May 17, 2014 I took my 2nd trip to the annual Atwood Early Rod Run in Atwood, KS. This small northwestern KS town holds a show each year that draws cars from both the local region and some long haulers. The City park at the north of town has campers of all makes and models as the folks flock to the city for the weekend. The event is equal parts party, car show and drag races. Like the last time that I made the 3 1/2 hour trip, there was just enough rain to have the show but too much for the drags to go down.

Usually I post a few days worth of coverage of an event from my camera, so when I was given the opportunity to post 2 days of coverage of the SW MO Hot Rod Hundred by two different people, I jumped at it! Thanks to Quentin Brown of artdirectorandhotrodder.com for these great photos of the Southwest Missouri Hot Rod Hundred!
I had attended the Route Scout for the Hot Rod Hundred with my co-worker Curtis Green back in October. The route we scouted took us up through Willard, the Stockton Lake area and a stop at the historic Rt.66 gas station in Spencer, Mo. We took the same route this time but ended the drive in Crane, Mo with a chili lunch that was provided by BenD and his family.
The whole Hot Rod Hundred event was an amazing time. I don’t think I would change one thing about the entire event. Overall we went 224.7 miles in the roadster and it ran like a sewing machine the entire way. ”

Last Friday I shared some photos from my buddy Cory McMahon from his trip to the Lonestar Roundup. Over the weekend he went on the Southwest Missouri version of the Hot Rod Hundred. I was bummed that I couldn’t go, now that I see his photos I’m downright depressed! Cory has been gracious to share over 100 photos with us of his adventure on the Hot Rod Hundred. As a special bonus tomorrow we’ll have another look at the Hot Rod Hundred from another participant. Find Cory on Facebook here or on Instagram here.

This past weekend was the southwest Missouri edition of the Hot Rod Hundred reliability run hosted by Bret Chrismer and the Crossmembers CC. This was the second of the 5 events held across the country and it was a huge success. Each event consists of the same idea, a 100-ish mile reliability run, yet each one is different.
The southwest Missouri run ended up being almost 150 miles. We started off leaving the legion hall in Springfield at 9 and made our way north to Lake Stockton for our first stop. Then we made our way around the lake and headed south. A couple stops later brought us to a section of old Route 66 for some awesome photo ops in front of a cool old gas station. We then got back on the highway and headed to Crane, MO, for chili and hot dogs. The event was fantastic and a huge success with over 70 cars in attendance from Iowa all the way down to Dallas. Big Ken from Dallas got the “Long Haul” award that I pinstriped up on one of Bret’s old Moon disc covers. Ken drove 1000 miles round trip in his 33 pickup. He’s awesome.
There’s still a few more Hot Rod Hundred’s you can attend this year. The north Texas and Oklahoma City run’s are on June 14 with the two runs meeting up for a joint picnic, and the St. Louis run is October 11. Do yourself a favor check out the Hot Rod Hundred on the H.A.M.B. and hit up one of these reliability runs if you’re in the area. They’re a blast. Congrats to Bret and the Crossmembers for hosting such a fine event.

It’d been 4 years since I’d been to the NSRA Southwestern Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK. To be 100% honest billet wheeled street rods are not my thing. Some can look great for sure but a set of wheels that cost half what I paid for my car is just something I can’t really relate to at this point in my financial life :). Anyways, the show was big, lots of rides, lots of spectators and lots of wind. The vendor building was usually empty for the amount of spectators, I don’t think that the average spectator had any idea that there were vendors in the building. This is the kind of show that a lot of folks leave their hoods open so they can get judged to get a trophy. As such they leave the cars open like that and look like crap in photos 🙂 Oh well. Folks when your hood is open your car looks like it’s broken down, want a trophy? Go to a trophy store :).

2013 was the first time that I headed down to Denton, TX’s Northstar Dragway for the Texas Thaw. The combination vintage drag races and car show was 6 years old in 2013 and had one of it’s biggest turnouts to date. The 2014 Texas Thaw goes down on March 1, again at the NorthStar Dragway right along I-35 outside of Denton, TX. For all of the info on the show go to the official website here or here on facebook.
The 2nd show on the weekend of Feb 14-16 is the Darryl Starbird show in Tulsa Oklahoma’s Quiktrip Center. For more info on the show go to Starbird’s site here.
Be sure to keep an eye on the center isle of the building for the Fine Nine award participants and see if you can guess who’s taking home the Go For The Gold award and it’s huge cash prize.
Part 4 and the final post of the show coverage from the Creme De La Chrome Rocky Mountain Auto Show in Denver Colorado held over Thanksgiving Weekend. This post features a bunch of rides that were on display in the Hot Rod Hill Climb area as well as the Deluxe Speed Shop display. Some of my favorites of the show.
That’s it for my whirlwind trip up to Denver and back on Black Friday. After that last pic I hopped in my daily driver and high tailed it east for 422 miles, had some drinks with friends and family and called it a day. I hope you enjoyed the coverage of the show! More fresh content for you tomorrow morning at 9am Central!

The show featured all kinds of cars and like I said in post 1, most of them were new to me so I’m sharing them even if they don’t fit in the more traditional/old school style. There is a post coming that is chock full of vintage hot rods that were at the Hot Rod Hill Climb so stay tuned, to make sure you don’t miss it, subscribe by entering your email address in the top right hand corner of this page. CALENDAR UPDATE!!!!
As of right now only 20 copies remain of the Trucks Edition, all others are sold out!
For a couple of years I’ve been hearing about the Rock Mountain Auto Show in Denver, CO over Thanksgiving weekend, 2013 was finally the time to make it up and check the show out. One of the voices telling me of the show was my friend photographer Dan Greenberg, and once I saw that my friends from the Hot Rod Hill Climb were going to do a display featuring a bunch of the cars that ran the hill climb this year, I was all in.
Waking up at 5:30 am I rolled out for the 6 hour drive west on I-70 for the Colorado Convention Center on the south west side of Denver’s downtown. As soon as I arrived I ran into a bunch of friends from across the midwest, including Dan who had a lens for me to experiment with. I’ve been considering buying a certain lens and he had an older version of it and was kind enough to let me test his out. Thanks Dan! Here’s the first batch of photos from the event, click on any of them to go to the entire gallery. This show had a lot of quality cars that aren’t of the traditional or old school flavor but they were new to me and hopefully new to you so I’m including them in the coverage.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Wichita on a Saturday afternoon and I decided to finally head over to kustom/hot rod/general car guy legend Dave Stuckey’s. Some may know Stuckey’s name, he was the man originally responsible for the amazingly kool kustom “Lil Coffin” (read more about that here). Dave has been working for awhile on a couple of really cool projects, one of them being a somewhat drag version of Lil Coffin, not that it set out that way but there are some similarities in the overall design of the body. His attention to detail on this project is phenomenal. Lots of kustom touches on items that will never be seen by most people let alone noticed, some subtle, some not so subtle. I won’t show you too much of the car, it needs to be a surprise. Here are some shots of it.
Another project in the works is this coupe, he has a beautiful flathead built for it and is just waiting to finish the big project to get back on it.
Here’s a shot of my favorite version of the Lil Coffin on an old Starliner poster. (More info on the upcoming Starliner show)I’m hoping to be able to stop in more often and sit with Stuckey and a video camera so that he can tell you some of his stories in his voice. It’s part of project that I hope to spend more time on in the future, more on that later.
From time to time while I’m doing my normal car show coverage I’ll take an extra second and do some multiple exposure shots. When I get time I merge these HDR shots for a bit of a different look from normal. Mostly I try to keep them fairly realistic looking but occasionally I will get a bit wild. Here are some from the H.A.M.B. Drags. Remember if any of these shots are something that would look good on your living room or garage wall, click the photo to go to the shopping cart and order any size you’d like.
Some of my Mulvane Marauder friends were in attendance
Of course the Lil Honker, always a favorite.
My buddy John’s barn find gasser

John and Butch warming up the hides.
That’s it for this HAMB Drags post, 1 more tomorrow and then maybe some special edits on Friday.
Thanks for following along on all of my adventures, remember if there are any photos you’d like to own a copy of for your wall, click on the photo here, and the site will take you to the appropriate page to buy prints. Every print you buy helps put gas in the tank to get me and my cameras to another show to bring you more show coverage.
As usual for this event I decided to leave my ride at home and catch a ride with my folks down to Joplin. With all of the travel that I do, it’s good to spend a couple of those weekends a year with them on the road. As I loaded my bags into the back of the truck the rain was pouring down in our little town. We headed south as quick as we could to try to outrun the storm. The route between Gypsum, KS and Joplin, MO has a few turns so every time we out ran the storm we made a turn and drove right back into it for the first 2 hours or so of the trip. 15 or 20 miles in a massive hail storm and torrential downpours were lowlights of Thursday evening’s drive.
Friday morning we assembled some of our friends and headed for Springfield, MO for the swap meet. The Ozarks Antique Auto Club Swap Meet is massive. There is no other way to describe it really. The car corral is usually loaded with good buys and some that are a bit over priced. There are top notch vendors from across the country and a truly staggering amount of individual sellers covering the fairgrounds. I didn’t find anything that I couldn’t live without, actually I had my heart set on an Offenhauser 4bbl intake for my flathead and some matching heads, but some new Royboy computer upgrades had that cash spoken for. Ahhhh, maybe next year.
Then it was back to the host hotel area for the Friday Night pre-party! Tons of folks drove their rides from all over the country to attend the drags and the pre-party. Music was provided by my friends Pushrod and they rocked the party like non-other.
