2018 Nostalgia Sid’s Dropped Axles Open House

On Saturday March 10th, 2018 I traveled down to OK to visit Nostalgia Sid’s Open House, then went over to Dewey, OK to hang out with some of the Stray Kat Kustoms family to talk about a couple of upcoming events and make some plans for some big things this year. More of the story below!

2018 Detroit Autorama by Dan’s Hot Rod Photo

While I was hanging out at the Texas Thaw, my buddy Dan Podobinski was at the Detroit Autorama! Here are some photos he was kind enough to share with me so that I could share them with you! Make sure to go thank Dan on his Facebook Page for being so generous.

Thanks buddy!

While the car show area and the pits were both slower to fill than I am used to seeing at this event the car show area filled up and the pits filled in as the morning goes on. There were some drag VW’s that I had never seen before, some killer looking drag bikes including a twin engine job. Speaking of twin engines there was the Ā twin flathead front engine dragster piloted by Heath Murray, which I didn’t get to see run because I was in line for lunch thinking that the lunch break in the racing had been called. So I got to see the top of the car over the safety barrier as it went by but it did sound good! Sorry Heath for missing it!

The Texas Thaw is always a great time and you should put it on your schedule for 2019. Not only is it fun, all of the proceeds go to help send care packages to deployed military members and that’s a damn good cause.

Please go support Unite for Troops and help send care packages to our deployed troops.Ā

After a long day including driving about 6 hours for my day job on Friday I met up with my buddy Dalton at my house and we took off heading for Oklahoma. 5 hours later we get to our stopping point for the night. That’s a lot of driving time in a day, even for me.

Saturday morning we got up early and crossed the Red River into North Texas headed for the Northstar Dragway and the Texas Thaw. When we arrived it was a bit later than I usually do, so there was almost no line to get in. Parked the daily driver and grabbed the camera, it was time to check out some cool rides and hang out with some great folks.

I’ve been heading south of the Red River to Denton, TX and the North Star Dragway to attend the Texas Thaw for a few years now. As an event, it’s a fun one, car show, drag racing, it’s a great way to spend a Saturday. That’s only a small part of the reason that I attend whenever I can. Most years the event is overrun with car buddies from all over the region as well.

This year there were a few less car show entries and the trickled in slowly but filled the car show assigned part of the pits, and there were some friends of mine that were noticeably absent. It was still a great time though!

2018 Starbird Rod & Custom Show PT. 3

2018; starbird; Rod; And; Custom; Show; 146; tulsa

Once I made it to the Rockin Billy Bash downstairs I saw some of my buddies from OKC, the Okie Sleds crew, a couple of their rides are pictured above. Now, for me, about half of the Rockin Billy Bash was cool, I’m not into the art project cars, I don’t care for the burnout contest inside where there could have been more cool hot rods and customs, maybe I’m not the target audience.

I was happy to see some of my Beatnik buddies, the aforementioned Okie Sleds, some Stray Kat Kustoms cars, a great collection of VWs, lots of artists, pinups and some very cool vintage racing rides, some drag and some dirt track cars. I walked past a bunch of other stuff, no offense, just not my thing to see art cars.

I hope you enjoyed the cars I showed you, if I were completely honest I’d rather have left the camera at home and hung out with friends more, I kept having to end conversations to get back to shooting photos and felt rushed the whole time that I was there.

Next event for my schedule is the Texas Thaw in Denton, TX the first weekend of March, hope to see some of you there!

2018 Starbird Rod & Custom Show PT. 2

2018; starbird; Rod; And; Custom; Show; 060; tulsa

What you see above was one of my favorite cars of the show. My buddy Rocky Burris’ Blue Hawaiian 1950 Chevy. Were there cars there built to a higher level with more flash and pizazz? Yup. Were there cars there that make me want to hop in and go for a drive more than this one? Not many.

Friday evening after work I hopped in my daily driver and headed the nearly 300 miles down to my childhood buddy’s home just south east of Tulsa. We talked and BS’d until the wee hours of Saturday morning. A few hours I rolled out of the spare room and found my buddy out in his wood shop. We worked really hard on a project for a couple of hours before it was time to head to the show. Of course the project was just watching Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, so we didn’t have much to do but laugh but it was a good way to start the day.

As we got to the show I ran into another friend in the parking lot I ran into my buddy David who had a couple of extra passes, saving Jared and I the entry fee getting in. The first car we see walking in is the Berlin Bug, a Beetle with a Nailhead behind the seats, this thing is KOOL. There were lots of very high caliber cars at the show this year, but as with any show it’s the high caliber people that make or break any event.

More to come tomorrow…

2018 Starbird Rod & Custom Show2018; starbird; Rod; And; Custom; Show; 006; tulsa

I wasn’t sure if I was even going to attend the Starbird Rod & Custom Show in Tulsa, OK on February 17-18, 2018 but Ā after seeing how many of my rod & kustom family were going to be there I decided to take a break from the 48 Cars 48 States book and slide on down to Tulsa for the weekend. The 54th annual show was a pretty good one over all. Sure there were tons of cars there that just aren’t my thing, hence only taking 161 photos of over 1000 vehicles, but the ones that are my thing were pretty incredible.

I had more shots but quite a few came out a little blurry as I was trying to Ā shoot the show a little differently than I normally do. I hope you enjoy the images, I’ll tell you a bit more about the weekend tomorrow and Wednesday.

Later Friday evening I went out to a great Mexican dinner with some of the Lonely Knights before making the 40 or so mile trek over to Lucky’s Hot Rods for the party. It was nice to wait until a little later to let the hellacious traffic die down. The next morning it was back to the show, on Saturday they let in more cars to park between the buildings, this year I heard that they were expecting 700 or so additional cars, I’ll be honest, I didn’t make it through them all!

Even though I’d spent a bit of time pushing cars around on Wednesday night as part of the Rolling Bones display in Building 6, I had to go back for more. A few more cars had been added to the mix and the Hot Rod Hill Climb/Hot Rod Dirt Drags display was set up and the room was full of people walking amongst the cars and checking out their every detail.

On Friday after the trip to Jimmy Shine’s Workshop and then the Early Ford Store in San Dimas it was time to head to the show. From about noon on Friday until around 6pm I walked the show shooting photos and hanging with friends here and there. Then it was time to grab dinner with the Lonely Knights and then I headed over to Lucky’s Hot Rods in Burbank for the Open House.

2018 Cars For Charities Show Pt 2

2018; Cars; For; Charity; 089; Cars For Charity; Century II; KS; Kansas; wichita

While I had a great time in the few hours I was able to spend at the Cars For Charity show I had my fill of the show in that time frame too. I got to sit and talk with some friends, see some amazing machines and walk by a lot of cars that just aren’t my thing. I hope next year I can have one of my cars changed enough that I can feel okay putting it back in the show.

It’s been my feeling for awhile that you shouldn’t put your car into the same indoor show year after year without changing SOMETHING about it. There’s a ton of great cars in the area that could be in the event and have it change up each year. The feature cars that come in are OUTSTANDING, it’s time to every couple of years get some other clubs to bring some different rides in. Same goes for outdoor events, if you haven’t changed a thing on your car, at least park in a different spot each year!

Enough ranting, this is supposed to be about this show. It’s a great show, it’s a great way to get through the winter months and get pumped up to get your ride ready for Spring and the money raised goes to some good causes. I hope you enjoyed my coverage of the cars that I dug from the show.

2018 Cars For Charities Show Pt 1

2018; Cars; For; Charity; 001; Cars For Charity; Century II; KS; Kansas; wichita

I can’t honestly say how many times I’ve attended this show. It’s name has changed over the 61 years from the time that Darryl Starbird started it, now the show is called Cars for Charity, but it’s still the Wichita Tradition.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had a car in the show, and it’s a whole different experience just blowing into town to shoot photos and leave. I got to spend some time with some good friends and have a beer or two while sitting in between the cars and hanging out.

More of the story tomorrow…

This week on Chrome Pipes and Pinstripes it’s time to bring back a crowd favorite, Drunken Q&A! A bunch of you asked questions, my buddy Travis Chadwick and I got some drinks in us and answered them. Many of the facts we state are wrong, many of the words slurred, and a few edits had to be done to take a few minutes of ranting out of the show to keep me out of trouble. It’s a good time, and there is EXPLICIT LANGUAGE, you’ve been warned. If you don’t like foul language, sit this one out!

48 Cars in 48 States Extra : Don Garlits Museum

On the way from Walt Disney World to Louisiana for my 48 Cars 48 States I stopped to check out the Don Garlits Museum of Drag RacingĀ Ā inĀ Ocala, FL. I had passed by the museum back in 2002 when I was in Florida and I’d wished that I could have stopped since. I wasn’t going to drive by this time!

When I hopped out of the Galaxie I metĀ Chris Bumpus who is the shop foreman in the restoration shop at the museum. He was kind enough to give me a behind the scenes look at some what was going on there. That was awesome! The museum is amazing and be prepared to be there for a few hours, you’ll need it!

48 Cars in 48 States #48 : Louisiana

48Cars48States48; Jacob; Miller; 018

I’m going to do things a bit out of order here, on the way to Louisiana I stopped at Don Garlits’ Museum of Drag Racing but I’ll share those photos tomorrow! My original Louisiana car had to drop out so I got ahold of Jacob Miller on instagram since he’d expressed interest in being the car for the state before and we made arrangements to meet up on my way back from Florida at the end of the trip.

The 1946 Ford that you see here came into the Miller family recently and is a favorite already. The car did the 2017 Hot Rod Power Tour and has a few more road trips planned for it already.
