I wasn’t able to take my ride this year but there was no way that I was missing the Stray Kat 500. The show goes down the first full weekend each May in Dewey, OK, and it’s become one of my can’t miss events. You’ll see everything from patina hot rods to Ridler winners at this show (this year was the first time a Ridler winner showed up 🙂  ) and it’s all about a laid back good time with great people who own cool cars.
If you’re tired of going and sitting at a car show, try a Rumble! Challenge another group of car buddies from another city to meet you at a town halfway in between, whichever city brings the most rides wins!

For those that don’t know the story, in 2020 at the Flaming Gorge Resort Independence Day car show, Mayor Woody told us of a great idea. What if we got a 3 day weekend in the winter, when there’s snow on the ground and bring a bunch of hot rods out to have some fun?

I wasn’t sure this one was gonna happen for me. The forecast for the two weeks above the show was gloomy. It just wouldn’t clear up! Then on the Thursday before the show an ice storm covered most of Oklahoma and North Texas while it dumped snow on me in Kansas. It was not looking good for leaving Thursday after work so that I could get to the Reliability Run on Friday.
I can’t count the number of years that I’ve been attending the Starbird Rod & Custom Show in Tulsa, OK. I go back year after year to see all of the friends that I have in the Tulsa area and beyond that all come to this show.
There was a great turnout this year for the Hobo Happenings in Douglass, KS! Over 200 cars gathered on the last Saturday before Thanksgiving for a good time on a beautiful November day. See the video below for Royboy’s Coverage.
Last weekend I picked up a buddy and we made a quick 700 mile round trip to Denton, TX for the 2021 Pistons & Paint Car Show. Enjoy the video below.
The 2nd annual Gathering At The Roc is in the books! Just as last year I had to work so I couldn’t make it down for the Friday Reliability Run, so after work on Friday we rushed to Bartlesville, OK so we could be close for the fun on Saturday October 9th. The 5th Annual Hot Rod Rock & Rumble filled the Pikes Peak International Raceway August 27-29th. This year I had to cruise the 450 miles out in the daily driver, but with my new house being pretty close to US 50 and the racetrack being about 20 miles off of US 50, I figured why not cruise the highway all the way out instead of spending the day on the boring interstate.
With last year’s shutdowns and canceled shows it was great to get to hang out at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular again this year! My former home in Gypsum, KS is only about 25 minutes from Oakdale Park in Salina, KS where the show has been held on the last full Sunday of July for the last few years.
It had been far too long since we’d all been in Dewey, OK for the 20th Try at the Stray Kat 500. The Stray Kat Kustoms crew really put on a great show as always with tons of great cars, and most of my favorite people from the regions. Friends from my Lonely Knights club in Colorado were on hand, as well as a bunch of folks from TX, AR, KS, MO, OK and a couple other states.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions the 57th Annual Darryl Starbird National Rod and Custom Car Show was held over the weekend of April 30-May 2. The location was the same but it was nice to be able to go to the show and not have it be snowing that weekend! Â See more photos below.
For a few years I’ve heard my friend Jason Smith from Hot Rod Garage in Sand Springs, OK talk about a dream show that he would like to put on. Our mutual friend Brandon McCullough joined in the conversation at some point and a couple of years went by. I’d all but forgotten about their idea when one of them texted me and told me that the show was happening and to keep an eye out for the details.
Finally a date was set, a location was set, it was to be Halloween, 2020 at Woolaroc outside of Bartlesville, OK. The name “The Gathering At the Roc” was coined and they set up an Instagram account and started sharing some photos of cars that were coming to the show. You see, you must submit photos of your car to get accepted to be a part of the show. Some try to get as many cars to their shows as possible, but that’s not the plan for the Gathering. The Gathering is about a hand curated group of amazing cars and their owners.
We all know that 2020 has been a rough year for many reasons. So when the CrossMembers CC asked me if I’d like to come back to OK on Oct. 3rd to cover their OKC Hot Rod Hundred again, I was ready to take a weekend away from the normal duties of life to go play hotrods with some friends.
I rolled out of Wichita at 6am on Saturday and rolled into the starting point of the HRH around 8am, the cars were already filing the parking lot. About 150 had pre-registered and I believe another 70 or so did so that morning.
For the 2nd year in a row I made the nearly 800 mile journey from my home in central Kansas to Dutch John, Utah, more specifically to Flaming Gorge Resort for the 15th Annual Car Show. We showed up on Wednesday this year instead of Thursday, another day in the remote mountain resort meant more time with friends and car family, more time to relax and recharge, and more time to enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds Flaming Gorge Resort .

At that time I was really looking forward to returning to the show, I had no idea how much fun I was going to have.
Thursday the 27th I left my day job at Affordable Street Rods in Peabody, KS and headed south. After a 30 minute delay on the interstate a little after 11pm I finally got to my hotel in Alvarado, TX around 1 am.

Monkey is a hell of a character, whether it’s driving a blown t bucket in the rain or jumping unnaturally high as the flag man for the DuckusCrapus drags, we have a great time every time we hang out. This time we were riding around in his 1940 Ford Pickup truck and he told me the story of the truck and some interesting adventures he’s had in it along the way.

Each year before I go out to California for the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show I wonder to myself, is it really worth the expense and the time off of work to travel all the way out to CA again? Each year on the way home from the trip I remember that it certainly was worth it.
Since 2010 a small and ever changing group of hot rod and custom folks have been gathering in Gypsum, KS to challenge the weather, to get one more drive in, to chase each other through central Kansas one more time before winter hits. We call it the Decembrrrr Run and this year it was a lot of fun, like always!
This September while attending the 2019 Hot Rod Hill Climb, I was told by Troy Hastings to keep the weekend of November 16th open for an event in Denver. That’s because Hastings is the President of the Denver Timing Association which was founded in 1949, making this the 70th Anniversary of the DTA, and this weekend was when the DTA had scheduled the Burnin’ Rubber Through History event. A retrospective of hot rodding featuring cars as old as 1918 and various cars from Colorado’s hot rodding history.

I seem to have a knack for missing the first time a cool event happens. This time I’d missed two instances of the Hot Rod Rock And Rumble held at Pikes Peak International Raceway, although I had a great reason to miss the first one as I was in the middle of the 48 Cars 48 States trip. Last year… Yeah I didn’t have much of an excuse.
In 2013 Mike Nicholas and some die hard friends brought back the Hot Rod Hill Climb as a tribute to the event that happened in 1953 and 1954 in Georgetown, CO. After a couple of years at that location, the venue changed to Central City, CO where the 2019 Hot Rod Hill Climb happened this year on Sept. 13-14.

September 7th, 2019 saw kustoms rolling in to tiny Dewey, OK for the 2nd annual Lead Ain’t Dead show. The Stray Kat Kustoms show is set up for kustoms and customs and features special parking for non-custom cool cars as well.
