2014 Winfield Garage Show Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2

One of the many great folks that I’ve met along all of these adventures is my buddy Doug. Doug sells shirts at many shows across the midwest, we run into each other quite a bit. He has a show in Winfield, KS called the Winfield Garage Show. For the 2nd year I took my Galaxie to the show, it’s a small show but lots of good people. Hopefully the show can grow a bit in the next few years, Doug does a great job of putting on a show.

On day 48 of a 48 Day road trip, Floyd & Becki Dutton’s 1958 Edsel Roundup Wagon. I shot this mild custom for a magazine article, keep your eyes open to see it in print!

Since I hadn’t been to RJay’s Speed Shop before I made sure to check the facilities out while we were there. They build a bunch of their own parts that then get sold to other retailers and they carry just about everything that it takes to build your hot rod.

The show was titled Burnouts For Brice, the facebook event page had this to say: “We will be having a benefit car show for Brice Eidson who is a great young boy fighting leukemia. All proceeds will go to help cover hospital cost. So come out and have a great time.”

In total near 100 cars showed up and raised nearly $2000. RJay’s made a small burnout pad of concrete and a few of the show goers pulled up to see what kind of clouds they could produce.

2014 RJay’s Burnouts For Brice Coverage pt. 1

RJay’s Speed Shop has been a sponsor of royboyproductions.com for a few months, but I’ve been friends with RJay’s main man Cory for a couple of years. When he invited me to a show at his new location I thought it would be a great opportunity to check out his shop and give you some show coverage from a new event.

The day started at 7am with me running out to my Dad’s to borrow his truck and one of his trailers. He purchased an early 50’s Chevy Truck cab from a buddy of mine that lived along my route to the Adrian, MO home of RJay’s Speed Shop. After the Indy trip last week I was a bit short on funds, but since it had been 8 months or so since Dad bought the cab it was about time that we pick it up and drag it home. So with his gas card in my pocket and his F250 loaded with my camera equipment, girlfriend and her son, we were off!

After the stop at Neal’s shop to pick up the truck cab we made our way over to Adrian and found RJay’s. There were almost 100 cars on hand and the show raised almost $2k for the charity. Click here to learn more about the event and the cause.

Feature Friday: Jerry & Cynthia Curry’s 1936 Ford Pickup

The list of reasons that a particular project gets delayed can be a long one. “Life gets in the way” is how most of that list is summed up. It’s fairly rare to see “our house and garage burned down” on the list, but that’s exactly what happened to Jerry & Cynthia Curry shortly after Jerry brought home a 1936 Ford pickup.

Part 1 | Part 2 Part 3 | Part 4

Scott Pavey’s “Candy Cane” is immaculate. I first saw this car in a video that Doug Reed shot at the 1983 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular when Scott was 16 and had just finished it’s first version. It was awesome to see the car still in his hands and still looking awesome.

Sooooooo kool.

Gary Minor and his wife drove from the San Fransisco area to Indy to be a part of this show.

I first noticed this car at the Stray Kat 500 this year and a week later at the Pete & Jake’s Open House. Good to see it here in Indy.

 Voodoo Larry was in attendance

The Toad looking good all the way from Wichita.

Dave Pareso and his wife Chris brought their Merc to the show with it’s new exterior color, the interior will get transformed to match soon.

 “String of Pearls”

 Pure gorgeousness

This ride was for sale for $15k and seemed a steal at that price.

Ross came 850 miles down I-70 with his chopped, channelled and sectioned Merc.

I came back to get this car without the shadow, but the car had left, good thing I got this one.

Friday morning we headed over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a tour. The Museum was $5 to get in and was amazing.

From the parking lot of the Museum on to the inside there were awesome rides everywhere.

He wasn’t really too happy about posing for photos.

However, Jack relished the opportunity.

This was our ride for our grounds tour.

Not much of an exciting race judging by Dan Greenberg’s lack of caring about the race. 🙂

How much fun would it be to run 230 down the front stretch?

2014 Custom Car Revival: 1400 Miles, 4 Days, 200 Cars, & 1 Great Time!

Part 1 of 4

Part 1 | Part 2 Part 3 | Part 4

When I first heard of the Custom Car Revival in Indianapolis last year I knew I wanted to go. However, the dates last year didn’t work out and I missed the inaugural event. After returning from this year’s event, I don’t think that I’ll make that same mistake again.

 Leaving home on Wednesday Evening
Leaving home on Wednesday Evening

Wednesday evening my girlfriend, her son and I loaded up in my 63 ½ Galaxie and headed out on our trip to Indy. Planning to only put a few hours in before meeting up with some friends from Colorado we headed east. Lucky for us my father was headed west on I-70 at that same time and invited us to have some BBQ with him. After that delicious detour we made our way up to St. Joseph, MO for our hotel. A drunk driver nearly ran us off the road, put himself in the ditch and then passed us on the shoulder, we called 911 and turned his plates and car description and peeled off that highway for our hotel.

Thursday morning we met up with Roger and Dan Jetter and Dave and Chris Pareso from ColoRODo and we headed east on highway 36 towards Indy. Highway 36 is known as the shortest route from Denver to Indy according to a sign in Norton, KS along the route. They had followed the highway from Denver to St. Joe before we joined the caravan.

The drive was a long one but fun. I’d been down much of that stretch before so nothing new for me to see, but my passengers had not so there was some excitement in showing a 6 year old the Mississippi River and other sites of interest.

Finally later in the day we arrived in Indianapolis at the host hotel. Some traffic had slowed us down and I had to turn the heater on full tilt boogie to keep the car from overheating but we made it. The cars in the parking lot for Thursday night alone were breathtaking.

Jon Wright – Age 33 – 1964 thunderbird mild Kustom, air ride, shaved handles, hood scoop extended, tail light grill, astro supremes, white walls, heavy flake top. Jon 1

Evan Jones – Age 19 – I drive a 1949 Chevy 5-window pickup.  It’s old skool themed, being satin black and red with coker classics white walls.  It’s original styling on the inside with a stock dash with slight modifications to adapt for a/c.  There are no body mods.  Custom seat, engine and transmission are small block 350 with 700-R4, both were acquired from the Ol’ Marias car show in Ottawa, KS.  With the help of my dad and friends, I bought the truck around my 15th birthday for $800 and began building it from the ground up my sophomore year of high school.  It was up and running by my 16th birthday and I drove it to school my junior year, weather permitting of course. It’s been driven frequently since it’s completion, the last venture we drove was for my senior trip.  We traveled all of Route 66 to  Chicago and back from our home in Broken Arrow, OK.  I’m now 19 and attend the University of Oklahoma.Evans1 Evans2

Tony Moore – Age 27 – 1960 coupe deville, lower half original factory paint, upper flaked out roof with the lace pattern of my grandmother’s actual table cloth.15″ Supremes with one off 2 3/8″ whitewalls. Redone interior with inserts and stitch pattern inspired by 59 impala. painted and pinstriped tins on the original 390 motor. Tony1 Tony2

Jamie Han – Age 24 – It’s just a pure, simple garage built gasser ranchero. I funded it threw trading labor and selling a pair if model t’s. The 65 has a warm 302 t ram covered with a pair of original m/t valve covers that I literally dug out of the trash at a friends shop and the polished them back to a fine sheen. All the spent fumes arethrew a set of fenderwell header that I handcrafted, the collector house a pair of mufflers to hush the roar without the need of full exhaust. The power is sent through a c4 into a narrowed (by yours truly) 8.8 ford rear that houses a Trac loc with a 3.73 cog and a set of halibrand big windows wrapped in so Mickey thompson street rubber. The interior is bare only a mustang bench shifter, a mid sixties dixco tach  and a true vintage gold superior wheel. That’s my street freak in a nut shell  thanks for the opportunity Travis and sponsorsJamie Jamie2

Jason Mayginnes – Age 34 – 1929 Model A Ford Tudor that I’ve been working on. Dropped / reverse eye spring, still plan on dropping the rear some more, striped, A banger powered (just to be different), ’35 Ford 16″ wires with 6.00 and 7.00 bias plies. DP90 black with antique white, gold, and bronze striping. She’s a little different with her original roof height and full fendered with some original accessories added to the mix. Don’t forget the original spotlight mirror also.jason1 jason2

Timm McKenny – Age 31 – A keeper. We found our 46 ford along side the road on a road trip together, the Salina show was actualy part of that trip as a surprise detour, and we had to have it. A 46 has been on my dream list for over a decade and Sarah said we could get it as long as this one was a keeper. A car that ended up in our engagement photos as it arrived to my friends tin shed, and after we both out in hundreds and hundreds  of hours on the car together it was our wedding vehicle. Later on it helped move us 300 miles south for a new adventure moving to Kansas City.

A continual work in progress it will be in the photos of our first house, taking our kids home from the hospital, to there proms and any other big event in the story we are writing. The KKOA show is our only don’t miss it show and after three years of almost making it with the ford this year Sarah tells me the car will be there even if she has to push it! A moonshine style car that can take us on long road trips is what we are trying to accomplish, and after some disastrous paint troubles we just painted it a second time just in time to look cool at the hottest show in the country. timm1 Timm2

I am heartbroken to to relay the news to you that one of our New Blood Award contestants has tragically passed away. Jon Wright was a friend and a good man. We will miss him terribly. Another contestant, Jamie Han has informed me that he is leaving his ride at home and plans on bringing Jon’s Thunderbird to the KKOA because Jon wanted to make it there so badly.

Feature Friday: Johnny Hammann’s 1958 Chevrolet Impala Kustom

As Hot Rod Walt alluded to recently on Episode 9 of my Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes Podcast the current state of kustoms would not be where it is without the hard work of the Kustom Kemps of America. The KKOA’s Leadsled Spectacular started in the Wichita, KS area not just because that’s where Jerry Titus was from, but because a group of folks in Wichita never lost the kustom faith when the rest of car world became muscle car and street rod obsessed.

Shop Visit: May 31st Trip To Ryno Built

On the way to the Queen City Riot last week I stopped by Ryno Built in SW Missouri. Ryno has become a great friend of mine and I take my car to his shop for work when I need something done that is over my head. Here’s what I saw…

2014 Marysville AutoFest Part 2

Part 1 | Part 2

The brick downtown streets of Marysville offers a perfect backdrop for the show. The BBQ contest going on next door offers a treat for the nose as well. This is a show that I’d love to see grow, the people that put it on put a lot into a fun event. The plan is to return next year, hopefully with my buddy’s BBQ team, because that was the one thing missing this year.

2014 Marysville AutoFest Part 1

For the 4th  year in a row I returned to Marysville, KS the first weekend of June for the Marysville AutoFest. Once again Mother Nature decided to rain on our parade. with moisture early in the day the normal car count was down a bit, but the entire time that I was at the event there were cars rolling in. Now out here in the Midwest we know that the local economies rely on the weather so we never complain about a little rain. This show is fun every year, and I wish I had more time to stay this year to meet a few owners of some of the cars but I had a wedding to rush off to. Enjoy the photos, more to come tomorrow!

What do I do about Saturdays?

When I first started to take this blog to a daily thing, I included the weekends. Later I scaled back to try to give myself a little breathing room, on top of the 50+ hours a week at the day job, a 7 day a week blog was just too much at the time. Later Saturdays became a place to do a rundown of all of the posts of that week, let’s face it, you can get the same info just going to the homepage of the site.

So I find myself wondering what do I do with Saturdays and Sundays? What would you like to see here on Saturdays? My current thought is to resurrect the “2 Month Warning” and “1 Month Warning” posts as a combined post on Saturdays to let you know what shows are coming up. As a week day blog post they never got many views but maybe as a combined post on Saturdays they might be more useful to you.

To that end:

3 Months Out:

August 30th & 31st Greaserama, Tracy, MO 2013 Greaserama Coverage | 2012 Greaserama Coverage

September 5th & 6th Starliner, Wichita, KS 2013 Starliner Coverage | 2012 Starliner Coverage

2 Months Out:

August 1st & 2nd Krome N Kandy, Hudson, WI

July 24-27 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular Salina, KS 2013 KKOA Coverage | 2012 KKOA Coverage

1 Month Out:

July 4-6 Goodguys Des Moines, IA

I’ve been playing with some photos from past shows, what I give you each week is the down and dirty coverage of the shows that I attend. Truth is I want to give you more of this type of stuff as well. Remember I can do a kustom photo shoot of your vehicle and give you similar results.

See you at a show,

Royboy

Feature Friday: Built, Not Bought 1926 RPU

The phrase “Built, Not Bought” gets ballied about quite a bit these days. Not all of us feel up to the task of building our rides, yet. So when you see a guy at a show that isn’t advertising that it’s “Built, Not Bought” you find yourself assuming that maybe it was bought or at least paid for and shop built. Not the case with this 1926 Ford RPU.

Shop Visit: Hot Rod Garage

There are a lot of talented builders out there, there are a ton of great shops I get to visit. Hot Rod Garage of Sand Springs, OK stands out as one of the best of that group. Last Friday on my way to Tulsa I stopped and hung out at the HRG for about an hour looking at some of the projects they have going on.

This is one of the most meticulous shops I’ve ever seen. Every car is built right and every car is an example of how to do whatever it is that you’re doing. I was floored at the craftsmanship when I got to see it up close. Father and Son owners the Smith’s were out in the shop getting dirty when I showed up. Their office chairs empty, their hands dirty, building cars. That says a lot to me.

Jim and his son Jason Smith started HRG 17 years ago and have grown to be one of the best around.

When I showed up, Owner Jim Smith was working on TIG’ing up some exhaust pieces for this ride. There’s a lot of stuff to fit in the frame, but it’s all tucked up and nice so that the car looks good even when you’re laying on the ground next to it.
Another project is this flattie powered sedan. There are some great Vintage go-fast pieces on this one.

Jason Smith’s personal project gets some love on the weekends and evenings. This Falcon is being prepped to road race. The 3 window body in the background goes on the frame show earlier.

In the owner’s family since it was a year old this ol trifive is now sitting on an Art Morrison Chassis and has a 600 hp Caddy LS8 under the hood. Pictured next to is a new shop dog that just wandered into the shop earlier in the day.
This Hemi powered Jeep Rubicon is being transformed to mimic a show vehicle from SEMA a couple of years ago. It is mean and going to get meaner.

The attention to detail on this 57 floored me. The engine is clean and not too flashy, showing that it means business. All hoses and lines are cleanly routed and look like GM designed the engine for this car.

2014 Queen City Riot Part 1

Part 1 Part 2 | Part 3

The 2014 Queen City Riot is in the books. A dreary forecast which actually did come true for a couple of quick spells may have kept some folks away. The turn out was smaller than expected but I like this show and I will return. The plan was to take the Galaxie this year, but it wasn’t ready when I needed it. So the daily driver it was :). A stop at Hot Rod Garage in Sand Springs, OK will be featured on Thursday on the blog and a new car Feature will be on Friday, now on with the pics from the show!

Jonnie King interviews Frank Livingston on his 49 Chevy!

“Hi everybody !   Hope everyone reading this is “storm free” and able to be Crusin’ once again !

The work that my friend Travis does on this Site is awesome…hope you come back often to check-it out

Here’s an important story that I want to share with you right now…

LONG-TIME HALL OF FAME MEMBER, Frank Livingston, wow’d the crowd’s over a decade ago when he unveiled his Pagan Gold, Oz Welch-built ’49 Chevy Fastback !

It was very similar to his 1955-built ’49 Fastback…but it was not quite a “clone” for a number of reasons that he explains, and you may have seen the car in-person at the GNRS, or, at Santa Maria.

Frank’s an old friend, and the story about how the idea for this build was put together is just super-cool….and what he say’s about the paint work alone is something you won’t want to miss !   Simply Click-On-Right-Here to Listen !!

Thanks again, for visiting here with Travis…and come back often !
