2014 Lonestar Roundup Part 3

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7

Friday at the Roundup this year was almost as big as 2013 on Saturday. We knew this was going to be a big weekend, it was. The Vendor building was full and maybe half of them were friends of mine that I’d become friends with over the years. I feel awful that I didn’t have enough cash to buy anything from all of those amazing artists and vendors. Timebomb Kustoms, Gambino Kustoms, Bernie Ramirez, Vintage Torque, Greenspan’s, Ed Tillrock, Max Grundy, Mad Fabricators, hell I’m sure that I’ve forgotten a bunch of folks. Go to their sites, buy their stuff, support kustom kulture.

2014 Lonestar Roundup Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7

The adventure this week started Wednesday afternoon as my Dad and I headed south for Texas. After stopping by a job site we finally got on the road a couple of hours behind schedule. By 10 pm we were pulling into our hotel parking lot in Sherman, TX. Meeting some friends from the Tulsa area at the hotel and some local friends the next morning we had ourselves a caravan. Picking up more people along the way the trip to Austin was a fun one even with the near constant road construction from Dallas south.

Thursday evening we hung out on Congress, enjoyed some Home Slice Pizza, drinks at the Continental Club, ice cream from Amy’s and some just general hanging out watching the cars cruising.

Friday morning it was up early and off to the show, at 9am the line was already formed to get into the show. Once my pre-reg was in hand and my car was staged to get into the show it was a waiting game for the gates to open at 10am. Here’s the first batch of photos from Friday.

Jonnie King interviews Spence Murray!

Hi to all !  Travis’ Site never ceases to amaze me !  Cool pix & info all the time !! I hope you will forward this to your friends, and bookmark it/add it to all your Media devices !

He is the Founding Editor of Rod & Custom Magazine, and in this Exclusive Interview, SPENCE MURRAY , tells the Origin Story of how it all began back in 1953 !

Spence is an old friend, and a historian of the highest level.
His input to the HOF Legends Site has been invaluable and greatly appreciated, we talked about that at Darryl Starbird’s 50th Anniversary Tulsa Show where Spence, his wife, his grandson, and, myself, spent some great quality-time together .

This is definitely one of the MOST IMPORTANT pieces of  R & C Audio History you’ll ever hear…simply CLICK-ON-HERE , turn up your speakers, and enjoy Spence’s story of “The Origin Of Rod & Custom Magazine” !

Hope you enjoy it…and be sure to come back and Travis’
Site on a regular basis !!

Guest Post: John Wells at the Donnie Smith Bike Show

Donnie Smith Bike Show has been going on for 27 years.  It is now an annual tradition – a staple to the people in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region.  It is typically a great time to see some new and old bikes as well as take advantage of the swap meet that takes place in the back hall.  This year something new was added…..

IMG_20140329_092349_432 IMG_20140329_092304_899 IMG_20140329_092232_472 IMG_20140329_092210_682 IMG_20140329_092115_845 IMG_3604 IMG_3603 IMG_3596 IMG_3585 IMG_3579 IMG_3575 IMG_3569
There is a third level at the River Centre that was taken advantage of when the World of Wheels had their shows there a few years back, but this was the first time the Donnie Smith bike show took advantage of the upstairs level.  The added addition of the cars was a nice touch and will increase the spectator level in years to come.  It is always a great time to get out of the house, tell your buddies what you have (or haven’t) been doing in the garage, and see some rides.  Before you know it – we will be riding ourselves.

Seeya on the road.

John Wells

New Blood Award Entry Form

ENTRY IS NOW CLOSED!!!!

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE!!!!

As I mentioned on the New Blood Award announcement, in order to be eligible for one of the 2 $500 cash prizes you need to enter here on royboyproductions.com and here is how to do that!

If you and your ride meet the criteria (under 35 years old and bringing a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or gasser that has never been to the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular before), fill in this form. I will email you so that you can then send me a photo of your ride. If you are getting this via email and not seeing the entry form just below, click here to go to the post on the site and enter.

So there you have it, simple really. You fill out that simple form, I get that info in an email, I (sometime in the following 24 hours) send you an email and we go from there.

As mentioned in the New Blood Award announcement, the awards will be decided by 1 of 2 means.

1.) A people’s choice award, voted on by the viewers of this website.

2.) Royboy Pick, I pick a car that I like.

The prizes will be given away at a party on the Saturday night (July 25, 2014) of the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. The party will be held at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS. You will need to be there to win, just like your car will need to be at the show to win.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me here and I will do my best to de-confuse you :).

This contest is in no way affiliated with the KKOA or the Paramount Bar, it is wholly a product of Royboy Productions.

The New Blood Award is sponsored by these AWESOME folks:

  • Royboy Productions

  • Stray Kat Kustoms Car Shows- Stray Kat 500 May 2-5, 2014 in Dewey, OK & Starliner Sept. 6, 2014 in Wichita, KS

  • Marysville AutoFest Car Show- June 7th, 2014 in Marysville, KS

See you at a show,

Royboy

Early last year I was contacted on Facebook about a new show coming up. The Queen City Riot in Springfield, MO. I’d never been to Springfield for a show before but the guys seemed cool and the show looked like a good time so I booked a room and rolled out for the show.

The show goes down at a VFW facility which means there’s some kool old pieces outside, some great food inside and some of our nations heros around all day long.  I was blown away with the biscuits and gravy breakfast that I got at the VFW, you have to get in there and try it. The show itself was on the small side but that will change, this show will grow and my plan is to get back there again this year. The show goes down May 30-June 1 in Springfield, MO, be there.

For info on the show go to their website here, or their facebook here.

Check out this gallery of last year’s show or just watch the slideshow below.

See you at a show,

Royboy

Cooling The Big Block

So about this time last year I told the tail of what I called the domino effect when working on my 1963 Galaxie 500 Sportsroof. Click here to read part 1 and part 2 of that saga. Here we are for part 3!

As you’ll see in the photos the car was fitted with 2~ 8″ dia. electric fans on a shroud. The couple of times that I tested them they weren’t quite enough to keep the engine cool. Before you start telling me what I need to check, it’s a new aluminum radiator, new water pump, the timing has been checked, etc. 2013 wasn’t especially hot as the previous years and I had learned to avoid traffic to keep the heating issue to a minimum.

So this winter I decided that one of the upgrades that I needed to get done was to get the car so that it would cool even if we get another scorcher summer. A quick check told me that the fans that I had were only capable of moving about 1300 cfm each. At anything over about 5 miles an hour this was enough to keep the engine cool so I knew it was close. A look around the internet and I found on Sumitt some Perma-Cool 8″ fans that move 2400 cfm each. Bingo! I raided my ailing savings account and ordered a pair up.

The new 8" fans that I ordered were a bit smaller than the other brand
The new 8″ fans that I ordered were a bit smaller than the other brand’s 8″ fans that were on the car. So these went to my Dad who needed some and I ordered up the 10″ units. The old fans pushed about 1300 cfm each and these new ones are 2350 each.

Lesson learned, an 8″ fan from one company isn’t exactly the same as an 8″ fan from another. Since my dad needed some fans for a project he had going he bought them from me and I re-ordered some of the Perma-Cool 10″ units at 2350 cfm each, still a huge bump up from 1300 each. When they arrived I found them to be bigger than the originals. Damn. But I was able to place them on the shroud and cut the openings out larger to fit the new more powerful 10″ fans.

 Here
Here’s the fan shroud without the fans in it. I scratched some marks to show where the new openings needed to be cut and enlarged the existing openings.
 Dad
Dad’s farm has a cat problem, but it has no mouse problem. Here my work was being inspected.

After enlarging the holes with an air powered nibbler I brushed myself and the bench off and started mocking up the new larger fans. New mounting holes were drilled and the fans were temporarily mounted to the shroud. I test fit them in and all was good. Next step was to pull it back out, solder up the wiring to the existing wiring harness. I reversed the bolts from what is in the pics so that the bolt heads were on the radiator side, I covered them in some rubber bumpers to keep them from chewing up the radiator and side the whole assembly back together.

I started the car and let it heat up. Found that it must have leaked something awful on the way home from Ryno Built’s shop awhile back. The driver’s side exhaust had some oil on it. After burning that oil off, no new oil was leaking (for now). I’ll re-check the manifold bolts to make sure that they aren’t the culprits this weekend. I ran the car for a good 15 minutes or so and it never got hot, the new fans kicked on and I could certainly feel the fans pulling through the radiator from the front side.

We’ll see what happens on the way to the Lonestar Roundup. 1 week until we leave. If I have time this weekend I will upgrade the headlights and taillights to make sure I’m more visable.
See you at a show,

Royboy

A Saturday Afternoon With The McGregor Family

Over the last few years of covering all of these cars shows I’ve met more friends than I can count. One family that I kept running into has been the McGregors out of the Wichita area. Most of the time you see them they are 3 generations strong at the shows, recently I was lucky enough to get together with 4 generations of the family.

I need to go back with the audio recorder and get some of the great stories that I heard recorded. Thanks to the entire family for bringing your rides out to let me get some photos of them together and for your hospitality. I expect that next time we do this it will be later in the evening and there is a possibility that beer may be involved.

Due to a couple of the cars being under construction there are more to be seen but this was a good collection for you all to see.
After a bit of discussion it was decided that this Sedan was the one that’s been in the family the longest of the group.
Joe’s Caddy graced the cover of my 2009 Calendar For Charity.
Joe’s Caddy on the left and Jeb’s “Nadine” at center have been with the fellas since the high school days.
Jeb’s Unibody Ford pickup has been at most of the cooler shows in the region, it may be time for new paint, stay tuned.
The car bug is not just a male thing in the McGregor family. The ladies get in on the fun too.
Rick’s hot rod has been together since the early 80’s and I really couldn’t tell.
I really dig this ride. It’s just right.
Rick’s truck was last seen by my lens in January when his daughter Mollie showed it at the Starbird-Devlin Show.
Missing from the shot here is Jeb’s Coupe, currently getting a re-working.
Usually when you see this car, it’s full of the whole family.
The little ones are fully immersed in the car shows and taken along to almost all of them.

See you at a show,

Artist Feature: Timebomb Kustoms

IMG_0256

1. Do you remember an “ah-ha” moment that made you know that art was going to be an integral part of your life?

I was always into art and did some drawing in school, but kind of got away from it as I got older. I remember thinking tattoos were the coolest thing in the world. Then I started going to car shows. I was amazed by the pinstriping and kandy paint. I never thought I would end up doing it for a living. About 9 years ago I ordered my first pinstripe brush and 1/4 pint of 1shot. The first time I pulled lines I was hooked. I thought “Damn, I can do this.” Of course looking back on it now, I know my first attempt was a total disaster, but I stuck with it and realized I could not be without art in my life.

IMG_0257

2. If you could pick 1 piece of your work that would represent the entire body of your work, which one would you choose?

This question is tough because I am actually working on it now as I type this. It is a 12×24 board all in heavy silver flake and the plan it to do kandy patterns, pinstriping and one of my flyin eye cut outs mounted to that. The plan is to have it done for Lone Star Round Up. It will pretty much have just about everything I have figured out in it minus leafing unless I can figure out a way to work that in too.

IMG_0258

3. Who or what most inspires your work?

Lots of people inspire me. I look at Doug Dorr’s work and talk to him a lot. He was my mentor and taught me a lot. I owe everything to that dude! Also, the work of Hot Dog, Von Francho, Skratch. Those dudes kill it and amaze me with their clean line work. I draw inspiration from lots of other places, too. I look at a clean car and instantly start striping it in my head. Anything with nice curves really. Old Signs, low riders, hand lettered drag cars. Hell, even stain glass windows in churches. Just about anything can be art and inspiration if you look close enough at it.

IMG_0259

4. Is there an artistic style or process that you haven’t tried yet that you want to try?

Some day I would like to try my hand at sculpting. I have never done that, but that is way down the road. I still have lots of things to master that I am already working with first haha

IMG_0260

5. What’s 1 piece of advice you’d give an artist that’s just starting out today?

Be ready to work, nothing is given to you out there. Talk to the guys that have been around. Learn all you can and listen. You never know everything, and if you ever think you do then it is time to stop.

11 Days And Counting…

On April 3rd, 2014 a new voice forces itself onto the digital airwaves. A new on demand online radio show all about the Midwestern Rod/Kustom scene will go live on settostunproductions.com

Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes: The Royboy Radio Show will be a weekly show where I share my travels and adventures with you in an audio form. The plan is to take my audio recorder with me to events and capture the stories of the people I meet. What was their first cool car. What car do they wish they’d never sold, etc. The plan is to ask folks the same questions each time, with follow up questions depending on the answers that we get. If you have a question that you’d like to see added to the list, comment on this blog page below. I can’t guarantee that I use them all but I will consider all entries. I want Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes to be OUR show, not just mine. I want you to look forward to the next installment, to see who I talk to next, etc.

There will be a post here on royboyproductions.com with a streaming player, and full show notes including photos when appropriate. Or you can go to settostunproductions.com to stream the show. The best way to get it for us on this end is if you go to itunes (once it’s available) and subscribe. I will give you all a link ASAP.

2014 Nostalgia Sid’s Open House

This week I ran a contest to find a new name for my new podcast which launches on April 3rd, 2014 on the Set To Stun Productions Podcast Network. The new name and the winner of the contest will be announced tomorrow and I’m stoked about the name and the show. The plan is to bring an audio version of what I do here to you, including short interviews with folks live at car shows and other events. I have been blessed to become friends with folks who have combined CENTURIES worth of experiences in the rod/kustom world and I want to mine that experience for great stories and tales of adventures from all of these great folks.

2014 Nostalgia Sid’s Open House

After the whirlwind trip to the Texas Motor Speedway for the 2014 Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals I headed north. The plan was to make it up to the OKC area for a photo shoot scheduled for the evening. I was leaving early enough that if I was quick about it, I could make it up to Guthrie, OK for Nostalgia Sid’s for his Open House.

A little over an hour into the drive I hit rain, and that lasted for about the next 100 miles. Varying from a light drizzle to a full on downpour, it slowed me a bit. After a gas and lunch stop I was able to get to Nostalgia Sid’s by about 3:30 to find that most of those that had shown up had already left. Oh well, some good friends were there so it was still a good time.

If you need a drop axle for your ride, check Nostalgia Sid’s first.
