There’s A First Time For Everything : 2014 Goodguys Heartland Nationals Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

I’ve heard it for at least 5 years, “The Des Moines Goodguys is the best GG show that there is, you HAVE to go!” Finally I did. Let’s face it, the GG shows held at racetracks all kind of run into each other. The ones at the Kansas Motor Speedway (2012 coverage here, the show has been killed so that’s the latest coverage) and the ones I’ve attended at the Texas Motor Speedway (2014 coverage here) really are all the same in my memories. Lots of cars, lots of people, but no real atmosphere. So you get to drive your car around the track, okay that part is cool, but other than that the cars are basically just parked as if they are in a parking lot. As a spectator and especially as a photographer, that’s boring.

So this year it was time to finally make the trip up to Des Moines to see if this party still is the best GG party around. Of course due to some poor planning on my part the 6 hour trip northeast started with a 90 minute drive south. It’s a long story, but the short version is we had a long day. First we headed south to Park City, KS to see a small show there, one that we never even got into because traffic was backed up and we didn’t feel like making the day even longer by waiting in line to get in. Along the way we saw a Historical Marker that I’ve driven by for decades and never stopped to look at. It marks the crossing of the Chisholm and Santa Fe Trails. Near here there are a couple of areas where you can still faintly make out where the Santa Fe Trail went thanks to an indention in the ground from the wagon wheels. From there we went east to pick up some newly silk screened coozies from B. Scott Studios and hopped on I-35 towards Des Moines. We pulled onto the turnpike and set the cruise.
After some sight seeing stops at the birthplace of Jesse James outside of Kearney, MO, an Amish “Welcome To Iowa” store just across the border we saw the sign for the Covered Bridges of Madison County. Yup the ones from the movie. I’ve never seen the movie, but it seemed a worthy departure from the interstate. Just off of I-35 is St. Charles, IA and one of the bridges. We stopped, read the signs, took a couple of photos and got word that some friends were going to meet for dinner at the Iowa Beef Steakhouse. It had already been suggested that we head there so we changed the GPS destination and got our taste buds ready.

The company was fantastic, the car crowd was filling the joint and the steak was phenomenal. It was pricey for our budget but not overpriced for the experience. With nothing really planned for the evening we settled into our hotel room and tried to catch some shut eye for Saturday. We were warned that at noon on Friday the window placards were already numbering at over 3200 (I’m not sure if they start at 1 and are sequential or not), so we needed to get there early to see all of the rides. Too bad for us a state sized thunderstorm moved into Des Moines before sunup and didn’t clear out until about 10am.

2014 Winfield Garage Show Part 1

Part 1 | Part 2

One of the many great folks that I’ve met along all of these adventures is my buddy Doug. Doug sells shirts at many shows across the midwest, we run into each other quite a bit. He has a show in Winfield, KS called the Winfield Garage Show. For the 2nd year I took my Galaxie to the show, it’s a small show but lots of good people. Hopefully the show can grow a bit in the next few years, Doug does a great job of putting on a show.

On day 48 of a 48 Day road trip, Floyd & Becki Dutton’s 1958 Edsel Roundup Wagon. I shot this mild custom for a magazine article, keep your eyes open to see it in print!

2014 RJay’s Burnouts For Brice Coverage pt. 2

Since I hadn’t been to RJay’s Speed Shop before I made sure to check the facilities out while we were there. They build a bunch of their own parts that then get sold to other retailers and they carry just about everything that it takes to build your hot rod.

The show was titled Burnouts For Brice, the facebook event page had this to say: “We will be having a benefit car show for Brice Eidson who is a great young boy fighting leukemia. All proceeds will go to help cover hospital cost. So come out and have a great time.”

In total near 100 cars showed up and raised nearly $2000. RJay’s made a small burnout pad of concrete and a few of the show goers pulled up to see what kind of clouds they could produce.

2014 RJay’s Burnouts For Brice Coverage pt. 1

RJay’s Speed Shop has been a sponsor of royboyproductions.com for a few months, but I’ve been friends with RJay’s main man Cory for a couple of years. When he invited me to a show at his new location I thought it would be a great opportunity to check out his shop and give you some show coverage from a new event.

The day started at 7am with me running out to my Dad’s to borrow his truck and one of his trailers. He purchased an early 50’s Chevy Truck cab from a buddy of mine that lived along my route to the Adrian, MO home of RJay’s Speed Shop. After the Indy trip last week I was a bit short on funds, but since it had been 8 months or so since Dad bought the cab it was about time that we pick it up and drag it home. So with his gas card in my pocket and his F250 loaded with my camera equipment, girlfriend and her son, we were off!

After the stop at Neal’s shop to pick up the truck cab we made our way over to Adrian and found RJay’s. There were almost 100 cars on hand and the show raised almost $2k for the charity. Click here to learn more about the event and the cause.

Feature Friday: Jerry & Cynthia Curry’s 1936 Ford Pickup

The list of reasons that a particular project gets delayed can be a long one. “Life gets in the way” is how most of that list is summed up. It’s fairly rare to see “our house and garage burned down” on the list, but that’s exactly what happened to Jerry & Cynthia Curry shortly after Jerry brought home a 1936 Ford pickup.

Feature Friday: Built, Not Bought 1926 RPU

The phrase “Built, Not Bought” gets ballied about quite a bit these days. Not all of us feel up to the task of building our rides, yet. So when you see a guy at a show that isn’t advertising that it’s “Built, Not Bought” you find yourself assuming that maybe it was bought or at least paid for and shop built. Not the case with this 1926 Ford RPU.

Shop Visit: Hot Rod Garage

There are a lot of talented builders out there, there are a ton of great shops I get to visit. Hot Rod Garage of Sand Springs, OK stands out as one of the best of that group. Last Friday on my way to Tulsa I stopped and hung out at the HRG for about an hour looking at some of the projects they have going on.

This is one of the most meticulous shops I’ve ever seen. Every car is built right and every car is an example of how to do whatever it is that you’re doing. I was floored at the craftsmanship when I got to see it up close. Father and Son owners the Smith’s were out in the shop getting dirty when I showed up. Their office chairs empty, their hands dirty, building cars. That says a lot to me.

Jim and his son Jason Smith started HRG 17 years ago and have grown to be one of the best around.

Another project is this flattie powered sedan. There are some great Vintage go-fast pieces on this one.

The attention to detail on this 57 floored me. The engine is clean and not too flashy, showing that it means business. All hoses and lines are cleanly routed and look like GM designed the engine for this car.

2014 Gypsum Summer Car Show and Pie Festival Part 1

With about 3 weeks between them and the date, a local restaurant owner and one of his most loyal patrons set out to have a car show on Memorial Day weekend in the tiny town of Gypsum, KS. The eating establishment in question is the newly opened Exit 14, a play on a comical sign at the edge of the single paved street town proclaiming “Gypsum Next 13 Exits.” The patron in question is my uncle the internet infamous Poverty Flats, Paul Kruse.

With 3 weeks planning the show went off great. 75 cars showed up from as far away as Springfield, MO and Lincoln, NE. Good food was had at Exit 14, stories were told and pies were awarded, all in all a great success.

 Part 1 Part 2

The view looking north on Maple Street in Gypsum. The blue building on the right was my uncle and aunt’s hardware store up until last November, the Pepsi sign on the left is Exit 14.
Brian’s car is full of kool. He recently showed me pics of the chop going down at DeRosa’s shop at about the same time that Barry Weiss’ Cadillac was there, the Caddy can be seen in the background of some of the progress shots of this car.
All the way from Springfield, MO was our friend Dick Craig in his simple yet kool 54 Chevy.
A local car that’s been built in the shop it sits in front of in this pic.
Quite a crew from Osborne, KS there were more but these were the roadsters of the group.
I love this car. The owner is pretty awesome too.
Dick’s 5 window is pretty near perfect, and awfully damn yellow :).
Lizzie of Pinstriping by Lizzie brought her 62 Buick Special up from Tulsa, OK. She even made a pie to give out as her own award.

My friend Donny’s car. The world lost this amazing guy a decade ago but his father still shows his car from time to time. dB was one of the good ones, I miss you brother.

More to come tomorrow including the pie winners!

2014 Pratt Fire Department Car Show

Pratt, KS is about 2 hours southwest of my home in central KS. On Saturday May 24, 2014 we headed down to Pratt for a car show put on by the Pratt Fire Department. I don’t know why this show hasn’t taken off, Memorial Day weekend in this area doesn’t have much going on show wise unless you want to drive 5 or so hours to the NSRA Nationals in Springfield, MO. I’ll be heading back to this show again next year if at all possible. I’ll even bring my car… if it isn’t broken again…

Guest Post: Dan at Vintage Torque Fest

Guest Blog!
My buddy Dan Podobinski is a photographer based out of Indiana, he attends a lot of the same type of shows that I do.  Since I can’t be everywhere at once, Dan was nice enough to share some of his images from the 2014 Vintage Torque Fest with all of you through the blog here. Okay class now all together say “Thank You Dan!” You may have seen some of his work recently in Car Kulture Deluxe Magazine, or on the HAMB. You need to go follow his page on Facebook here and buy some prints of his great photographs!

When one thinks about hot beds of this lifestyle known as hot rodding, Dubuque, Iowa almost certainly does not come to mind.  However, this charming little city on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi has whole heartedly embraced Vintage Torque Fest and has truly made it a part of the city.  From the kickoff cruise night in historic downtown until the very last cars roll out of town and head for home, Dubuque has proven to be a great host.

The event, which benefits the Helping Hannah’s Heart foundation, attracted cars from all over the U.S.A. and even Canada!  Mother Nature was much more forgiving this year, serving up only a few random sprinkles on Friday and breaking out in full sunshine for Saturday, making for a jam packed scene.  The improved weather also allowed for plenty of action on the clay oval, with everything from vintage flat track motorcycles and sprints to everyday hot rods making hot laps to the delight of the throngs of spectators.  In between the action there was plenty to do and see.  Live music, a nice little swap meet, tons of great lifestyle vendors and last, but not least, the car show itself!

Mark your calendar for next year’s Vintage Torque Fest and do what you can to make it to Iowa and be a part of the action.  If you would like to learn more about the reason behind this event, visit www.HelpingHannahsHeart.com
