2014 GoodGuys Spring Lonestar Nationals Pt. 2

There’s not much to say about the show, people at the show vs. people I know at the show at the Goodguys events means that I spent more time shooting photos than I did talking with folks. That is usually not the case. At the smaller shows there are a lot more people that I know and I spend so much of my time enjoying great conversations with awesome people that I might miss out on some photos.  In the end I’m there to cover the show and the people are a big part of the show so that’s fine with me to miss a few photos in order to spend good times with good people.

Since I was on a shortened timetable anyways I took as many photos I could a short amount time ran back out to my car and got back on the road. I hope you enjoy Part 2 of the 2014 Goodguys Spring LoneStar Nationals from Texas Motor Speedway.

Name My Show!

CONTEST HAS ENDED, THANK YOU!

Some of you are in on it, and some are not. Well here, the cat is out of the bag, the plan is for a new podcast to join the Set To Stun Productions Network the first week of April. The host of that show will be me! That’s right, for those of you that would prefer to keep up on all that is going on in the Midwest Rod and Kustom scene in an audio fashion instead of print there will be a weekly podcast.  The plan for now is for me to do some monologue telling any stories that came up that week, as well as having guests on from different parts of the Midwest to talk about what’s going on at their shops, in their clubs, at their shows. The goal will be the same as it is here, to inspire you to come out and join us at the shows.

Mickey from Stray Kat Kustoms (Stray Kat 500 and Starliner promoter and genuine great guy) came up with what I thought was a great name for the podcast. “Redline” seeing as I’m always going at just about full tilt boogie to get to the next show to shoot more coverage and post it up here. However there are already a couple of podcasts out there with that name or a derivation of it. So with about 12 days to go, I’m on the search for a new name! I need to have a couple of days to come up with the logo as well so I’m putting you folks on to job of coming up with a name. You have until Midnight Thursday March 20th to turn in your entry. Just head on over to the Contact page, fill in your name, your email address and then give me your suggestion for the podcast name. One suggestion will be picked as the winner and will receive a prize package including a Hot Rod Stencil Shirt, 2 Royboy Productions Stickers, and the winner’s choice of a red or black Royboy embroidered flexfit hat OR an embroidered Royboy Winter Hat. More prizes may be added to the prize package during the week. Enter as often as you’d like, good luck!

2014 GoodGuys Spring Lonestar Nationals Pt. 1

After much fretting and flip flopping on what to do with a forecast of 90% chance of rain I went from my hotel in Ardmore, OK to Fort Worth, TX for the 2014 GoodGuys Spring Lonestar Nationals at the Texas Motor Speedway. I’m glad I did. Lots of kool cars, many of them out of my normal style but nicely done.

Artist Feature: Johnny Jalopy

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

As of the writing of this blog (12:30 am on Saturday) I will make the decision tomorrow morning to continue south into Texas for the Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals at Fort Worth’s Texas Motor Speedway which has a 90% chance of rain or turn around 2 hours and go back north to Guthrie, OK to Nostalgia Sid’s Open House which has a 70% chance of rain.  Either way I end up in the OKC area Saturday evening to try to get a photo shoot in if the weather permits. It’s now about 1am and I’m beat, heading to bed. Listen to Friction In The Static podcast that goes live on Monday to hear more about the contest.

See you at a show,

Royboy

If you’re a fan of this site and want to help royboyproductions.com stay alive there are a couple things you can do. Gas and hotels are expensive, you can buy prints, shirts, hats, etc. from Royboy Productions to help offset those expenses and get yourself something kool out of the deal. There is a store page here that will be getting a bunch of new items soon. You can send a couple of bucks through paypal to royboyproductions@yahoo.com as a donation, and you can share the posts that you like with your friends on social media sites. Below every post there is an area called “Share This” with links to most social media networks. Every time you share the posts it helps bring more people to the site and increases the chances of attracting more and more sponsors. The goal of this site always to encourage more people to join the kool kustom and hot rod family by showcasing the best car shows, creating videos and articles that preserve the stories of cars and builders and more. I know that in my heart I can do this full time and never run out of people to sit and interview and none of us will be around forever so I need to get to the point where I can do this full time to archive the stories and lives of as many people as possible. I can only do this with your help.

Artist Feature: Johnny Jalopy

Through listening to Friction In The Static Podcast I learned of an artist named Johnny Jalopy. After checking out his art a quick friend request on Facebook was sent. For about 3 years now I’ve enjoyed seeing everything from his doodles to his full on masterpieces. Johnny is my next victim for the Artist Feature, sit back and enjoy his art and learn a bit more about the man.

city run 001

1.) Do you remember an “ah-ha” moment that made you know that art was going to be an integral part of your life?

I have always had a desire to be creative and have always dreamed of doing art for a living. The moment that I knew I had to go for my dream is the day I lost my Dad. He was a great artist that never believed in his work and was too afraid of rejection to try to sell or show is work. But he always dreamed of selling it. So I made a promise that I was going to go for my dream and not let anything stop me.

my dream 001

2.) If you could pick 1 piece of your work that would represent the entire body of your work, which one would you choose?

I dont think I have one yet as I always see my art as a work in progress. I feel like I still have so much to work on and so much to learn. I am not sure if I will ever be satisfied with it. Sad right? Hahahaha But one of my pieces that has had received some great responses is my Zombie Squad Van. Very fun to do and I feel like I nailed the look of metal flake.

3.) Who or what most inspires your work?

My Dad Raymond H Wood, Big Daddy Roth, Ed Newton, George Trosley, Dave Bell, Dave Deal, Thom Taylor who are legends. And my art friends like Zombie, Nate Greco, Todd Jones, Ben Dragdaddy, Bernie Ramirez, Mark Ervin, Lemorris Harris, Kristina Magnuson Albrecht, Gary Campesi, Chuck Majewski, Scott Fisk, Mike Yapps, George Webber, Micky Hora, Max Grundy, Keith Weesner, David Lozeau so many other I feel bad I left them out!

4.) Is there an artistic style or process that you haven’t tried yet that you want to try?

Still working on pinstriping and would love to try sculpting and metal work.

5.) What’s 1 piece of advice you’d give an artist that’s just starting out today?

Work at your craft every moment you can. Dont give up and believe in yourself. Find your own style don’t pigeonhole yourself into on style, try them all.

Royboy Feature Video Episode 4: Larry James’ Cadillac

This kool Caddy first caught my eye a few  years ago at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, KS. Since then I’ve seen it repeatedly and even parked next to it in the Kustom City Display this year at the Starbird-Devlin Show in Wichita. I dig it. Every time I take a photo of the car, I dig it more. This car just works for me. So I called up it’s owner and builder Larry James of Flyin Eye Kreations in Wichita, KS and I ran down to his new shop location and we shot this video where he tells a bit of the history of the car. Enjoy!

1 Month Warning: Southwest Street Rod Nationals

Southwest Street Rod Nationals goes down in Oklahoma City, OK at the State Fair Park the weekend of April 11-13, 2014. You can go here for full info on the event weekend.

I’ve only been to this event 1 time, but I do plan on returning this year. Schedule conflicts or just plain monetary conflicts have kept me away since the one trip that I took in 2010, but this year I will make a return… and nobody there will really notice. The show is big, lots of space, lots of street rods, lots of vendors and last time I went not all that many people from my normal circles. One of the koolest parts of the event is when people start to split from the show on Saturday they cause a parade of sorts of most of the cars in the event, so gather up a lawn chair and enjoy the scenery as it rolls by.

Here are some photos from my previous visit to the show.

Shop Visit: Auto Artistry 3-8-14

For a few months I’ve been wanting to get out to Russell, KS to visit Auto Artistry. I first found out about this shop from Doug Reed who’s Toad (49 Oldsmobile Kustom) had been reworked at Auto Artistry. Finally last Saturday I got the chance to make the trip out to Russell.

From the Auto Artistry website: “Our business was started in 1989.We did custom and restoration work and were primarily a collision repair shop known as Auto Body Specialists. In 2003 we decided to go primarily street rod and custom, so the name was changed to reflect that.We do all chassis, custom fabricating, bodywork, and paint all in house.”

Auto Artistry has a range of projects in progress and on display finished.

That’s one kool remote control valve cover.
With a new grandkid freshly arrived, Auto Artistry’s boss Mike Schoech brought on a new project to start working on.
This beautiful ride was in the shop to be swapped from air ride back to static suspension. Here’s the project gallery on the car.
The 57 Ford Pickup project and the 66 Chevelle project.
This custom aluminum radiator setup was ready for duty in the 57 Ford pickup project.
See the progress pics so far on this 66 Chevelle here
New K Member and 6.1 Hemi are on the list for this Cuda project.

Watching this Chevy come together will be fun. Keep tabs on it here.
The shop truck is getting the full on treatment, expect to see 1 bad Mopar 4×4 in a couple of months! See the progress so far here.
This beautiful 37 Ford was originally in for a factory restoration, after awhile of driving it that way the customer decided they wanted a bit of an update.

Visit Auto Artistry on their website here
Or on Facebook here

2014 Texas Thaw Part 3

Overall the Texas Thaw was a blast. I did have 1 issue though. At some point during a day long event you might get a bit thirsty or hungry, which did happen to me. So I went over to try The Bomb food wagon’s food, uh damn, long line there. So I went over and got in the longer line for the track’s concession stand. I don’t know what made me choose that longer line but something in my head though since it was the track concession stand that they’d be ready for crowd and they’d get me through the line quickly. WRONG. I was talking with folks so I didn’t realize that it had taken 45 minutes to get up to the order window. Right… well okay I’ll get a cheeseburger, some fries and 2 bottles of water, it may take 15 minutes or so to get my food so a 2nd bottle of water might come in handy. I was 75 minutes short in that estimation. That’s right boys and girls. After paying $17 for a double cheese burger (fatboy upgraded at the window), some fries, and 2 bottles of water, it took over 2 hours start to finish to actually stand in line and then get the food. That’s with 6 people giving up on waiting in front of me before I even got to order. Northstar Dragway, YOU FAIL when it comes to the concession stand. There is no excuse for a wait like that. A.) make a separate line for the folks that only want drinks and serve them out of a big beer cooler. B.) load your grill with burgers when you have a line instead of dropping them when you get the ticket up next. I saw one guy who waited 30 minutes from ordering to get 2 corndogs and 2 nachos, that’s an order that should have been up in about 90 seconds.

Okay enough of that bitching. I had to say it out loud and I had to say it where it will show up in google searches.

2 Month Warning: Vintage Torque Fest

For the last few years the Vintage Torque Fest put on by the folks of Vintage Torque DVD‘s on the first weekend of May. I give promoter John Wells a lot of hell for changing the date of the show because it now means the show conflicts with the Stray Kat 500. Since I do not own a flux capacitor equipped Delorean (which wouldn’t fit the criteria of either show) I must choose. 9 hours each way or 3.5 hours each way… Sorry John.

But just because I can’t make it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t bust your butt to get there. Go here and find out all of the info. Here’s what I saw the first 2 years.

2014 Texas Thaw Part 2

The day turned out quite nice weather wise. I should have spent more time shooting when I got there but there were people to see, stories to tell and memories of a fallen friend to share. The sun came out and gave me a decent little sunburn, I wandered the pits seeing old friends, meeting new ones. I have to say I dig this event. The cars are cool, the people are cool and the money goes to the USO/Unite for Troops.

2 Month Warning: Stray Kat 500

One of my favorite car shows each year is the Stray Kat 500. Yes I have Stray Kat Kustoms plaques in my cars so yes I may be biased. The Stray Kat shows are really more like rod/kustom family reunions where everyone brings their rides. The show goes down May 2-4, 2014 in Dewey, OK for info on the show go here. Stray Kat Kustoms has been generous enough to donate $100 towards the $1000 that will be given away for the New Blood Awards that we are giving away during the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular weekend.

2014 Texas Thaw Part 1

March 1, 2014 marks the second time that I went down to Denton, TX to the Texas Thaw put on by the Torques Car Club. The 1/8th mile Northstar Dragway was again the host for the 7th time. The car show area was overflowing just as last year and the drag pits were as well. Lots of vintage steel on hand for show and go.

1 Month Warning: Lonestar Roundup!

Okay so I’ve shared a metric crap-ton (technical measurement) of photos of the Lonestar Roundup over the years here, on my Facebook, my Instagram, my Twitter, my Tumblr and any other social media site that I can log into. This year the show goes down on April 4-5 at the Travis County Fairgrounds on the Northeast side of Austin.

For the 2nd time I’ll be driving my Galaxie on the 1200 mile round trip to the show. The plan is to meet up with a big caravan of kool in Dallas on the Thursday morning and roll down together from there.

Here are some of what I saw last year.

2014 Chill Pt. 1

PART 1 | PART 2 | PART 3

It was an ambitious goal. 3 events in 2 states in 1 day. To be fair it was 3 events in 2 cities that were a state apart in 24 hours, enough with semantics, lets start with the photos.  The first stop of the trip was the Chill in Park City, KS. The show consists of 3 giant buildings, 1 that’s vendors, bikes and this year Semis, yes big rigs. The other 2 buildings were full of cars, trucks, drag vehicles etc.

We’ll start out with the bikes. There weren’t very many of the flavor that I enjoy, but those are mixed in to these photos.

Love Love Love Steve’s twin Triumph engine’d drag bike. Expect a feature on this bike later this spring.

Photo Memories of a Good Man and Good Friend

Today’s blog post was supposed to be a new video feature that I shot last weekend. Honestly after hearing the news about a good friend who passed I just don’t feel like fighting some software that needs updates so that I can do the final edits. I’ll push the video back and show it to you later. Today’s post needs to be about DaddyO. If any of you would like any of these photos without the watermark (it’s automatically applied by my site) let me know and I’ll send you a clean copy.

My first introduction to Jamie (DaddyO) was hearing Pushrod play at the Stray Kat 500. The rowdy loud rockabilly sound was fun, the silliness of all of the guys in the band made the performances epic.

Later that evening Pushrod played again, this time in the tiny conference room of the host hotel. I didn’t know anyone at the show yet really, but the guys laid on an intense and insane performance for a standing room only crowd. Over the years I caught up with the band in Austin on Lonestar Roundup weekends and became friends with the guys. Actually in Austin I became the chauffeur for the guys and their ladies when some of us had a drink or two. Again the performances were epic.

Somewhere in here was when Atlas Speed & Custom became official. T shirts and hats advertising the shop were being sold at the Lonestar Roundup and Daddy-O invited me to stop by some time. “It’s a cool old quanset hut building, looks awesome in pictures.” I was sold and planned to come down to Denison for the KKOA show in October and finally go to Atlas and check out the shop and some of the projects that Daddy-O was working on.

That Friday night I went to a local bar, Smitty’s I believe was the name. Pushrod was playing and I had a handful of friends in the audience, but other than that the entire packed bar were complete strangers. I hadn’t been feeling well earlier in the evening so the band was on stage and rocking when I showed up. The boys stopped in the middle of a song to welcome me to the bar like I owned the place. It was always a good time watching Pushrod perform.

The last 2 H.A.M.B. Drags weekends Pushrod performed. It was good to see the guys someplace north of the Red River.

Then in 2013 I made a trip down to Texas for the Texas Thaw, money was tight and Daddy-O knew it. He generously offered up a cot in his pad for me to save some bucks. Every time I was to be in the area, he always invited me to stop by the shop. Many other folks echo the same thing when they were coming through town. Daddy-O was always up for showing off what he’d been working on, and it was always stuff that’s cool.

Later in 2013 I was back in North Texas for Pistons N Paint. On Sunday before heading back to KS I met up with Jamie and we went for a ride in Atlas 1 and did a little photoshoot. I had a blast riding around getting the comedic version of the history of Denison, TX. Afterwards we were back at the shop for a bit, talking life, women, music, hot rods and kustoms. It was a great time and that’s where the first photo at the top of the page came from.

I miss you my friend, the world is a less kool place without you.

Royboy

3 Events, 2 States, 1 Day, I Must Be Crazy

This weekend should be fun one. There are 3 events going on this weekend that I felt I must be at. I’m taking vacation from the day job on Friday afternoon so that I can head out on trek to cover 3 events in 2 different states in 24 hours, oh and then there’s the bit of the extra state of Oklahoma that I have to drive through to get to the 3rd event. I must be crazy.

The plan is to load up all of my gear in the daily driver and head first to Park City, KS for the Park City Chill. You can find out more info on the show in my 1 Month Warning post on the show here. Usually the show takes a few hours to cover but then again I’m usually there on a Saturday, I’m hoping that the Friday afternoon timing will mean less spectators. At this point I know quite a few people at almost any show that I go to so I do get a bit slowed down talking to all of my friends. Not a bad thing except when time is tight. Maybe since it’s Friday more folks will be at work :).

After that I’ll head downtown into Wichita towards the Go Away Garage for the Artist At Large & Friends Art Show at 5pm. Amazing artists from around the country have turned in work to be on display for the show and locals that are attending have been encouraged to drive their cool rides to the event. Since I really don’t want to show specific pieces of art here, I will probably only take a couple of establishing photos inside of the crowd and general display. Outside I’ll do what I can to show you what shows up, but the weather is looking iffy so we’ll see what shows.

Once I’ve had my fun at the Go Away Garage, it’s back in the daily driver and southbound again. I’ll trek off into the night headed into Oklahoma, somewhere I will get tired and grab a hotel. Fully rested and ready to go again on Saturday I’ll finish the trip to the Northstar Dragway in Denton, TX. If you’ve driven south down I-35 into TX and seen a big salvage yard on the west side of the road, you just missed Northstar Dragway, it’s just between CTC Auto Ranch and the railroad tracks. The event is the Texas Thaw put on by the Dallas Chapter of the Torques Car Club. The Texas Thaw is a vintage drag race and car show event put on to raise money to send care packages to our men and women in the armed services over seas. A great event for a great cause. For more into on the show go to the official site here and be sure to check out my coverage of last year’s event here.

Earlier this year Big Ken of the Torques asked me if I was interested in doing one more special edition of my Calendar For Charity project featuring photos of the 2013 Texas Thaw. The Calendars are as of now in my possession from the printer and will be in the official booth of the show on Saturday for sale! If you are attending the show, there are only 75 copies in existence so if you want one, get over to the booth to get one as soon as you get to the show.

Finally after all of that is said and done, it’s a 6 hour jaunt back north to get home. Last year I got home around 10pm and joined some birthday celebrations for a friend at the bar. I think I’ll be headed straight to bed this time. Sunday I’ll get the photos all up on the site and set up to show off for the following 2 weeks. My day job is temporarily changing my job title and I will be largely unavailable for a couple of weeks. I hope to get the Hot Rod Stencil shirts in for shipping in the next week or so, as soon as I can I will have them in the mail for all of you that pre-ordered.

See you at a show,

Royboy

The view from the main level to the lower level was pretty good.
Murph (in the hat in the chair) brought this wild kustom pickup out to show off again.

It seems that Darryl emptied out most of the museum to show off at the show.
I’ve seen this car around for a few years and I dig it every time I see it.

Floyd’s 58 Edsel Roundup. Beautiful brand new mild kustom.
Daniel Dolan came down from Colorado to hang out for the weekend.
I looooove it. I need to get up to Colorado and shoot some video of this ride.
California to OK at 80 mph and 23 mpg. It was great to see Bill Hines and John at the show.

Doc’s T is always one of my favorite’s and definitely on my list for a future feature video.
It’s been fun watching this wild kustom come together!
