2014 Lonestar Roundup Part 7

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7

Okay folks, here’s the final post of my 2014 coverage of the Lonestar Roundup! I may do some more artsy edits of some of the photos and share those with you next week but this is it for the coverage. Thanks for one of the biggest weeks that this site has ever had. If you enjoy the posts here, share them with your car fan friends, the more people that see them the more the advertisers will want to be here meaning that I can travel more to new shows farther away and maybe not go into my own pocket so much to do this :). Thanks to everyone that listened to the new Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes Podcast, more to come next week! Enjoy!

Friday at the Roundup this year was almost as big as 2013 on Saturday. We knew this was going to be a big weekend, it was. The Vendor building was full and maybe half of them were friends of mine that I’d become friends with over the years. I feel awful that I didn’t have enough cash to buy anything from all of those amazing artists and vendors. Timebomb Kustoms, Gambino Kustoms, Bernie Ramirez, Vintage Torque, Greenspan’s, Ed Tillrock, Max Grundy, Mad Fabricators, hell I’m sure that I’ve forgotten a bunch of folks. Go to their sites, buy their stuff, support kustom kulture.

2014 Lonestar Roundup Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7

The adventure this week started Wednesday afternoon as my Dad and I headed south for Texas. After stopping by a job site we finally got on the road a couple of hours behind schedule. By 10 pm we were pulling into our hotel parking lot in Sherman, TX. Meeting some friends from the Tulsa area at the hotel and some local friends the next morning we had ourselves a caravan. Picking up more people along the way the trip to Austin was a fun one even with the near constant road construction from Dallas south.

Thursday evening we hung out on Congress, enjoyed some Home Slice Pizza, drinks at the Continental Club, ice cream from Amy’s and some just general hanging out watching the cars cruising.

Friday morning it was up early and off to the show, at 9am the line was already formed to get into the show. Once my pre-reg was in hand and my car was staged to get into the show it was a waiting game for the gates to open at 10am. Here’s the first batch of photos from Friday.

1 Month Warning: Lonestar Roundup!

Okay so I’ve shared a metric crap-ton (technical measurement) of photos of the Lonestar Roundup over the years here, on my Facebook, my Instagram, my Twitter, my Tumblr and any other social media site that I can log into. This year the show goes down on April 4-5 at the Travis County Fairgrounds on the Northeast side of Austin.

For the 2nd time I’ll be driving my Galaxie on the 1200 mile round trip to the show. The plan is to meet up with a big caravan of kool in Dallas on the Thursday morning and roll down together from there.

Here are some of what I saw last year.

From the Guidelines page on the official website, “Registration is open ONLY to 1963 and earlier traditionally-styled american hot rods, custom cars and traditionally-styled bikes. No Imports, No cars newer than 1963.”

That’s it folks, notice it that it didn’t say “rat rod fest.”  Keep the “random crap welded on for no reason” and “you chopped your ride 5″ so I’m chopping mine 9 because I’m a badass” cars at home, bring kool cars or just come to check them out!

All traditionally styled 63 & older rides, heads up! 2 Month Warning: Lonestar Roundup!

This will be the 4th trip down to Austin, TX for me for the Lonestar Roundup. 2011 was the first year I drove the daily driver down solo and met up with a bunch of friends at the show and had a great time. The next year I picked up my buddy Mongo for a sidekick and again we had a great time. Finally in 2013 I drove my Galaxie down to the Roundup, her first major road trip. It was a whole different experience being in the show rather than just spectating at the show.

The Lonestar Roundup (April 4-5, 2014) is a great weekend with the show and tons of un-official events all over Austin with garage krawls, parties, and live music scheduled to keep everyone entertained outside of the show. My first trip down I went to Congress Ave on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the increased number of people at the show makes that nearly impossible now. From locals with their Camaros and other rides that they go and power park on Congress leaving no room for the show goers, to the fact that many non-car folks have become hip to how cool South Congress Ave can be makes the Friday and Saturday nights into huge traffic jams. So my advice is that if you are going, stay away from Congress. There are an amazing amount of great food and entertainment options in Austin that are not on that street, there’s no reason to go be part of the problem.

The Roundup is open to 1963 and older traditionally styled kustoms and hot rods. For the most part that’s what’s there. Last year I was really bummed to see a bunch of off topic cars and crap-tastic rat rods that got in. I don’t know for sure but judging by the mile long line of cars to get into the show I’d be the authorities pressured the show to just get people off the streets and into the show and the filtering process broke down. Parked across from me on Saturday was a mid 80’s mini-truck with badly attached 51 Ford sheet metal around the cab. It did not belong in the show, and still chaps my hide to this day along with all of it’s “look at me, look at me, look at me” brethren. It’s far easier to build a car that gets attention because it’s cool than it is to spend all that time and effort to just get attention just by shock value. This was another one of those events where folks with the rattiest rides were acting like they were all badass at the show, yet this “badass” car was so un-drivable that it was trailered to the show and back and I passed them on the highway.

If you have a kool traditionally styled 1963 or older ride, this show could be a great one for you. If you have a purposely ratty piece of junk, there are plenty of other shows out there that cater to you, go to those.

Here are some slide shows from my visits to the Lonestar Roundup.

I am in no way, shape or form associated with the show and the opinions that I express here are my own and nobody else’s. I’d love to see this show have judges at the gate like the Hunnert Car Pileup did to cull the herd a bit.

See you at a show,

1 Month Warning: Hot Rod Revolution

Lots of photos in this one! I posted about the 2013 Hot Rod Revolution when I heard the new date of November 23rd. Here’s another reminder for ya! If you have a 48 and older hot rod that’s traditionally styled (pre-63 style) this is one of the best shows in the country for you to hit. I’m planning on heading down for a 21 hour round trip even though I don’t have any cars that fit the criteria, this show impressed me that much the first two times I went. Go to the HRR website for more info.

A Look Back: 2010 Hot Rod Revolution – Austin, TX

Still one of my favorite shows that I’ve ever attended. The cars, the venue, the bands, everything just came together to make it a fantastic weekend. The Hot Rod Revolution in 2010 was the first year for the show in Austin, TX, it’s only about a 9 hour drive so it sounded like a great excuse to drive down and check it out. Leaving home at 6:15 pm I checked in to my hotel room at around 3:30am and went to sleep, 6 hours later I was headed to the show. The City of Austin Seaholm Power Plant made for a perfect backdrop of about 100 hot rods. 1948 and older only, traditional hot rod styling only, this show couldn’t help but be awesome. Here’s a slide show of that gallery, click here to go to the gallery directly.

Since then the show has moved to a new location in Austin at Camp Maybre. I attended the 2011 show there and shot photos that can be seen here. The show’s date has moved around and has conflicted with other shows that I needed to attend since and I’ve not been able to go again. Hopefully one of these years I can get back to it because it’s a great show of my favorite type of hot rods.

See you at a show,

I really dig Johnny’s Plymouth

Jerry won the Deadend Magazine pick with his truck, I’ll be shooting a feature for a magazine on it soon.

Love this 48 Merc

Arturo’s shoebox.

That’s it for post 1 of the show coverage. Click any of these photos to see the entire gallery. As the week goes on I will go spend some more time editing a few of these and I’ll re-post the results. Enjoy the coverage and buy a print by clicking on any image then hit the Buy button. The Galaxie made it there and back but will need some repairs that you can help me accomplish so I can take more photos at other shows for you! If I can raise $75 in profits this week I can take the daily to the NSRA in OKC this coming weekend.

See you at a show,

Travis

More from the Lonestar Roundup

I really like the turnout at the Lonestar Roundup when it comes to Kustoms & hot rods.

Here’s Alex Gambino’s 54 Chevrolet

My 63 Galaxie 500

Friday evening I headed over to Austin Speed Shop

Jesse James’ hot rod.

Then it was of to Giddy-Ups to catch Pushrod.

Saturday at the show my friend and caravan companion Jerry got the Deadend Magazine award

Later in the evening it was off to the Poodle Dog Lounge for the Strugglers CC. party. My boys Pushrod took the stage at midnight but before that we hung out in the parking lot checking out all of the rides. Big Ken’s truck looks good in any light.

Sunday morning it was time to head home.

I was passed by a few kool rides as I had to stay pretty low on the speedo due to a vibration in the Galaxie’s drivetrain.

Even with an ailing ride, I enjoyed the 635 mile drive.

Thanks for going along for the ride with me, the coverage starts tomorrow morning!

See you at a show,
Travis

Just a couple of weeks away… Lonestar Roundup!

In 2011 I made my first trek down to the Lonestar Roundup. I was blown away by the city, the people, the music, food, oh yeah and the show.

Check out the 2011 photos here, click through the slideshow to go to the full gallery.

In 2012 I went back. The show was just as good… soooo I’m going back this year. This time the plan is to take my 63 Galaxie down for the first time.

Here’s the 2012 photos

See you at a show,

Music To Drive To: The Jade Idol "No Control"

The Jade Idol “No Control” 2012

From time to time on here I’ll pick a record and review it, or like this one crow about it because I think you should go buy it, for the first “review” I’ve chosen The Jade Idol’s “No Control.”

I was first made aware of The Jade Idol through facebook. Videos began appearing every once in awhile, I had to check them out. What I found was raw, pure, unadulterated rock and roll. The more I heard the more I liked, so yes this review is a bit skewed, I am a fan.

The Jade Idol’s CD “No Control” was released March 19, 2012, just weeks before the Lonestar Roundup in Austin, TX. This plays in because the band is based out of Austin, guitars and vocals handled by Bob Bleed, with Mark Ford on drums. Bleed is one of the talented crew at Austin Speed Shop while Ford has a background in the recording studio. When I asked Bleed to give me a sentence that describes the record from his point of view he said, “I’m really proud of this album, recorded it in my bedroom!” proving that if the music works, it doesn’t matter where it was recorded.

I was able to download the songs from itunes just days before a trip to The Jade Idol’s home town of Austin for the Lonestar Roundup. 9 hours each way to jam out provided more than one listen of “No Control” It’s not a stretch to say that with each time through the tracks the record moved farther and farther up my list of favorites.

Final Thoughts
In an age of over processed, sanitized, perfected studio creations passed off as music, The Jade Idol is refreshing. Much as the White Stripes brought lo-fi, simple, loud rock and roll back to the masses, The Jade Idol does so without sounding like a rip-off. The blues gave birth to rock and roll, The Jade Idol pays homage to both without sounding dated. When you strip away the layers of today’s popular music you find nothing supporting the base, just studio trickery and digital bandaids, but when you listen to The Jade Idol, you’re listening to the foundation, there is nothing to strip away. Long live rock and roll.

Royboy goes to the Hot Rod Revolution part 1-3

Wow! That’s the basis of my review of my weekend in Austin. Fantastic cars, killer music and most importantly some of the koolest people anywhere made this one of my best weekends all year.

Parts 1-3 | Parts 4-11

I’ve started using Instagram on my iPhone and this trip I experimented with documenting the trip with that app. So along the way I was snapping shots from my iPhone which was mounted to the dash of my car.

I left home (Central KS) Thursday evening, determined to make it past the dreaded Fort Worth traffic so Friday’s drive would be short and fun.

Finally around 2am I found a hotel on the south side of Ft. Worth and decided to crash out for a few hours.

Friday was a nice short drive of a little over 2 hours.

I rolled into town on Friday and promptly took a nap in my hotel room…party animal. But later on I went over to Austin Speed Shop for their pre-party and for the the screening of Brian Darwas’ film “A Sweet Sickness: The Flathead Movie” Arriving fashionably almost late the place was packed.

NotStockPhotography was there with his wife and their kool Corvair Van.

Tons of killer rides in the parking lot, tons of great people milling about.

Okay so I got a little artsy fartsy with a couple of shots…

Then I met up with the crew from Pushrod and we set out for the Continental Club to catch Dave Alvin on stage. Wow! that was a great show. I highly recommend if he’s coming to your town you need to be in the audience. I was blown away by the whole performance.

That’s it for Friday, I’m heading off to the day job for now but I’ll post more when I come home for lunch. Click on any of the photos to see the whole gallery, there are about 200 that are currently uploading so they won’t be available for an hour or two.

Here’s a couple cell phone pics from the end of our Friday night watching Dave Alvin at the Continental Club.

I may or may not have been drinking and take no responsibility for slightly out of focus phone shots…

So Saturday morning I roll over to Camp Mabry, it was the first time that I ever was carded to get into a car show, a new experience but to be allowed to have the show on the base was very cool indeed.

The backdrop wasn’t as cool as the power plant last year but that was almost a once in a lifetime type background for a show. There were plenty of interesting sites to look at, I didn’t get to go checkout the museum and I regret that now.

The temps were decent but the wind was not, after braving the cold most of the day I finally broke down and bought a Austin Speed Shop hoodie, yes I’m a wimp.

Remember to click on any of the images to see the whole gallery.

Thanks for taking a look everyone, I hope I can make it feel like you were there in some small way.
