My 2nd trip to Dubuque, IA for the Retro Rewind went down over the weekend of Jan. 9, 2016. The 3rd annual Retro Rewind was a lot of fun, even if I decided last minute to not bring my ride. The bitter cold may have kept my car (I wimped out after being sick all week) and some spectators away but there were still a ton of great cars, trucks, bikes, vendors, bands and awesome car people at the show.

11 Days And Counting…

On April 3rd, 2014 a new voice forces itself onto the digital airwaves. A new on demand online radio show all about the Midwestern Rod/Kustom scene will go live on settostunproductions.com

Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes: The Royboy Radio Show will be a weekly show where I share my travels and adventures with you in an audio form. The plan is to take my audio recorder with me to events and capture the stories of the people I meet. What was their first cool car. What car do they wish they’d never sold, etc. The plan is to ask folks the same questions each time, with follow up questions depending on the answers that we get. If you have a question that you’d like to see added to the list, comment on this blog page below. I can’t guarantee that I use them all but I will consider all entries. I want Chrome Pipes & Pinstripes to be OUR show, not just mine. I want you to look forward to the next installment, to see who I talk to next, etc.

There will be a post here on royboyproductions.com with a streaming player, and full show notes including photos when appropriate. Or you can go to settostunproductions.com to stream the show. The best way to get it for us on this end is if you go to itunes (once it’s available) and subscribe. I will give you all a link ASAP.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the “Name My Podcast” contest. The winner is Matt Yost, I’ll be contacting you and mailing your prize package out to you SOON!

See you at a show,

Royboy

Name My Show!

CONTEST HAS ENDED, THANK YOU!

Some of you are in on it, and some are not. Well here, the cat is out of the bag, the plan is for a new podcast to join the Set To Stun Productions Network the first week of April. The host of that show will be me! That’s right, for those of you that would prefer to keep up on all that is going on in the Midwest Rod and Kustom scene in an audio fashion instead of print there will be a weekly podcast.  The plan for now is for me to do some monologue telling any stories that came up that week, as well as having guests on from different parts of the Midwest to talk about what’s going on at their shops, in their clubs, at their shows. The goal will be the same as it is here, to inspire you to come out and join us at the shows.

Mickey from Stray Kat Kustoms (Stray Kat 500 and Starliner promoter and genuine great guy) came up with what I thought was a great name for the podcast. “Redline” seeing as I’m always going at just about full tilt boogie to get to the next show to shoot more coverage and post it up here. However there are already a couple of podcasts out there with that name or a derivation of it. So with about 12 days to go, I’m on the search for a new name! I need to have a couple of days to come up with the logo as well so I’m putting you folks on to job of coming up with a name. You have until Midnight Thursday March 20th to turn in your entry. Just head on over to the Contact page, fill in your name, your email address and then give me your suggestion for the podcast name. One suggestion will be picked as the winner and will receive a prize package including a Hot Rod Stencil Shirt, 2 Royboy Productions Stickers, and the winner’s choice of a red or black Royboy embroidered flexfit hat OR an embroidered Royboy Winter Hat. More prizes may be added to the prize package during the week. Enter as often as you’d like, good luck!

CONTEST HAS ENDED, THANK YOU!

As of the writing of this blog (12:30 am on Saturday) I will make the decision tomorrow morning to continue south into Texas for the Goodguys Spring Lonestar Nationals at Fort Worth’s Texas Motor Speedway which has a 90% chance of rain or turn around 2 hours and go back north to Guthrie, OK to Nostalgia Sid’s Open House which has a 70% chance of rain.  Either way I end up in the OKC area Saturday evening to try to get a photo shoot in if the weather permits. It’s now about 1am and I’m beat, heading to bed. Listen to Friction In The Static podcast that goes live on Monday to hear more about the contest.

If you’re a fan of this site and want to help royboyproductions.com stay alive there are a couple things you can do. Gas and hotels are expensive, you can buy prints, shirts, hats, etc. from Royboy Productions to help offset those expenses and get yourself something kool out of the deal. There is a store page here that will be getting a bunch of new items soon. You can send a couple of bucks through paypal to royboyproductions@yahoo.com as a donation, and you can share the posts that you like with your friends on social media sites. Below every post there is an area called “Share This” with links to most social media networks. Every time you share the posts it helps bring more people to the site and increases the chances of attracting more and more sponsors. The goal of this site always to encourage more people to join the kool kustom and hot rod family by showcasing the best car shows, creating videos and articles that preserve the stories of cars and builders and more. I know that in my heart I can do this full time and never run out of people to sit and interview and none of us will be around forever so I need to get to the point where I can do this full time to archive the stories and lives of as many people as possible. I can only do this with your help.

$1000 up for grabs for the New Blood Award!

I’ve noticed over the last few years that at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular the general crowd tends to be older than I am. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, there’s a mountain of know-how in the legends of kustomizing that show up at the KKOA. However, if I look around at the Lonestar Roundup, Iron Invasion, Viva Las Vegas, or many other shows I see a younger crowd shows up. That’s awesome! We need new blood coming to all of these shows to keep them surviving year after year. So how do I encourage some of those folks to drive out to Salina for the KKOA like they drive to all of these other great shows?

Last year I had the idea that I wanted to give an award to someone under 40 that was showing a car at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. I thought it would be a way to help promote the show to a younger audience. I called up a bunch of friends and they all donated prizes or big discounts on their services to a prize package that went along with the award. Great half ass idea. The award is only part of it, in order for it really to mean something I needed to promote the whole deal. It needs to be a bigger, crazier idea. It needs to be a reason for someone to drive a few hundred miles.

That’s where this year’s plan comes into being… So how do I encourage someone to attend the show when they may be on the fence about making the trip? Cash! No, not Johnny, cold hard cash. $500 to the winner should help encourage folks. In talking with some show promoter friends they encouraged me to do 2 prizes. 1 that I pick, and 1 that you, the fans, pick. $500 each, $1000 total giveaway. The 2 cash prizes will be given away at a party at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS here is the party info.

Here’s the plan!
I will get 10 award sponsors to donate $100 each to the prize pot, I actually already have 5 lined up including my $100 with another 1 maybe at this time. In return for their donation what do they get? From now until the last weekend of July they get advertisement both on my blog and on my social media sites. Really a good deal for 100 bones. I’ll be promoting the awards here on the blog and on the H.A.M.B. and I’ll be talking about the event and the sponsors a lot in the coming months.

So who is eligible for this award?
Okay here’s the scoop. I want this award to help encourage new cars and car owners to come to the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular. So the eligible vehicles have to be new to the KKOA Leadslead Spectacular, never shown at one before in it’s current condition. I want to encourage younger owners to attend so the owner must be under 35 years of age. The Leadsled Spectacular is not the Muscle Car Spectacular, it’s not the Street Rod Spectacular, it’s not the C10 Chevy pickup Spectacular. This show is supposed to be about kustoms and old school hot rods, notice I did not say rat rods. Nope, this award will only go to cars that have the basic look and feel that you’d find in the little pages type magazines of 1963 and older. So with the exception of something like a 65 Riviera which is widely considered to be a factory kustom the the car generally needs to be a 63 or older body style done in a style that approximates what it could have been done like in 1963 or before.

What’s that mean?
No weird crap for the sake of shock value ratty cars. No muscle cars. No street rods with digital dashes. No Billet Wheels. No Independent front suspension on fenderless cars. Get the idea?

How do you enter?
Basically to enter you need to send in some information, on this page. Those that meet my criteria will be entered in the contest. Registration for the contest starts March 1, 2014 and ends June 14th, 2014.

How do you win?
Like I said, there will be 2 prizes given out. The first one will be selected by the fans on royboyproductions.com All of the entered cars will be featured on one page and fans will be able to vote on that page of the site. Simply put, the most votes between June 15, 2014 and July 14, 2014 will win. More on this to come later. The second way to win is by MY choice. Royboy’s contest, Royboy’s choice on the winner. I’ll pick the car that I think deserves the cash prize and then I’ll look the car over at the show to pick a final winner.

Is this an official part of the KKOA?
Nope. I just like that they throw a pretty good show in my hometown and I want to support the show and get new blood involved in the show.

Does the car have to show up at the show to win?
Yes. You must show up and be a registered entrant of the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in order to win. The internet voting will be recorded so that if the first place winner is a no show, the 2nd place winner can take home the prize.

Where’s all of the legal mumbo jumbo?
I hope that we can all act like adults and treat this as what it’s meant to be, a fun way to attract a younger crowd to join the legendary builders that attend the KKOA show in Salina. If you need a lawyer for this deal, you’ve missed the damn point of it all. That being said, the rules are subject to change as I see fit to try to keep it fair and fun for everyone involved.

Trucks 2014

1 Month Warning: Mid Decembrrrr Run!

This is the 4th time I’ve put together the Mid Decembrrrr Run and the 4th variation on the theme. The first run was about 130 miles with stops to tour the McPherson College Auto Restoration program, the very impressive Kansas Motorcycle Museum and a stop at my friend Calvin’s Customs shop in Salina, KS before heading to the Stiefel Theatre to watch that year’s KKOA Leadsled Spectacular DVD from Vintage Torque. Year 2 we did about 150 miles and took the group on a great drive through some scenic country that most had never seen before, and we stopped at the Kansas Auto Racing Museum in Chapman, KS before hitting Calvin’s shop. Year 3 was a long long drive, we left from Calvin’s and headed west on old highway 40 all of the way out to Big Creek Restoration in Ellis, KS where we were treated to some BBQ and a shop tour before turning around and rolling back to Salina. All of these included stops at the Paramount Bar in Salina for drinks and usually some food that we put together to feed the weary travelers.

So the 4th year I’m taking you on a new adventure and adding the movie experience back in. We’ll leave my small home town of Gypsum, KS shortly after 10am, heading east on K4 Highway and then ducking off onto some paved roads that connect some of the smaller towns of the area. The road part of the trip is shorter than past years at about 65 miles but the stop in the middle is a good one! President Dwight D. Eisenhower grew up in Abilene, KS and that’s where his Presidential Library is. We will stop for lunch in Abilene and head to the museum, for about a 2.5 hour stop. This will provide some great indoor time to not only see some great historical pieces but to hang out with folks also on the Run. Please note that the admission to the museum is $10 a head for anyone 6 years old and older, we may get a slight discount as a group but plan for $10 just in case. From there we will head out of Abilene and catch old 40 again and head for Salina. A quick stop to see what Calvin’s Customs is up to then on to the Paramount for some food, drinks and a special screening of the new Atomic Hot Rods Film “This is Long Beach.” We may show the new KKOA DVD while we’re eating as well, I’ve not decided and asked for permission on that part yet. The movie does cost me money to screen, so some donations to that cause would be awesome. In the past couple of years I’ve made arrangements for some food to be served, I’m not sure what I’m doing to that end this year. We may have some snacks at the Paramount and just all go to a brand new Pizzeria after the screening. As we closer to the day we’ll get that figured out. PLEASE NOTE: If you are waiting until that day to get your 2014 Calendar for Charity, DON’T! They are going fast and only 39 remain of the 250 that were produced!

So come along with us and enjoy the ride, drive your cool classic hot rod, kustom, cruiser or whatever if you’d like, drive your daily driver if you must, just join the rod/kustom family on yet another adventure that we call the Mid Decembrrrr Run.

The beautiful blue Kansas sky and the big trees of Forest Park combined to make lots and lots of harsh shadows. If I had more time at the show I would have used an off camera flash to fill in a bit, but I had 3 hours to cover a park with about 2000 cars in it… So yeah I didn’t do that 🙂

The 2nd stop on the Garage Krawl for our group was my friend Roger’s house. Due to it being a private property I will not mention his last name or where it is. Roger has a fantastic collection of Fords mostly 40’s of various types and a couple of Falcons and more, but his automobilia collection is equally as impressive.
