Friday at the Roundup this year was almost as big as 2013 on Saturday. We knew this was going to be a big weekend, it was. The Vendor building was full and maybe half of them were friends of mine that I’d become friends with over the years. I feel awful that I didn’t have enough cash to buy anything from all of those amazing artists and vendors. Timebomb Kustoms, Gambino Kustoms, Bernie Ramirez, Vintage Torque, Greenspan’s, Ed Tillrock, Max Grundy, Mad Fabricators, hell I’m sure that I’ve forgotten a bunch of folks. Go to their sites, buy their stuff, support kustom kulture.

The adventure this week started Wednesday afternoon as my Dad and I headed south for Texas. After stopping by a job site we finally got on the road a couple of hours behind schedule. By 10 pm we were pulling into our hotel parking lot in Sherman, TX. Meeting some friends from the Tulsa area at the hotel and some local friends the next morning we had ourselves a caravan. Picking up more people along the way the trip to Austin was a fun one even with the near constant road construction from Dallas south.
Thursday evening we hung out on Congress, enjoyed some Home Slice Pizza, drinks at the Continental Club, ice cream from Amy’s and some just general hanging out watching the cars cruising.
Friday morning it was up early and off to the show, at 9am the line was already formed to get into the show. Once my pre-reg was in hand and my car was staged to get into the show it was a waiting game for the gates to open at 10am. Here’s the first batch of photos from Friday.

Donnie Smith Bike Show has been going on for 27 years. It is now an annual tradition – a staple to the people in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region. It is typically a great time to see some new and old bikes as well as take advantage of the swap meet that takes place in the back hall. This year something new was added…..
There is a third level at the River Centre that was taken advantage of when the World of Wheels had their shows there a few years back, but this was the first time the Donnie Smith bike show took advantage of the upstairs level. The added addition of the cars was a nice touch and will increase the spectator level in years to come. It is always a great time to get out of the house, tell your buddies what you have (or haven’t) been doing in the garage, and see some rides. Before you know it – we will be riding ourselves.
Seeya on the road.

Over the last few years of covering all of these cars shows I’ve met more friends than I can count. One family that I kept running into has been the McGregors out of the Wichita area. Most of the time you see them they are 3 generations strong at the shows, recently I was lucky enough to get together with 4 generations of the family.
I need to go back with the audio recorder and get some of the great stories that I heard recorded. Thanks to the entire family for bringing your rides out to let me get some photos of them together and for your hospitality. I expect that next time we do this it will be later in the evening and there is a possibility that beer may be involved.
See you at a show,
Royboy

After the whirlwind trip to the Texas Motor Speedway for the 2014 Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals I headed north. The plan was to make it up to the OKC area for a photo shoot scheduled for the evening. I was leaving early enough that if I was quick about it, I could make it up to Guthrie, OK for Nostalgia Sid’s for his Open House.
A little over an hour into the drive I hit rain, and that lasted for about the next 100 miles. Varying from a light drizzle to a full on downpour, it slowed me a bit. After a gas and lunch stop I was able to get to Nostalgia Sid’s by about 3:30 to find that most of those that had shown up had already left. Oh well, some good friends were there so it was still a good time.
If you need a drop axle for your ride, check Nostalgia Sid’s first.

There’s not much to say about the show, people at the show vs. people I know at the show at the Goodguys events means that I spent more time shooting photos than I did talking with folks. That is usually not the case. At the smaller shows there are a lot more people that I know and I spend so much of my time enjoying great conversations with awesome people that I might miss out on some photos. In the end I’m there to cover the show and the people are a big part of the show so that’s fine with me to miss a few photos in order to spend good times with good people.
Since I was on a shortened timetable anyways I took as many photos I could a short amount time ran back out to my car and got back on the road. I hope you enjoy Part 2 of the 2014 Goodguys Spring LoneStar Nationals from Texas Motor Speedway.

After much fretting and flip flopping on what to do with a forecast of 90% chance of rain I went from my hotel in Ardmore, OK to Fort Worth, TX for the 2014 GoodGuys Spring Lonestar Nationals at the Texas Motor Speedway. I’m glad I did. Lots of kool cars, many of them out of my normal style but nicely done.

Overall the Texas Thaw was a blast. I did have 1 issue though. At some point during a day long event you might get a bit thirsty or hungry, which did happen to me. So I went over to try The Bomb food wagon’s food, uh damn, long line there. So I went over and got in the longer line for the track’s concession stand. I don’t know what made me choose that longer line but something in my head though since it was the track concession stand that they’d be ready for crowd and they’d get me through the line quickly. WRONG. I was talking with folks so I didn’t realize that it had taken 45 minutes to get up to the order window. Right… well okay I’ll get a cheeseburger, some fries and 2 bottles of water, it may take 15 minutes or so to get my food so a 2nd bottle of water might come in handy. I was 75 minutes short in that estimation. That’s right boys and girls. After paying $17 for a double cheese burger (fatboy upgraded at the window), some fries, and 2 bottles of water, it took over 2 hours start to finish to actually stand in line and then get the food. That’s with 6 people giving up on waiting in front of me before I even got to order. Northstar Dragway, YOU FAIL when it comes to the concession stand. There is no excuse for a wait like that. A.) make a separate line for the folks that only want drinks and serve them out of a big beer cooler. B.) load your grill with burgers when you have a line instead of dropping them when you get the ticket up next. I saw one guy who waited 30 minutes from ordering to get 2 corndogs and 2 nachos, that’s an order that should have been up in about 90 seconds.
Okay enough of that bitching. I had to say it out loud and I had to say it where it will show up in google searches.

The day turned out quite nice weather wise. I should have spent more time shooting when I got there but there were people to see, stories to tell and memories of a fallen friend to share. The sun came out and gave me a decent little sunburn, I wandered the pits seeing old friends, meeting new ones. I have to say I dig this event. The cars are cool, the people are cool and the money goes to the USO/Unite for Troops.

March 1, 2014 marks the second time that I went down to Denton, TX to the Texas Thaw put on by the Torques Car Club. The 1/8th mile Northstar Dragway was again the host for the 7th time. The car show area was overflowing just as last year and the drag pits were as well. Lots of vintage steel on hand for show and go.

Okay so I’ve shared a metric crap-ton (technical measurement) of photos of the Lonestar Roundup over the years here, on my Facebook, my Instagram, my Twitter, my Tumblr and any other social media site that I can log into. This year the show goes down on April 4-5 at the Travis County Fairgrounds on the Northeast side of Austin.
For the 2nd time I’ll be driving my Galaxie on the 1200 mile round trip to the show. The plan is to meet up with a big caravan of kool in Dallas on the Thursday morning and roll down together from there.
Here are some of what I saw last year.
From the Guidelines page on the official website, “Registration is open ONLY to 1963 and earlier traditionally-styled american hot rods, custom cars and traditionally-styled bikes. No Imports, No cars newer than 1963.”
That’s it folks, notice it that it didn’t say “rat rod fest.” Keep the “random crap welded on for no reason” and “you chopped your ride 5″ so I’m chopping mine 9 because I’m a badass” cars at home, bring kool cars or just come to check them out!
See you at a show,
Royboy

It was an ambitious goal. 3 events in 2 states in 1 day. To be fair it was 3 events in 2 cities that were a state apart in 24 hours, enough with semantics, lets start with the photos. The first stop of the trip was the Chill in Park City, KS. The show consists of 3 giant buildings, 1 that’s vendors, bikes and this year Semis, yes big rigs. The other 2 buildings were full of cars, trucks, drag vehicles etc.
We’ll start out with the bikes. There weren’t very many of the flavor that I enjoy, but those are mixed in to these photos.

On Friday night Feb. 28th at the Go Away Garage in Wichita, KS I saw more kool art than I can even describe. Artist At Large had a gallery show with friends from all over the country at the Go Away Garage.
Here are some cell photos of the event.
See you at a show,

Today’s blog post was supposed to be a new video feature that I shot last weekend. Honestly after hearing the news about a good friend who passed I just don’t feel like fighting some software that needs updates so that I can do the final edits. I’ll push the video back and show it to you later. Today’s post needs to be about DaddyO. If any of you would like any of these photos without the watermark (it’s automatically applied by my site) let me know and I’ll send you a clean copy.
My first introduction to Jamie (DaddyO) was hearing Pushrod play at the Stray Kat 500. The rowdy loud rockabilly sound was fun, the silliness of all of the guys in the band made the performances epic.
Later that evening Pushrod played again, this time in the tiny conference room of the host hotel. I didn’t know anyone at the show yet really, but the guys laid on an intense and insane performance for a standing room only crowd. Over the years I caught up with the band in Austin on Lonestar Roundup weekends and became friends with the guys. Actually in Austin I became the chauffeur for the guys and their ladies when some of us had a drink or two. Again the performances were epic.
Somewhere in here was when Atlas Speed & Custom became official. T shirts and hats advertising the shop were being sold at the Lonestar Roundup and Daddy-O invited me to stop by some time. “It’s a cool old quanset hut building, looks awesome in pictures.” I was sold and planned to come down to Denison for the KKOA show in October and finally go to Atlas and check out the shop and some of the projects that Daddy-O was working on.
That Friday night I went to a local bar, Smitty’s I believe was the name. Pushrod was playing and I had a handful of friends in the audience, but other than that the entire packed bar were complete strangers. I hadn’t been feeling well earlier in the evening so the band was on stage and rocking when I showed up. The boys stopped in the middle of a song to welcome me to the bar like I owned the place. It was always a good time watching Pushrod perform.
The last 2 H.A.M.B. Drags weekends Pushrod performed. It was good to see the guys someplace north of the Red River.
Then in 2013 I made a trip down to Texas for the Texas Thaw, money was tight and Daddy-O knew it. He generously offered up a cot in his pad for me to save some bucks. Every time I was to be in the area, he always invited me to stop by the shop. Many other folks echo the same thing when they were coming through town. Daddy-O was always up for showing off what he’d been working on, and it was always stuff that’s cool.
Later in 2013 I was back in North Texas for Pistons N Paint. On Sunday before heading back to KS I met up with Jamie and we went for a ride in Atlas 1 and did a little photoshoot. I had a blast riding around getting the comedic version of the history of Denison, TX. Afterwards we were back at the shop for a bit, talking life, women, music, hot rods and kustoms. It was a great time and that’s where the first photo at the top of the page came from.
I miss you my friend, the world is a less kool place without you.
