2015 GoodGuys Nashville Nationals Part 1

With 4 different events, this was another busy weekend where I had choices to make. I chose to head to the event that was the furthest away, the 2015 GoodGuys Nashville Nationals at LP Field in Nashville. Leading up to the event the weather was again going to be a factor, nothing new this year, but concerning since it’s about 745 miles from my home to LP Field. During the week I nervously checked the forecast and day by day it jumped up and down, but all of them said the same thing. It was probably going to be wet.

Around noon on Friday I took off from the day job and hit the road. Just before midnight I rolled into the hotel parking lot in Nashville, I was wiped out. Fast forward to Saturday morning, just as the week before it was raining when I woke up but this time the radar showed that once it moved through there wasn’t much of anything to follow. Time to head to the show!

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

As we arrived at the stadium I see that the the folks in Tennessee didn’t care about the rain nearly as much as the folks did in Texas for the Spring Lonestar Nationals. There were people and cars everywhere. Since the rain was still coming down it was time for a short detour into Nashville’s downtown area to grab a bite and wait out the worst of the rain. Soon we was back at LP Field and get some coverage of the event for you folks to enjoy!

My dad has 2 of these Cameo pickups from Chevrolet, I’m not sure why they chose to do the bed sides in fiberglas but the trucks sure look cool.

A little wet patina for you.

Here the rain had picked back up and you can see it in the shots.

I’m a big fan of 58 Chevys and this one is pretty dang cool.

If you haven’t already, get yourself subscribed to the blog, either at the top right of the page or the bottom of this post so that you don’t miss any further updates! I’ll be posting more from this event all week!

Tulsa Starbird and Detroit Autorama Video!

I’ve been sitting on this footage for awhile, well since the two events themselves. But I knew a day like this would come when I needed to have something in my back pocket. The problem was I never got around to combining the footage into two videos until now. So, sorry for the late post today but I’ve been waiting for the videos to upload to Youtube so that I could post them here. I hope you enjoy them, I’ve also been working on getting my next Motornation video ready so be on the lookout for that.

You’re Missing Out…If You’re Not Going To These Events!

Since the rain shortened up my coverage of the Yellow Brick Road Car Show this week and I haven’t done an upcoming event listing in awhile I figured today would be a good day to do that. What you’ll find in this post is a list of all of the shows that I know of in the next few weeks and links to their websites or Facebook event pages and photos if I’ve attended the show before. So grab your calendar, pick a show and get yourself out there to join the rod/kustom family!

2015 Yellow Brick Road Car Show Pt. 2 Coverage Brought To You By Stray Kat Kustoms

Once the rain stopped and I was working my way around the park, I spotted a couple of amazing rides. The 36 Ford I showed at the end of yesterday’s coverage and this Willys were 2 of them.

2015 Yellow Brick Road Car Show Pt. 1 Coverage Brought To You By Stray Kat Kustoms

I told myself that in 2015 I would do my best to hit shows that I’ve never attended before. The 2015 Yellow Brick Road Car Show was one of the shows that was recommended to me. 2014 saw the show with about 400 rides from western Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, sounded like the perfect opportunity to see new-to-me cars, meet new people and hopefully introduce new people to royboyproductions.com.

As you can see from the photo above, Mother Nature had other plans. The strong storms that the Midwest had been seeing for a few days were forecasted to show up again on Saturday all across Kansas, including Liberal in the southwest corner. Late Friday afternoon I looked at the forecast and decided that it looked like I could have a clear morning in Liberal or a rainy one in KC. So I packed up after work and drove 4 hours out to Liberal, KS and got a room.

2015 Stray Kat 500 Pt. 5 Coverage Brought To You By Soft Strip

I hope you’ve enjoyed the coverage of the 2015 Stray Kat 500. I also hope that if you have a traditionally inspired rod or kustom that you’d like to join the fun next year. As you can see from the photos, the show is not exclusively traditional cars, but it is what I like the best of course. 🙂 Officially the count was right around 600 this year, not too shabby considering there were two other events that have now started happening on the same weekend. There were still cars from a bunch of different states and we all had a great time.

2015 Stray Kat 500 Pt. 4 Coverage Brought To You By Soft Strip

I’m almost sad to type this, after this there will only be one more post on the 2015 Stray Kat 500. To have such a great time, and to be moving on to the next event so quickly almost doesn’t seem fair. I’d bore you if I stretch it out any more but I just don’t want this week to end, it’s hard enough leaving Dewey, watching all of my friends go their separate ways yet again. Covering the event on my site allows me to re-live the weekend a bit longer. You folks are awesome and I’m so very blessed to have you in my life.

I’m truly grateful for all of my advertisers like Adam at Soft Strip for advertising on the site to help me pay the bills of bringing you show coverage. YOU make it possible for me to do this.

2015 Stray Kat 500 Pt. 3 Coverage Brought To You By Soft Strip

The 2015 Stray Kat 500 was my 5th trip to the event and it just keeps getting better each time. This is not a show that you go to if you’re expecting to see a spectacle. This is a laid back event much more akin to a family cookout where everyone brings their rides.

The 500 is one of my favorite weekends every year. I can’t even really describe why. The people are a major part of it, the cars are a bonus but being surrounded by the best people on the planet for a weekend is what it’s all about.

Saturday morning I was already reeling at how fast the weekend was going. After enjoying a little bit of moonshine and a lot of great stories with friends from all over the midwest I hit the show by 8am on Saturday. I set the GoPro up to take a photo every 30 seconds, I’m going to work through those photos and get a video put together for everyone ASAP.

The 2015 Stray Kat 500 is in the books! Dang, that was a great weekend! I left my home Thursday at 6:15 after getting off of work, headed for Derby, KS for Jack’s house. Jack’s 51 Ford Shoebox is pictured above on our drive to Bartlesville, OK on Friday morning. We joined up with a few guys for a 6 car caravan for the 2 hour drive, it was a lot more enjoyable than rolling solo all the way back from Austin a couple of weeks ago. A HUGE Thanks! goes out to Soft Strip of Wichita, KS for sponsoring this week’s coverage, their support makes it possible to do this!

Once again I call on the help of a friend when I can’t be everywhere at once. This week JD from JD’s Collectibles was the lucky devil. He went to the 2015 Texas Thaw last week at the Northstar Dragway in Denton, TX and was kind enough to share his photos with me to share with you!

2015 Throttle Jockeys Car Show And Drags Pt. 4

The drags at the 2015 Throttle Jockeys Car Show and Drags ARE A BLAST! It’s no BS, line up and run when the flags fly drag racing. It’s no nonsense, it’s the way that drag racing was meant to be in my opinion. The crowd was pretty big for such a small community and the entire time that I was there the cars were lined up 10 rows deep, I’ll hazard a guess that people were having a good time.

2015 Throttle Jockeys Car Show And Drags Pt. 3

Two of my favorites of the 2015 Throttle Jockeys Car Show and Drags were these roadsters owned a father and son from the Hutchinson area. The 33 on the left recently got fenders, changing the look of the car completely. Both cars are powered by hopped up flatties and sound oh so good.

2015 Throttle Jockeys Car Show And Drags Pt. 1

Last year I made the trek over to Herington, KS to the Throttle Jockeys Car Show and Drags for the first time. Herington is only about 40 miles from my house so a bit of a shorter drive for the Galaxie than the 635 each way last weekend. The Throttle Jockeys car club puts on a nice show in the business district of Herington with drag racing for anyone involved in the show in the afternoon. Like many areas of Kansas, Herington has a nearby WWII air base that still exists. It’s still in use today as the Herington Municipal Airport, but one leg of the triangle shaped runways now has a short drag strip set up. Look for drag pics later in the week, we’ll start with the car show part of the event.

2015 Lonestar Roundup Coverage Pt. 5 Brought To You By Owens Salvage Co.

Saturday morning after a little miscalculation on how far my gas gauge goes (I was 1 mile from the gas station, so so so close). I got into the 2015 Lonestar Roundup late and it was PACKED one of the biggest car counts I’ve ever seen at the Lonestar Roundup. There were too many people to talk to and too many cars to see. I didn’t make it into the indoor vendor area all day, missed out on seeing a bunch of my friends that were vending and still didn’t get everything shot that I wanted to see.

The weekend was not without incident. Mercury Charlie had a horrible accident leaving the show in the rain. He is in the hospital now and will be on the mend for awhile but things are looking good for a recovery. The car he was in did not fair so well. In the end, oh well, cars can be recreated, there’s only one of each of us. Please keep Charlie and his friends & family in your thoughts and prayers. If you can spare a few dollars to help him out please consider donating to this GoFundMe campaign set up to help him cover expenses in this trying situation. Get well soon Charlie!

I really love the integration of the Oldsmobile grille in this shoebox.

Still on Friday’s coverage! After watching the Mini Bike races and taking FAR too many shots I finished up the west parking lot of the event. Later Friday evening after the rain that started just as I left the facility I went over to Top Notch (yeah the drive in burger joint from Dazed & Confused) and watched my buddies Pushrod perform. This was the first performance of the band that I was able to see after the tragic loss of my friend DaddyO last year. The band sounded great, we had some emotional moments as a group thinking about DaddyO, but it was amazing seeing my friends again.

Today for part 2 we continue with Friday’s coverage. The image above is of the new Model A by Ricky Bobby’s Rod Shop. The Lonestar Roundup is one of those shows where I know far too many people to get through it efficiently. Most of my day was spent talking with friends and not shooting enough photos, somehow I still ended up back at the hotel with over 1000 images of the day. About half were shot during the mini bike races, most of those were deleted because they weren’t anything special. Stay tuned for the ones that made the cut!

I’ve been attending the Lonestar Roundup since 2011 and I have a better time each succeeding year. This year I drove my Galaxie down for the 2nd time in the 3 years that I’ve taken the car to the show. I was honored when I got an email a week ago that my car was chosen to be in the featured area of the show, so Wednesday evening I headed out for Texas after the day job. By 1:30 am I was rolling into Van Alstyne, TX to stay with my friends Jeff & Verna. They are awesome enough to always have a spare room for me to bunk in, as many of my north Texas friends have offered. By 7:30 we were rolling south to meet up with some other friends on the drive to Austin.

2015 Meatheads Pre-Lonestar Roundup BBQ!

Since I needed something to post today anyways I decided to stop at the Meatheads BBQ on the way to Austin yesterday! The Meatheads CC puts on this killer BBQ with amazing food and live music on the Thursday before the Lonestar Roundup each year. The party has turned in to one of THE places to be for the Roundup trip each year. Held kind of in the middle of nowhere outside of Taylor, TX this event is always a great way to star the weekend when rolling down I-35 towards Austin.
