The adventure this week started Wednesday afternoon as my Dad and I headed south for Texas. After stopping by a job site we finally got on the road a couple of hours behind schedule. By 10 pm we were pulling into our hotel parking lot in Sherman, TX. Meeting some friends from the Tulsa area at the hotel and some local friends the next morning we had ourselves a caravan. Picking up more people along the way the trip to Austin was a fun one even with the near constant road construction from Dallas south.
Thursday evening we hung out on Congress, enjoyed some Home Slice Pizza, drinks at the Continental Club, ice cream from Amy’s and some just general hanging out watching the cars cruising.
Friday morning it was up early and off to the show, at 9am the line was already formed to get into the show. Once my pre-reg was in hand and my car was staged to get into the show it was a waiting game for the gates to open at 10am. Here’s the first batch of photos from Friday.

Donnie Smith Bike Show has been going on for 27 years. It is now an annual tradition – a staple to the people in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region. It is typically a great time to see some new and old bikes as well as take advantage of the swap meet that takes place in the back hall. This year something new was added…..
There is a third level at the River Centre that was taken advantage of when the World of Wheels had their shows there a few years back, but this was the first time the Donnie Smith bike show took advantage of the upstairs level. The added addition of the cars was a nice touch and will increase the spectator level in years to come. It is always a great time to get out of the house, tell your buddies what you have (or haven’t) been doing in the garage, and see some rides. Before you know it – we will be riding ourselves.
Seeya on the road.

Early last year I was contacted on Facebook about a new show coming up. The Queen City Riot in Springfield, MO. I’d never been to Springfield for a show before but the guys seemed cool and the show looked like a good time so I booked a room and rolled out for the show.
The show goes down at a VFW facility which means there’s some kool old pieces outside, some great food inside and some of our nations heros around all day long. I was blown away with the biscuits and gravy breakfast that I got at the VFW, you have to get in there and try it. The show itself was on the small side but that will change, this show will grow and my plan is to get back there again this year. The show goes down May 30-June 1 in Springfield, MO, be there.

So about this time last year I told the tail of what I called the domino effect when working on my 1963 Galaxie 500 Sportsroof. Click here to read part 1 and part 2 of that saga. Here we are for part 3!
As you’ll see in the photos the car was fitted with 2~ 8″ dia. electric fans on a shroud. The couple of times that I tested them they weren’t quite enough to keep the engine cool. Before you start telling me what I need to check, it’s a new aluminum radiator, new water pump, the timing has been checked, etc. 2013 wasn’t especially hot as the previous years and I had learned to avoid traffic to keep the heating issue to a minimum.
So this winter I decided that one of the upgrades that I needed to get done was to get the car so that it would cool even if we get another scorcher summer. A quick check told me that the fans that I had were only capable of moving about 1300 cfm each. At anything over about 5 miles an hour this was enough to keep the engine cool so I knew it was close. A look around the internet and I found on Sumitt some Perma-Cool 8″ fans that move 2400 cfm each. Bingo! I raided my ailing savings account and ordered a pair up.
Lesson learned, an 8″ fan from one company isn’t exactly the same as an 8″ fan from another. Since my dad needed some fans for a project he had going he bought them from me and I re-ordered some of the Perma-Cool 10″ units at 2350 cfm each, still a huge bump up from 1300 each. When they arrived I found them to be bigger than the originals. Damn. But I was able to place them on the shroud and cut the openings out larger to fit the new more powerful 10″ fans.
After enlarging the holes with an air powered nibbler I brushed myself and the bench off and started mocking up the new larger fans. New mounting holes were drilled and the fans were temporarily mounted to the shroud. I test fit them in and all was good. Next step was to pull it back out, solder up the wiring to the existing wiring harness. I reversed the bolts from what is in the pics so that the bolt heads were on the radiator side, I covered them in some rubber bumpers to keep them from chewing up the radiator and side the whole assembly back together.
I started the car and let it heat up. Found that it must have leaked something awful on the way home from Ryno Built’s shop awhile back. The driver’s side exhaust had some oil on it. After burning that oil off, no new oil was leaking (for now). I’ll re-check the manifold bolts to make sure that they aren’t the culprits this weekend. I ran the car for a good 15 minutes or so and it never got hot, the new fans kicked on and I could certainly feel the fans pulling through the radiator from the front side.
We’ll see what happens on the way to the Lonestar Roundup. 1 week until we leave. If I have time this weekend I will upgrade the headlights and taillights to make sure I’m more visable.
See you at a show,
Royboy

Over the last few years of covering all of these cars shows I’ve met more friends than I can count. One family that I kept running into has been the McGregors out of the Wichita area. Most of the time you see them they are 3 generations strong at the shows, recently I was lucky enough to get together with 4 generations of the family.
I need to go back with the audio recorder and get some of the great stories that I heard recorded. Thanks to the entire family for bringing your rides out to let me get some photos of them together and for your hospitality. I expect that next time we do this it will be later in the evening and there is a possibility that beer may be involved.
See you at a show,

1. Do you remember an “ah-ha” moment that made you know that art was going to be an integral part of your life?
I was always into art and did some drawing in school, but kind of got away from it as I got older. I remember thinking tattoos were the coolest thing in the world. Then I started going to car shows. I was amazed by the pinstriping and kandy paint. I never thought I would end up doing it for a living. About 9 years ago I ordered my first pinstripe brush and 1/4 pint of 1shot. The first time I pulled lines I was hooked. I thought “Damn, I can do this.” Of course looking back on it now, I know my first attempt was a total disaster, but I stuck with it and realized I could not be without art in my life.
2. If you could pick 1 piece of your work that would represent the entire body of your work, which one would you choose?
This question is tough because I am actually working on it now as I type this. It is a 12×24 board all in heavy silver flake and the plan it to do kandy patterns, pinstriping and one of my flyin eye cut outs mounted to that. The plan is to have it done for Lone Star Round Up. It will pretty much have just about everything I have figured out in it minus leafing unless I can figure out a way to work that in too.
3. Who or what most inspires your work?
Lots of people inspire me. I look at Doug Dorr’s work and talk to him a lot. He was my mentor and taught me a lot. I owe everything to that dude! Also, the work of Hot Dog, Von Francho, Skratch. Those dudes kill it and amaze me with their clean line work. I draw inspiration from lots of other places, too. I look at a clean car and instantly start striping it in my head. Anything with nice curves really. Old Signs, low riders, hand lettered drag cars. Hell, even stain glass windows in churches. Just about anything can be art and inspiration if you look close enough at it.
4. Is there an artistic style or process that you haven’t tried yet that you want to try?
Some day I would like to try my hand at sculpting. I have never done that, but that is way down the road. I still have lots of things to master that I am already working with first haha
5. What’s 1 piece of advice you’d give an artist that’s just starting out today?
Be ready to work, nothing is given to you out there. Talk to the guys that have been around. Learn all you can and listen. You never know everything, and if you ever think you do then it is time to stop.

On April 3rd, 2014 a new voice forces itself onto the digital airwaves. A new on demand online radio show all about the Midwestern Rod/Kustom scene will go live on settostunproductions.com
Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes: The Royboy Radio Show will be a weekly show where I share my travels and adventures with you in an audio form. The plan is to take my audio recorder with me to events and capture the stories of the people I meet. What was their first cool car. What car do they wish they’d never sold, etc. The plan is to ask folks the same questions each time, with follow up questions depending on the answers that we get. If you have a question that you’d like to see added to the list, comment on this blog page below. I can’t guarantee that I use them all but I will consider all entries. I want Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes to be OUR show, not just mine. I want you to look forward to the next installment, to see who I talk to next, etc.
There will be a post here on royboyproductions.com with a streaming player, and full show notes including photos when appropriate. Or you can go to settostunproductions.com to stream the show. The best way to get it for us on this end is if you go to itunes (once it’s available) and subscribe. I will give you all a link ASAP.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the “Name My Podcast” contest. The winner is Matt Yost, I’ll be contacting you and mailing your prize package out to you SOON!
See you at a show,

This week I ran a contest to find a new name for my new podcast which launches on April 3rd, 2014 on the Set To Stun Productions Podcast Network. The new name and the winner of the contest will be announced tomorrow and I’m stoked about the name and the show. The plan is to bring an audio version of what I do here to you, including short interviews with folks live at car shows and other events. I have been blessed to become friends with folks who have combined CENTURIES worth of experiences in the rod/kustom world and I want to mine that experience for great stories and tales of adventures from all of these great folks.

After the whirlwind trip to the Texas Motor Speedway for the 2014 Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals I headed north. The plan was to make it up to the OKC area for a photo shoot scheduled for the evening. I was leaving early enough that if I was quick about it, I could make it up to Guthrie, OK for Nostalgia Sid’s for his Open House.
A little over an hour into the drive I hit rain, and that lasted for about the next 100 miles. Varying from a light drizzle to a full on downpour, it slowed me a bit. After a gas and lunch stop I was able to get to Nostalgia Sid’s by about 3:30 to find that most of those that had shown up had already left. Oh well, some good friends were there so it was still a good time.
If you need a drop axle for your ride, check Nostalgia Sid’s first.

There’s not much to say about the show, people at the show vs. people I know at the show at the Goodguys events means that I spent more time shooting photos than I did talking with folks. That is usually not the case. At the smaller shows there are a lot more people that I know and I spend so much of my time enjoying great conversations with awesome people that I might miss out on some photos. In the end I’m there to cover the show and the people are a big part of the show so that’s fine with me to miss a few photos in order to spend good times with good people.
Since I was on a shortened timetable anyways I took as many photos I could a short amount time ran back out to my car and got back on the road. I hope you enjoy Part 2 of the 2014 Goodguys Spring LoneStar Nationals from Texas Motor Speedway.

Some of you are in on it, and some are not. Well here, the cat is out of the bag, the plan is for a new podcast to join the Set To Stun Productions Network the first week of April. The host of that show will be me! That’s right, for those of you that would prefer to keep up on all that is going on in the Midwest Rod and Kustom scene in an audio fashion instead of print there will be a weekly podcast. The plan for now is for me to do some monologue telling any stories that came up that week, as well as having guests on from different parts of the Midwest to talk about what’s going on at their shops, in their clubs, at their shows. The goal will be the same as it is here, to inspire you to come out and join us at the shows.
Mickey from Stray Kat Kustoms (Stray Kat 500 and Starliner promoter and genuine great guy) came up with what I thought was a great name for the podcast. “Redline” seeing as I’m always going at just about full tilt boogie to get to the next show to shoot more coverage and post it up here. However there are already a couple of podcasts out there with that name or a derivation of it. So with about 12 days to go, I’m on the search for a new name! I need to have a couple of days to come up with the logo as well so I’m putting you folks on to job of coming up with a name. You have until Midnight Thursday March 20th to turn in your entry. Just head on over to the Contact page, fill in your name, your email address and then give me your suggestion for the podcast name. One suggestion will be picked as the winner and will receive a prize package including a Hot Rod Stencil Shirt, 2 Royboy Productions Stickers, and the winner’s choice of a red or black Royboy embroidered flexfit hat OR an embroidered Royboy Winter Hat. More prizes may be added to the prize package during the week. Enter as often as you’d like, good luck!
CONTEST HAS ENDED, THANK YOU!
See you at a show,

If you want to this blog in your email inbox each time the blog goes live, go on up to the top right hand corner of the website and enter your email address. The last day of each month I randomly pick 1 subscriber to win a prize package. This month’s prize is a kustom art piece from Chaotic Customs (shown below), a Royboy Knit Winter Hat & a shirt from Stray Kat Kustoms!
Thank you to the first 2 sponsors of my site, quite frankly the only 2 that I’ve asked to sponsor the site so far. If you’d like to help sponsor Royboy Productions and provide the koolest car show coverage to folks worldwide, click here to ask me about it.
After much fretting and flip flopping on what to do with a forecast of 90% chance of rain I went from my hotel in Ardmore, OK to Fort Worth, TX for the 2014 GoodGuys Spring Lonestar Nationals at the Texas Motor Speedway. I’m glad I did. Lots of kool cars, many of them out of my normal style but nicely done.
The easiest way (which costs you nothing) is to share this post! IF you like this post, share it with your car friends using the social media sharing buttons below or just by sending them the link to this page. Every set of eyeballs on the site helps!
Or if there’s something you need to buy from Amazon, click here to go there. Drag that link to your menu bar for quick and easy access. It costs you nothing extra and Royboy earns a small commission.
Don’t forget the Royboy Merch!!!! I have keychains, coozies, stickers & hats for sale. Every piece you buy gets me further down the road to bring more show coverage and podcasts to you.
All Royboy photos on this site are available as prints up to poster sizes. Buying them not only makes your walls cooler it puts gas in the tank to get me to another car show or feature shoot. Please consider buying a print, if you can’t do that, I understand. Or just hit the Store page and buy something or make a donation!
As of the writing of this blog (12:30 am on Saturday) I will make the decision tomorrow morning to continue south into Texas for the Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals at Fort Worth’s Texas Motor Speedway which has a 90% chance of rain or turn around 2 hours and go back north to Guthrie, OK to Nostalgia Sid’s Open House which has a 70% chance of rain. Either way I end up in the OKC area Saturday evening to try to get a photo shoot in if the weather permits. It’s now about 1am and I’m beat, heading to bed. Listen to Friction In The Static podcast that goes live on Monday to hear more about the contest.
See you at a show,
Royboy
If you’re a fan of this site and want to help royboyproductions.com stay alive there are a couple things you can do. Gas and hotels are expensive, you can buy prints, shirts, hats, etc. from Royboy Productions to help offset those expenses and get yourself something kool out of the deal. There is a store page here that will be getting a bunch of new items soon. You can send a couple of bucks through paypal to royboyproductions@yahoo.com as a donation, and you can share the posts that you like with your friends on social media sites. Below every post there is an area called “Share This” with links to most social media networks. Every time you share the posts it helps bring more people to the site and increases the chances of attracting more and more sponsors. The goal of this site always to encourage more people to join the kool kustom and hot rod family by showcasing the best car shows, creating videos and articles that preserve the stories of cars and builders and more. I know that in my heart I can do this full time and never run out of people to sit and interview and none of us will be around forever so I need to get to the point where I can do this full time to archive the stories and lives of as many people as possible. I can only do this with your help.
