. They’re a blast. Congrats to Bret and the Crossmembers for hosting such a fine event.
Click on any of the photos to go see the entire gallery. Thanks for sharing your photos with us Cory! Folks to connect with Cory, the best place is to look him up on facebook here.

I get asked all the time by people to go to all kinds of shows and events across the Midwest. One of those events that I had heard about for a couple of years I finally made it to back in 2012. The small Kansas town of Atwood is just about as far north and west as you can be and still be in Kansas, but I keep crossing paths with the town. First a few years ago I ended up dating a woman that was from there, later I find out that a buddy’s wife is from there and they moved their family back to Atwood after living in Salina for awhile.
Some time after they moved to Atwood, Ryan texted me that I needed to come up to the Atwood Early Rod Run that is held each May. Finally, I made the 3.5 hour trip out to the edge of the central time zone. I had a great time at the show, saw mostly new to me cars and just barely missed the drags due to weather. I wasn’t able to make in in 2013 but I do plan on getting back to Atwood a month from now.

As if I didn’t post enough on the Lonestar Roundup last week… But Cory’s pics are just too cool to not share them with you! Cory took a fixed 35mm lens with a super low aperture which gave him the opportunity to get some fantastic photos from the weekend. While I was there to cover the show for you, Cory was there to just take some great photos, and he has done just that! Find Cory on Facebook here or on Instagram here.
Without any further ado, here are Cory’s awesome pics from the event. They are a reminder to me that I need to keep pushing my boundaries and pull my fixed lens back out of the bag every once in awhile! I’m experimenting with a new style of showing off photos here, CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO SEE IT FULL SIZE!If you are seeing this in your email go here to see the full post!
Thank you Cory for sharing your images with all of us! Folks Cory is a very talented guy in not only photography, but sign painting, pinstriping, and just about everything I see him put his mind to and a truly good guy to hang out with. Follow him on social media linked at the top of the article and make sure you tell him how much you appreciate him sharing his work here.
See you at a show,

In this episode Royboy sits down to hear some of the stories of Racer Jimmy “Doc” Parsons in April 2014. He tells the tales of starting racing without his mother knowing until one day he came home with a race car, also how he met his wife at a hair salon, took her a few hundred miles away to watch him race the same day and came home married a few days later. Doc always had great stories.

It’d been 4 years since I’d been to the NSRA Southwestern Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK. To be 100% honest billet wheeled street rods are not my thing. Some can look great for sure but a set of wheels that cost half what I paid for my car is just something I can’t really relate to at this point in my financial life :). Anyways, the show was big, lots of rides, lots of spectators and lots of wind. The vendor building was usually empty for the amount of spectators, I don’t think that the average spectator had any idea that there were vendors in the building. This is the kind of show that a lot of folks leave their hoods open so they can get judged to get a trophy. As such they leave the cars open like that and look like crap in photos 🙂 Oh well. Folks when your hood is open your car looks like it’s broken down, want a trophy? Go to a trophy store :).

Okay folks, here’s the final post of my 2014 coverage of the Lonestar Roundup! I may do some more artsy edits of some of the photos and share those with you next week but this is it for the coverage. Thanks for one of the biggest weeks that this site has ever had. If you enjoy the posts here, share them with your car fan friends, the more people that see them the more the advertisers will want to be here meaning that I can travel more to new shows farther away and maybe not go into my own pocket so much to do this :). Thanks to everyone that listened to the new Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes Podcast, more to come next week! Enjoy!

Friday at the Roundup this year was almost as big as 2013 on Saturday. We knew this was going to be a big weekend, it was. The Vendor building was full and maybe half of them were friends of mine that I’d become friends with over the years. I feel awful that I didn’t have enough cash to buy anything from all of those amazing artists and vendors. Timebomb Kustoms, Gambino Kustoms, Bernie Ramirez, Vintage Torque, Greenspan’s, Ed Tillrock, Max Grundy, Mad Fabricators, hell I’m sure that I’ve forgotten a bunch of folks. Go to their sites, buy their stuff, support kustom kulture.
