Stray Kat Kustoms Car Shows- Stray Kat 500 May 4-6, 2018 in Dewey, OK
One of my mainstays since my first time attending has been the Stray Kat Kustoms Starliner show in Wichita, KS. Since it’s inception the show has been held at the Kansas Aviation Museum, a great backdrop for classic hot rods and kustoms! The show this year is on Sept. 9th with the annual Garage Krawl on the 8th. The Garage Krawl is where we head all over the area to various shops and garages to see cars and folks, a way to get out and about in our cars rather than sit at the show next to our cars for two straight days.
Friday evening at the host hotel for the show we gather and my club the Lonely Knights cooks street tacos for everyone, we all have a good time, with good food and great friends. This is a large part of what makes it my favorite weekend of the year. Saturday starts early with a trip over to the Kansas Aviation Museum, the cars park amongst the planes on the grounds. One of the coolest venues for a show that I attend for sure.
48 Cars In 48 States : The Great American Road Trip – A 48 state road trip with a stop in each state to photograph a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or drag vehicle. Daily updates will be posted here on royboyproductions.com so you can see where I’ve gone, who I’ve met, some of what I’ve seen. At the end of the trip I’ll produce a 200 page full color book of the entire adventure. Business Sponsorship Packages here available as well as you can pre-order the book here!
Labor Day weekend in the KC area means 1 thing to me, Greaserama! This Sept. 2-3 will mark the 17th Annual Greaserama, a weekend of hot rods, customs, music, art and great folks. The show happens in Tracy, MO at the Platte County Fairgrounds, a perfect venue for a car show. The fairgrounds have a great vibe to them, which is an important part of any show. Below I’ll share some photos of the past events, if you haven’t been to the show, put it on your schedule!

A few years ago Kevin Anderson and Bob Davis started the Custom Car Revival in Indianapolis, IN. What they wanted was a custom only event to celebrate the Westergard to Watson era of custom cars, what they got was so much more. The show has turned into 200 incredible customs and their owners, and a weekend of hanging out with some great people.
I first attended the show in 2014, as soon as we rolled in late Thursday afternoon I was blown away by the cars in the parking lot of the host hotel. Thursday evening there’s food and hanging out in the parking lot. Friday is a day of exploring Indy, Anderson has said that they didn’t want a show where folks just sat behind their cars for 2 days and some tours of the great city of Indianapolis seemed a great way to spend Friday.

Way back in 2010 I drove 9 hours into northwest Iowa for a first time show with no idea what I was getting myself into. My buddy John Wells was putting together the first ever Vintage Torque Fest, a car show with an indoor area for feature cars, a dirt track for the folks that wanted to take a couple of laps and a great vibe, something that many shows just don’t have.

I remember seeing a listing for the Stray Kat 500 a long long time ago in the back of some magazine. I thought, what a cool name for a show! It was a couple of years before I got myself down to Dewey, OK and when I finally made it, I never missed another ‘500’ again.
That first year that I made it had to be 2010 if my memory serves correctly, it was just a year or two later that I got my folks to join me and they have been coming since as well. See a theme developing? This is one of those great shows that is hard to really describe correctly. The best way I’ve found is to call it a family reunion, where you just aren’t related to everyone and they all bring their cool cars. That’s a bit of a misnomer though, because by the time you leave the 5oo, you ARE family, you’re part of the Stray Kat Family.

2015 was a fun year! In total I traveled 25,768 miles in 2015 to events as far away from central Kansas as Austin, Indianapolis and Georgetown, Colorado. In 2016 I plan on cutting back a bit, and relying more on my friends out there that love to shoot car show photos as much as I do to help fill in when I can’t be everywhere. However, the first 3 months of 2016 are shaping up to be pretty awesome, here’s what I have planned for January.
Since the rain shortened up my coverage of the Yellow Brick Road Car Show this week and I haven’t done an upcoming event listing in awhile I figured today would be a good day to do that. What you’ll find in this post is a list of all of the shows that I know of in the next few weeks and links to their websites or Facebook event pages and photos if I’ve attended the show before. So grab your calendar, pick a show and get yourself out there to join the rod/kustom family!
Since I had no car show to attend last weekend I’m filling the site with some other stuff this week. This post has a TON of photos, well if digital photos had weight, I’m guessing these would weigh about that… Anyways, yesterday we had the March Meet coverage by Travis “TwoTallOkie” Miller and later in the week we’ll have some more show coverage by John Wells and a guest post by pinstriper Lizzie Fenwick.
April is shaping up to be a busy car show month! Starting this weekend I’m going to be busy pretty much through November. Stay tuned, it’s going to be a hell of a ride!
The 2015 Texas Thaw has been rescheduled for April 25th!!!
For the last couple of years I’ve headed down to Denton, TX’s Northstar Dragway to attend the Texas Thaw, and I’ve had a blast. I am bummed that its the same weekend as the Detroit Autorama this year and I’m attending Detroit for the first time. HOWEVER, if you are anywhere in the area, you need to make it down to the Texas Thaw. What follows are links to the event website and some photos from the last two trips down!
Since I don’t have any shows to cover for this week I’ve taken the opportunity to preview some upcoming shows, here’s another one! After a couple of years of hearing about the show in 2014 I finally got myself up to Omaha, NE for the Omaha World of Wheels show. For 2015 the show happens Feb. 27-March 1 at the CenturyLink Center in Downtown Omaha.
Coming up Feb. 27-March 1 in Park City, KS (just north of Wichita) is the Park City Chill! The show is held at the Pavilions next to the old KS Coliseum and has been going down there for the last few years. Below are some photos from the last few years and links to the official website. If this looks like your type of event then make sure to put the show on your calendar!
February 20-22, 2015 is the 51st Darryl Starbird Rod & Kustom Car Show at the River Spirit Expo at Expo Square Fairgrounds, Tulsa, OK. Here are some photos of the last few years’ show to get you in the mood for this year! I’ve been attending the show for the last few years, the cars competing for the Fine Nine award are always some of the best in the country.
We’re already in the 2nd weekend of car show coverage for 2015 and there’s more on the way! This is the 1 Month Warning for the O’Reilly Auto Parts World of Wheels in Bartle Hall in Kansas City on Feb. 13-15, 2015
Ahhh the first week of the year, always a slow time for me. As I write this my main computer is doing the final rendering of my first episode for my channel on the upcoming MotorNation.tv video service. I’ve had no show for the last 2 weeks and folks it is driving me batty to not be out on the road with my friends. Lucky for me this weekend is the first show of the year, the Retro Rewind in Dubuque, IA.
Back in 2010 I got the bright idea that I wanted to organize a fun run. The problem was I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes and schedule my event the same weekend as theirs, so when could I put it on? How about the middle of December??? After a phone call with Mickey from Stray Kat Kustoms I even had a cool name for the event and the Mid Decembrrrr Run was born!
Yes, I know it’s supposed to be feature Friday. You see, my feature car owner is in Bonneville and I didn’t get his tech sheet before he left so any article I’d write on it would be completely made up… and although that sounds fun I figured I’d just hold on it the article until I could get a proper piece written. Soooooo here we are, one month away from the Starliner show…
One of my favorite shows of the year each year is the Stray Kat Kustoms Starliner. The show goes down this year September 5th with the Garage Krawl and 6th with the show itself. Click the link below to see more from last year’s show! Continue reading “My Favorite Show Is Coming : Starliner”

Early last year I was contacted on Facebook about a new show coming up. The Queen City Riot in Springfield, MO. I’d never been to Springfield for a show before but the guys seemed cool and the show looked like a good time so I booked a room and rolled out for the show.
The show goes down at a VFW facility which means there’s some kool old pieces outside, some great food inside and some of our nations heros around all day long. I was blown away with the biscuits and gravy breakfast that I got at the VFW, you have to get in there and try it. The show itself was on the small side but that will change, this show will grow and my plan is to get back there again this year. The show goes down May 30-June 1 in Springfield, MO, be there.

Southwest Street Rod Nationals goes down in Oklahoma City, OK at the State Fair Park the weekend of April 11-13, 2014. You can go here for full info on the event weekend.
I’ve only been to this event 1 time, but I do plan on returning this year. Schedule conflicts or just plain monetary conflicts have kept me away since the one trip that I took in 2010, but this year I will make a return… and nobody there will really notice. The show is big, lots of space, lots of street rods, lots of vendors and last time I went not all that many people from my normal circles. One of the koolest parts of the event is when people start to split from the show on Saturday they cause a parade of sorts of most of the cars in the event, so gather up a lawn chair and enjoy the scenery as it rolls by.
Here are some photos from my previous visit to the show.
See you at a show,

For the last few years the Vintage Torque Fest put on by the folks of Vintage Torque DVD‘s on the first weekend of May. I give promoter John Wells a lot of hell for changing the date of the show because it now means the show conflicts with the Stray Kat 500. Since I do not own a flux capacitor equipped Delorean (which wouldn’t fit the criteria of either show) I must choose. 9 hours each way or 3.5 hours each way… Sorry John.
But just because I can’t make it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t bust your butt to get there. Go here and find out all of the info. Here’s what I saw the first 2 years.
Thanks to John Wells and Vintage Torque for sponsoring the New Blood Award!!!!
See you at a show,

One of my favorite car shows each year is the Stray Kat 500. Yes I have Stray Kat Kustoms plaques in my cars so yes I may be biased. The Stray Kat shows are really more like rod/kustom family reunions where everyone brings their rides. The show goes down May 2-4, 2014 in Dewey, OK for info on the show go here. Stray Kat Kustoms has been generous enough to donate $100 towards the $1000 that will be given away for the New Blood Awards that we are giving away during the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular weekend.

Okay so I’ve shared a metric crap-ton (technical measurement) of photos of the Lonestar Roundup over the years here, on my Facebook, my Instagram, my Twitter, my Tumblr and any other social media site that I can log into. This year the show goes down on April 4-5 at the Travis County Fairgrounds on the Northeast side of Austin.
For the 2nd time I’ll be driving my Galaxie on the 1200 mile round trip to the show. The plan is to meet up with a big caravan of kool in Dallas on the Thursday morning and roll down together from there.
Here are some of what I saw last year.
From the Guidelines page on the official website, “Registration is open ONLY to 1963 and earlier traditionally-styled american hot rods, custom cars and traditionally-styled bikes. No Imports, No cars newer than 1963.”
That’s it folks, notice it that it didn’t say “rat rod fest.” Keep the “random crap welded on for no reason” and “you chopped your ride 5″ so I’m chopping mine 9 because I’m a badass” cars at home, bring kool cars or just come to check them out!
See you at a show,
